Favorite keyboard shortcuts!

I always love learning new key combos. It makes me look impressive, and saves time! Here are a few of my faves
of courst first ont he list is Command Space, to open spotlight. I use this to launch all my apps, except the lucky few who live in the dock

in Mail :
Command N= new message
Command R= reply
Command+shift+d=send message ( this is the best of all in my opinion)

In safari
command [ =back
command ] = forward

What about you guys? any great ones I'm missing?

How about Command-C and Command-V for copy & paste?
:)

Just look at the menu items for any action that you do frequently and you will see the keyboard shortcut listed at the right side.

I moved this to the OS X Experiences section since it isn't really a help request.

I really like my custom Ctrl + Space Bar and Ctrl + Command + Space bar so that I can flip through the language palletes (I speak a little Japanese, it's awful useful to have access to a way to type it up.)

I also use Command + Space to bring up Spotlight on occasion, though I prefer the finder.

I also like Shift + Command + N for new folders on my desktop and anywhere else.

And lastly, I enjoy pushing Command + Del to delete files, much easier than actually dragging things to the trash bin...

Oh, and F12, so I can play my poker game whenever I get board.

sinequanon 12-24-2005 03:01 AM

And

Cmd + Shift + Del for emptying the trash

Cmd + E for ejecting

shift-e 12-24-2005 08:26 AM

fave shortcut

command-Q
command-shift-delete
command-c/v/x
and
command-shift-b
in iPhoto for batch processing
command-n
in iCal

I forgot Command + Space, which is what I reassigned to toggling between languages, since that's what it was in all versions of OS X before Tiger.

I disabled command space. I frequently hit that combo in error when I merely want to hit the space bar...and having spotlight open whenever I did that wasted lots of time!

If you don't have quicksilver, get it. Ctrl + space gets me everywhere i need to go.

Well, one shortcut that does both for me is the simple arrow key and command-arrow key navigation in Finder. When I'm navigating to a file, I normally touch nothing but the arrow keys and the command key, using the command-down shortcut to open files and folders. It's the fastest method I've found for doing this, and watching me navigate the Finder on a Mac drops the jaws of several of my Windows friends. :-p

You can also press a letter key to jump to the first file/directory beginning with that character. Like yourself, I only ever use the keyboard to traverse directories, and open files.

Also, Apple - ` (the left apostrophe near the bottom left of the keyboard - well, mine at least) switches between windows of an open application. Annoyingly however, if you do this while changing apps with Apple - TAB, it cycles backwards, rather than changing the focused window of the app highlighted. It wastes so much time taking my finger off the Apple key, and putting it back on again!:D

Well, there are lots of keyboard shortcuts I like (though a bunch of them are self-assigned to various apple scripts :) )
Some of my favourite built-in are:
CMD-OPT-SHIFT-Q - To log out, without a prompt)
CMD-CTRL-EJECT - To reboot the computer without a prompt
and some already mentioned earlier in this tread.

My biggest all-time #1 command key in OS X has got to be COMMAND-2. Why oh why won't Apple allow you to make LIST the default view in all folders?

GavinBKK 03-04-2006 11:29 AM

What is Command H actually doing, systemwise?

Command+C Copy
Command+V Paste
Command+` Cycle through windows

Command+Delete Delete selected file(s)
Command+Shift+Delete Empty Trash

Command+Q Quit Application
Shift+Command+4 Sizeable Screenshot
Ctrl+Command+D Looks up in dictionary with Mouse over.

I'd have to say these are my favs:

Exposé F9, F10, F11
Dashboard F12
Custom iTunes control with SizzlingKeys F8 for play/pause, Cmd-Optn-Left/Right for previous/next track
Custom control (using SizzlingKeys) Cmd-F12 for going to sleep
Emptying trash without dialog Cmd-Optn-Shft-Delete
Closing a or all windows Cmd-W and Cmd-Optn-W
Switching and/or quitting apps Cmd-Tab (in conjunction with Cmd-Q)
Switching windows Cmd-`
Selecting some or individual items Shift-Click or Cmd-Click
Hiding apps Cmd-H
Spotlight Cmd-Space
Select all, copy, and paste Cmd-A, Cmd-C, Cmd-V
White On Black As mentioned, Cmd-Optn-Ctrl-8 (this might have to be invoked in Sys. Prefs. first) (This screws up people at school.)
Zooming in and out Cmd-Optn-Minus or Plus (this might have to be invoked first too) (This also really screws people up at school.)

I'm sure there's some other obvious ones I'm forgetting, but those are my most often used. :)

CMD-R: Reveal in Finder

CMD-R: Reveal in Finder.

When a file is selected in many apps, like iTunes, or when you've selected an alias, you can use CMD-R to find the file [or the alias's original] in Finder.

Never knew that one!

I almost always keep my left hand on the Command key in case I need to use a combo.

Ana osxpounder, it's Command+R. Shift+R just makes a capital r.

ie.
Code:

R

osxpounder 08-23-2006 01:29 AM

Whoops. Of course you're right. I was typing Shift and thinking Apple key. My bad. I edited that to fix it.

Excellent, I've been control - clicking -> reveal in finder all these years…

fat elvis 08-24-2006 08:14 PM

nerdiest. post. everrrrr.

LOL. My fav is Control - Eject to access the ShutDown menu.

ThreeBKK 08-27-2006 03:23 PM

Command + . is a big time saver, especially with iTunes internet radio re-buffering and accidental clicks in Safari.

One very cool one if you navigate with the keyboard is control + F2. That allows you to access the drop down menu with using your mouse. You navigate with the arrow keys instead.

Another time saver is using option + brightness (F1 or F2) or volume (F3, F4, or F5). This opens the System Preferences panel for those controls.

I totally agree with that. In fact, I would like to have a way to select which of the three views I want as default. Then again, something like that would knock out any preferences which have been set for individual folders. That's a price I'm willing to pay for total control.
