Job's Keynote

I don' t know how many of you people are doing this...but if you go to http://www.macrumorslive.com/web/ , you can know whats going on at the keynote today. A new laptop and imac so far! I was told that there is some guy from the website there and he is like texting the website or something.

rj89 01-10-2006 01:44 PM

or here that's where ive been reading http://www.macdailynews.com/macworld...6_keynote.html

Screengem0531 01-10-2006 01:46 PM

I'm excited and kinda upset too. I just bought my powerbook and they came out with a new laptop. I'm thinking of selling it and forking over a little extra cash to get the new one

rj89 01-10-2006 01:51 PM

yeah id be kinda upset too the macbook pro they said is 4 to 5 times faster than the powerbook. i can say im not liking the name "macbook pro" but it'll probably grow on me. right now im just geeking out about the new stuff...im such a nerd.

Screengem0531 01-10-2006 01:53 PM

I have the 15in right before the new displays (that made me upset too)...How much do you think I can get for my Powerbook? I have 1.5 gb of ram and an 80gb hd.

rj89 01-10-2006 02:04 PM

you probably paid in the 1600 range right for the PB+ram? id assume you could 1000-1700 range on ebay. that would be my guess. i checked on ebay for 15in PB's and this what got. http://search.ebay.com//search/searc...e=powerbook+15 But after shipping costs(if you take the shipping costs) and ebay costs well its gonna go down.Plus if you've never sold anything on there some people are hesitant on buying from someone who hasn't sold anything/or not much.

I know the feeling all too well. I had to get my PowerBook when I got it, but the timing really stinks.

I don't think I'd want one of the first MacBook Pros to come out, but I can see myself trading up real, real soon.

If they were just a little better, it wouldn't matter so much. But 4 to 5 TIMES FASTER? Geeeeez!

Screengem0531 01-10-2006 02:08 PM

The computer was $1999 + Ram. I paid probably around $2300.

If it's any consolation, no FW800 on the new MacBook.

wow yeah im kinda lost on the prices of everything i guess i always look at refurbs and used macs. i always look on www.lowendmac.com for stuff. anyways yeah i saw one similar like yours at 1500 so i'd assume around that range.

Screengem0531 01-10-2006 02:26 PM

$500 bucks cheaper in a few months. Wow!

There is no FW?! How are you supposed to import video from you FW camera?

rj89 01-10-2006 02:32 PM

there is firewire just it's firewire 400 not the 800 here's the specs and everthing else about it.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...clm=MacBookPro

Raven 01-10-2006 02:34 PM

There is only FW 400 no more 800. And I think there is only one FW 400 6 pin port now.

styrafome 01-10-2006 02:37 PM

There was only one FW400 6-pin port before, too.

Screengem0531 01-10-2006 02:40 PM

Will I have to get all new software? Like Final cut and photoshop?

mclbruce 01-10-2006 02:43 PM

Nice job Apple. I like what I have seen so far of the new announcements.

Those of you who are upset about buying a Powerbook just before the new ones are out, you may be getting ahead of yourself. The new Powerbooks have not shipped yet. Today it says February on the web site but it could easily say March by the end of the week. I'd say use what you've got until the new ones are shipping in quantity and easy to get. It could be a longer time than you think!

I'm looking forward to seeing the new Macs tomorrow when I go to MacWorld. I use iPhoto a lot as do my clients. I hope the new iPhoto is faster, even on slow machines. I'm looking forward to testing that out. I'm curious about iWeb as well.

• Office demo, Photoshop demo on Intel-based Mac OS X 10.4.4 via Rosetta. Photoshop performance not too bad. Pros will want the Intel native Photoshop version when available. Okay for occasional users.

Raven 01-10-2006 02:45 PM

Realy ? I have a 15 inch PB that says otherwise... Its a 1.5 ghz PBG4 thats about a year old. It has one 6 pin and one 4 pin... I think one of them is FW 800 too.

As others posted while I was too, my post refers to styrafome's post.

Even more so, I personally prefer to avoid any first generation of anything, especially something as important as a new processor chip. Let them work out the bugs with the first batch. Then I'll grab the second generation.

That is... IF I can control myself.

4 to 5 times faster. <--- for some reason, that just keeps echoing in my brain! I want it! I want it! :D

When will the Keynote be avalible on apple.com?

And with the buit-in iSight, you'll be able to look at yourself smile when you start it up the first time and take a snap shot so you'll have a picture of what u looked like as a little kid opening a gift ;)

Okay, new echo:

4 to 5 times faster with built-in iSight!

Let's see... I do have a birthday coming up in February! And an anniversary in March! And then there's Mother's Day! :D

Well they did say that this year they would only publish it later on... And many poeple are pissed off like you are. Still wondering why they realy decided to change that.

Does anyone know how to interpret the battery life in the Tech Specs for the MacBook Pro?

Maybe they're in a hurry to get the news out!

This is a really big day for Apple.

Edited to say:

Either I'm losing it or a message was just deleted! My quote was gone and the message I was quoting was gone, too!

Can someone just delete this message since the one I was replying to was either moved or deleted? Thanks! :)

I have to admit that it would be nice if Apple would make the built in iSight a BTO option. Problem is that it will not be allowed on some DOD installations, and i suppose compnies that ban built in camera things like phones. I hope they rethink this and make it BTO, otherwise no new macBook for me...*sigh*

Screengem0531 01-10-2006 04:13 PM

it is already but you can get it here: http://stream.qtv.apple.com/events/j...06_650_ref.mov

Raven 01-10-2006 04:25 PM

Or they may offer a way to completely disable it... sucha s by removing the kext files for it then reboot and make sure users don't have their install cds :D

Fantastic! Perfect timing!!

.
This is fantastic and more than I dared hoped for! Haven’t checked the details – but both a new iMac and a PowerBook. The advertised speed of these Intel-embracing Macs sounds like a great leap forward. The slogan and advertising punch are ingenious! (I’ll forgive the clumsy new name for the laptop.)

I love the timing! :)
Really glad that we held back investments in 2005. (I’ll make it up to my girlfriend by purchasing one for her first.) Now, for $ 2500 I can get a fully loaded 20" iMac. Front Row, iLife06 and built-in BlueTooth in the bargain. Upgraded with 2 gig RAM, 0.5 Tb harddisk, wireless keyboard and mouse for a modest price. The complete package for far less than I paid for my PowerBook in 2003. I’m sold!! :D

I do notice that Apple hasn’t had time to upgrade their Aperture specifications, but I would be astonished if this new Mac isn’t powerful enough to drive the software.

I’m pleased as (Apple) pie!

:) :) :)

MBHockey 01-10-2006 05:33 PM

Check this out:

http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/oneverymac.html

on the bottom, does it make sense where it says "anti productivity"?

It caught me a little by surprise...but maybe it does make sense and i'm just reading it wrong.

I think they are trying to stress how "fun" it is to use iLife, but anti-productivity just sounds bad

pantherman13 01-10-2006 06:35 PM

MacBook Pro....

so they will either keep the name iBook, or name it MacBook?

I wonder what Apple will do for their birthday. Something special, no doubt.

pantherman13 01-10-2006 07:44 PM

I'm glad I didn't buy Office for Mac a few weeks ago. Instead, I will get iWork '06. The only programs I would use in Office are Word and PowerPoint, and I like Keynote much more than PowerPoint.

While I was watching the keynote, I got kinda wrapped up in the RDF, but towards the end, I thought to myself "D'oh! No Leopard preview!"

Now I have something in June to really look forward to!

Good luck for all three of those days! I imagine the '4 to 5 times faster' is true in some sense, but I don't see how it can be really true (whatever that means). Here is a link from the Daring Fireball linked list.

vickishome 01-10-2006 09:36 PM

Interesting reading, Oops! I'm sure we will hear a lot more regarding the performance promises in the new MacBook Pros. This is one reason why I generally shy away from any first generation of a new product.

vickishome 01-10-2006 09:39 PM

Does anyone know how I can download that keynote address onto my hard drive? I've been interrupted 3 times so far, and then this last time I got as far as when Jobs was going to talk about the MacBooks when the stream suddenly went dead. Every time it's interrupted, I have to start from the very beginning again. It's hard enough to sit in one place for that length of time, but to have to start over from the beginning again?

If I could download the .mov file itself, then I could start/stop whenever and wherever I want.

Screengem0531 01-10-2006 10:51 PM

I was wondering the same thing. I have qt pro but it doesn't let you save it.

vickishome 01-10-2006 11:27 PM

It's working fine now. I can open it in Safari and Quicktime and even advance it to where I had left off, and it's working as it should now. Maybe there was just too much traffic earlier?

Nah - I don't think anybody much pays attention to these keynotes at all.

The stalling/stopping thing seems to be happening to most people, but you don't have to restart each time. My method is to just pause it as soon as it stalls; then it "Waits for Media" for about 8 seconds, usually buffers for a couple more, then resumes in the same place. If it times out, just hit the Play/Pause again and it will reconnect, and start playing, but you should still be in the same place. Also, you can slide the playhead to any spot, and it will start from there, it just might take a while.

But yeah, I understand what you mean, the stream is slow and cumbersome to most people, espeiclally with everybody trying to connect.

And one more thing... (no pun intended :D ): Last year, the website http://www.differentdistrict.com posted an actual QT movie (not a stream) of the entire MacWorld Keynote available to registered users of their site I believe. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they're doing it this year. (They're not the most well-known of all the Mac-based sites out there...)

lyndonl 01-11-2006 03:21 AM

Hey all i have to say about it is this.....

What no 17" MacBook Pro ?
and whats the deal with the Intel Core Duo? i see nothing about it being a 64 Bit? Sadly I feel we are going backwards??? I hope not. ok I can live without a Firewire 800, but isnt Leopard supposed to be all about being 64 Bit.

ldrury 01-11-2006 05:26 AM

I just hope a 12" MacBook Pro is on the way..... Will be a nice step up from my 12" iBook..... Hopefully just in time, won't be home until April anyway..... fingers crossed.....

I am dubious about the 4-5 times faster claim too.... Is this clock speed?? Or can I now open Dashboard 4 times as fast???? Apple have been known to make slightly dodgy claims in the past.... At least I have learnt one thing, never buy anything new from Apple before a keynote!!!

Jay Carr 01-11-2006 11:47 AM

One the last pages there was a link to an article that explained this really well. But this is the basics.

They tested the processors to see how well they process both integers and floating point integers. These are the basic units that all programs use in order to function. Their different in many ways, but the way it was always explained to me is that integers are used for hard mathmatical calculations and floating point is used when you don't need to be as precise (like in a computer game where being off by 1/100000000 of a pixel really doesn't matter.)

They say 4-5 times faster on the macbook pro because when they ran the integer test it went 4 times faster than a G4 and when they ran the floating point test it went 5 times faster than a G4.

But, the tests were designed specifically for dual core processors, so running them on any single core system (like the G4) would make them sluggish. I want to hear some bench marks for a single core tester as well. So if anyone runs one, tell me.

And I found the link, here it is reposted:
http://weblog.infoworld.com/enterpri...c_perform.html

And as a final statement, rejoice all ye stock holders, Apple went up about $10 a share from a few days ago. It rests at 83 a share (or so).

yeah that was happening to me too it finally started to play well. id like to download all the keynotes on my hd but the only program i know of on mac that can do this is snapz pro and it's alright when it works www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/ does anyone knows a better program? free would be great :)
