Do QT movies play in dock on Tiger?

Do QT movies play in dock on Tiger?

I noticed it's not doing it like it used to in Panther.

chabig 12-08-2005 09:59 PM

They play in my dock.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamnnnnnnnnnn! I swear this mac has given me more little problems than I'd like to admit. They really screwed up on theis tiger or this iMac G5. Jeez.

Since most people are not having the troubles you seem to be having, you should suspect that there is something wrong with your particular installation or the extra stuff you have installed.

You should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions:
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ (see the "My Mac needs help" section)
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04011205473937
http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=7269
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html

In particular, be sure to try logging in as a different user to see if the problem exists there. (Create a new user via the Accounts preference panel if you only have the one user account so far.)

raydouble 12-09-2005 06:44 PM

I created a new account. Same problem there. I am not going to go through all this stuff just so a video can be visible in my dock.

I just thought maybe some of you had experienced the same thing and there was an easy fix. I may just erase all my QT application crap and download it again from apple's website. Maybe that will help but I doubt it. Other thatn these little things, my iMac is still great. It's just that I didn't expect these problems with this computer. It's a disappointment. I don't do anything weird with my Mac, just basic stuff. No reason there should be any problems.

Thanks, though. Glad I at least have this board to complain to.

Are you sure you haven't installed any haxies or other system "enhancements"? And regarding QuickTime, look in /Library/QuickTime for plugins you might have installed.

raydouble 12-09-2005 08:36 PM

I'm sure. And there were no strange plugins. What's a haxie or an "enhancement?"

hayne 12-09-2005 09:05 PM

E.g. something that provides a change to the look or feel of the GUI.

raydouble 12-09-2005 11:01 PM

GUI? I assume that's something user interface? Anyway, I never changed the look of anything. I'm a basic user, using my computer for email and digital video and music.

I'm not sure what you mean by "strange". Were there any files under /Library/QuickTime ? By default, OS X ships with nothing in that folder.

And yes, GUI = graphical user interface

Extra things that you have installed to the system are usually found under /Library/StartupItems

raydouble 12-10-2005 10:42 AM

Strange as in, nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, I never even did any ordinary modifications to anything on my computer.

There was nothing in the libray/QT folder. I will erase all my QT stuff and reinstall- hopefully that will fix. Then again, i hope eraseing all my old QT stuff (not the movies, just the old QT stuff like random updaters and other QT crap that is in my "Old G3" folder) and reinstalling anew will help.

chabig 12-10-2005 11:33 AM

What I would do in your case is download and install the 10.4.3 combo updater.

Chris

raydouble 12-10-2005 11:55 AM

I have 10.4.3. What are you talking about "combo updater"? Is that something different?

Apple supplies updaters as downloads on its web site. Even though you have already updated to 10.4.3 via Software Update, you can download and install the "combo updater". This sometimes fixes strange problems.

raydouble 12-10-2005 08:08 PM

Has nobody on this entire board ever had this happen or is the lack of response just because it's a boring topic? Can I take my iMac to an Appel Store Genius bar? If so, is it free?

chabig 12-10-2005 11:35 PM

I think you have a very rare problem, so nobody really has "the" answer. Have you tried the combo updater?

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...1043combo.html

Chris

raydouble 12-12-2005 03:25 PM

Just great. A RARE problem. I am so lucky. The combo updater only updates the iPod software from what I've seen. :/

giskard22 12-12-2005 03:50 PM

That's the wrong updater, then. More details: Apple releases OS version updates (i.e. 10.4.1, 10.4.2, 10.4.3) in two versions. There's the "delta" version and the "combo" version. Delta works only if you're updating from exactly 1 prior version. So if you already have 10.4.2, you can download the plain old Mac OS X 10.4.3 Update. If you have an earlier version of 10.4, you have to download Mac OS X 10.4.3 Combo Update, which contains all the files from updates 10.4.1, 10.4.2, and 10.4.3.

Because the Combo update includes more files, people sometimes (regularly?) find that downloading the latest one and running it manually clears up strange problems.

edit: You might wait for confirmation from others on this before doing it, but it would probably help if you go into /Library/Receipts and delete the receipt for 10.4.3 (on my system it's MacOSXUpdate10.4.3Patch.pkg) before running the update. This fools the installer into thinking the updated files are not already installed so it makes fresh copies. If you don't do this, I think it may not overwrite files that are already there.

raydouble 12-13-2005 12:53 AM

Cool. Do you guys agree with giskard22 that this is a viable solution? If so, it sounds like it may work!

chabig 12-13-2005 09:02 AM

We don't know if it will work, but often running the combo updater can fix strange problems. I recommend you try it. There is nothing to lose as it certainly can't break your system.

Chris

raydouble 12-13-2005 01:01 PM

Nope.
:(
whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine

giskard22 12-13-2005 01:16 PM

Did you just run the updater, or did you also remove the receipts?

Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.QuickTime.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist and restart.

Is it just when minimized, or do movies always stop playing when the window loses focus? As in, if you just switch apps, do movies pause? What if you open a second one? Does the first one pause?

raydouble 12-13-2005 10:18 PM

Nothing works. Maybe when they update QT, huh? Or maybe when Leoprad comes out.
:/

chabig 12-14-2005 01:09 AM

Have you tried reinstalling Quicktime?

After that, I'd get Tiger Cache Cleaner, or a similar utility and start cleaning caches.

Chris

raydouble 12-14-2005 12:11 PM

Yes,reinstalled QT 3 times... a Tiger Cache Cleaner? I'll google it. Thnx :)

chabig 12-14-2005 08:32 PM

When searching for software, don't jump to Google. Instead try www.macupdate.com or www.versiontracker.com (I prefer the first).

Chris
