Any recommendations for website software?

I've always used Microsofts FrontPage for building my websites with when I was using XP, but now I need something for the Mac.

What's the most popular software that's used which is nice and simple to use. Preferably wysiwyg - I just want to be able to do personal stuff, web photo galleries, etc.

Does any web software come with iLife or iWork?
Thanks.

mccu7pj2 01-19-2006 11:24 AM

Yes, Apple have just added something to the iLife suite. In version '06 there is an application called iWeb - check out http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb/

Damn, that really sucks. I just bought my iMac in December and I'm not eligible for the upgrade. No special upgrage price either for previous users. Bleh!

lostduck 01-21-2006 07:36 AM

True, but what would be upgrade price be? For $79 you get a bunch of really good applications which have been substantially improved, plus an entire new one (Iweb). I consider it a very good deal, overall.

Sandvox suppose to be OK , DL but haven't tried yet...Free Beta

Well I went in the Apple store today to see about buying iWeb (iLife 06) and they told me that it has to sync with .mac and couldn't be used with my own personal domain.

That can't be true, can it? They wouldn't make software that's only compatible with .mac?

fil_dawg 01-21-2006 09:19 PM

Not true!

You're correct - what they told you in the Apple store is not right - check out this from Apple: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...n/bld1046.html

Though iWeb is powerful for it's realitve ease, it's too simple for most people experienced with HTML.

WYSIWYG editor: Dreamweaver
Text Editor: Barebone's BBEdit (free 45 days demo) or TextWrangler (free).

I'm not a big iWeb fan either. It will work but you may not be happy with the way it works or the pages it creates. There are several other choices on the Mac. Dreamweaver and GoLive are the big complicated apps. There is a scaled down version of Dreamweaver called Contribute. There are two or three mozilla based apps, Mozilla, SeaMonkey, and Nvu. At a more basic level you have Rapidweaver and a few others.

What about after you have created the webpage with some of these new softwares using your own domain name and need to upload it?

I too used MS Frontpage and have also used an FTP free program (WS_FTP95) to upload to the web. All was running nice and smooth.

Now I have to figure out a whole new system; move over the webpages already upthere the mac. etc.

So, any possible good uploading software out there as well?

Macromedia's Dreamweaver has a built in FTP client.

For a standalone FTP cleint I also had Transmit
. I liked the clean interface.

ShatteredGlass 01-22-2006 06:25 PM

I've been using CyberDuck for ftping stuff up to my domain. It's free and it works as good I need it. (the price was definitely right :) ).

CAlvarez 01-23-2006 12:13 AM

iWeb sucks unless you want to do very basic things (which are essentiall built into .Mac anyway). Compared to the power and ease of use of FrontPage, iWeb isn't even close.

ShatteredGlass 01-23-2006 09:45 AM

So besides iWeb, are there any other suggestions for a reasonably priced web /html editing software?

solipsism 01-23-2006 10:07 AM

Yes, they've been mentioned here already.

I guess reasonably priced means different things to different people, Dreamweaver for $400 or BB for $200 is still more than I wanted to pay. I was hoping for something in the $100 range.

Mikey-San 01-23-2006 10:23 AM

FTP? Hail to the king, baby.

CAlvarez 01-23-2006 10:25 AM

I use Textedit. It's free.

There are a number of tools out there, Freeway is the one I hear mentioned most often. I haven't tried it yet. I tried Macromedia Contribute and found it awkward; could be just me.

There's always TextWrangler. It used to be called "BBEdit Lite". It's free.

Thanks for that link. That looks just like the ticket. Not too complicated and a good for people who've been used to using MS FrontPage.

I've downloaded it, and it seems to be just what I was looking for. The price is more than perfect too. :)
