Limewire

Hey - quick one, Limewire icon bounces when I open it then disappears and nothing happens. I think I've seen this before but can't remember what I did. I already tried deleting it and downloading again but the same thing still happens  , can anyone help?

Raven 01-24-2006 11:32 AM

Does it happen in other user accounts ?
Also, did you try to delete the preferences for LimeWire (in ~/Library/Preferences) ?
And since the issue may vary depending on which version of OS X you are using, please indicate which one you are using with LimeWire.

Why do you use Limewire anyway? Frostwire is better and doesn't nag you

I just downloaded Frostwire and got the same problem as dragonfly did with Limewire: double-click on it and just bounces but does not start up
G5 2.7 MHz OS 10.4.4

Raven 01-24-2006 02:52 PM

If you take a look at the Console to see if you have crash logs for those apps ?

Mike Adams 01-24-2006 03:00 PM

Console error message

an 24 14:15:06 Mike-Adams-2 /Applications/FrostWire/FrostWire.app/Contents/MacOS/FrostWire: launch failed with error code -2857 (cfragCFragRsrcErr) for application /Applications/FrostWire/FrostWire.app/Contents/MacOS/FrostWire\n

Raven 01-24-2006 03:23 PM

Can you post the complete crash log ? This line seems to come from the System log and doesn't indicate much.
Also, I suggest you try to uninstall manually all of the following: remove the file /Library/Receipts/Install LimeWire.pkg, and the folders ~/Library/Preferences/LimeWire, /Applications/LimeWire, ~/Shared and /Incomplete
By the way... the rror you are getting may have its origin with Java as LimeWire is a Java app... Did you make any settings change to your Java Settings lately ?

Mike Adams 01-24-2006 03:31 PM

I am just not willing to do all that for a program. If it is not ready to run error-free, I will go elsewhere

Raven 01-24-2006 03:50 PM

Then I would recommend you get Acquisition. Many people consider it the best p2p for Mac.

tlarkin 01-24-2006 04:41 PM

I just use bit torrent personally.

dragonfry 01-26-2006 06:46 PM

Limewire still doesn't work but i downloaded Frostwire and that is tip-top so thankyou! I did use bittorrent for a while but struggled to find decent websites for getting the torrent files from, anyone know any?

Las_Vegas 01-26-2006 07:27 PM

Limewire is Java. Any problem with your Java system will cause Limewire to crash. Try Poisoned. It's free, native code and supports four protocols rather than Limewire's one.

CAlvarez 01-26-2006 08:56 PM

Limewire has always been full of glaring bugs. If you're using it "obtain" files, you might want to try something like an Easynews.com account which is fast, easy, and web-based.

I get this same problem, I think it has something to do when I did a system update for the OS...right now I have 10.3.9

How come Frostwire is exactly the same as Limewire? Aren't they from differing software houses.

cccollar 04-05-2006 05:20 PM

Do like Raven said use Aquisition. It rarely crashes, and is fast. Poisoned works great, sometimes and other times it crashes or just boggs down the system.

zzzuppp 04-05-2006 07:38 PM

I find Acquisition to be almost useless (and it costs).Whatever I search for,it only finds 2 or 3 results (as opposed to Limewire, and even better,my personal favourite,Cabos, which finds approximately ten times as many results).

cccollar 04-05-2006 09:14 PM

Really? I have good results with one program for a while, and then eventually have to switch to another. something gets goofyfied with all of them, Aqusition just works right now. I like the torrent idea, but those site always seem to slow down my web browser to a crawl after an hour or so of searching and downloading. so then I switch. Is this something to do with the sites and or programs, or the nature of p2p file sharing, or my ISP?

ThreeDee 04-05-2006 09:19 PM

phunguss 04-06-2006 06:46 AM

forget that gnutella crap

Most of those P2P are using variants of Gnutella. They suck. Get eDonkey2000, been using it for 5 years with no probs.

CAlvarez 04-06-2006 11:03 AM

Forget all P2P, it all sucks. Get a usenet account with easynews.com and get full-speed, reliable downloads.
