Pioneer DVR110D problem

This is an EXTERNAL FW unit. After a - buffer underrun/wouldn't eject/force quit/restart - it doesn't want to see any media.

From System Profile:

FireWire Bus:

Speed: 400 Mb/sec Speed

911Plus Drive:

Manufacturer: Oxford
Model: 911Plus Drive
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Not Supported
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: Yes
Speed: 400 Mb/sec Speed
Unit Spec Id: 24734
Unit Software Version: 10483
Firmware Revision: 1.17

In an effort to reinstall I dumped the Disc Recorder folder from the Utilities
with no result.
I really need some helpful advice.
Thanks,
ED

Exactly what media have you tried?

Trevor

stampar 12-04-2005 09:23 AM

Thank you for your response.
I believe I was using 12X CDR by WINDATA, same ones I've successfully used before. The only inscription is in the clear center part of the disc:
LH3 1 05 IF063 1 4082 D1.
At this point the unit doesn't respond to ANY media.

stampar 12-04-2005 11:20 AM

Follow up:
after download/install PatchBurn3.1.3 I have this, but no change otherwise:

911Plus Drive:

Manufacturer: Oxford
Model: 911Plus Drive
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Vendor Supported
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: Yes
Speed: 400 Mb/sec Speed
Unit Spec Id: 24734
Unit Software Version: 10483
Firmware Revision: 1.17

This implies that at this point you've tried media other than Windata. Can you tell us all the media that you've tried and that it won't respond to?

I doubt this is a media problem, since I've used same successfully earlier, but here it is: for playback - commercial music CDs, commercial DVDs, various brands CD-Rs, Memorex 2X DVD-RWs;
for burning - Windata 8X CD-Rs, Memorex 2X DVD-RWs
btw, open/close buttons work in both - Titanium 7 and iTunes 6.0.1

Have you run a cleaning DVD on the drive?

Trevor

stampar 12-04-2005 01:52 PM

Do you mean the lens cleaner? I do have a cleaning CD.

trevor 12-04-2005 02:08 PM

Yes.

Trevor

stampar 12-04-2005 02:17 PM

Did not help.
I have this unit since Nov.25, so it's parctically new.

Try creating a brand new user on the same computer. Now test to see if the brand new user has the same problem with this external case.

Trevor

Before I do that; just noticed while trying to use the cleaner CD, that it did not even spin once. In general I do not here any life from the unit exept for the cooling fan.

"Try creating a brand new user on the same computer."

I've followed your suggestion to no avail. Sorry.

trevor 12-04-2005 04:15 PM

If the drive is not even spinning, then your drive has failed in some way. The case may be fine, you could try putting a different optical drive mechanism into the same case if you wish.

I'm still within 30 days return policy, so I'll exchange, and when I get another unit and another problem with it, I'll bug you again :)
Thank you for your time and sorry for the same,
ED

I know this is about a month old. But, if you're still out there Stampar. try to update the firmware on the DVR110D and see if that helps. The older firmware had trouble reading certain media. Newest firmware update is 1.3.7

stampar 01-31-2006 11:25 AM

Pioneer 110D: still a problem

Thanks for trying to help.
I have replaced the unit and it worked very nicely for about 2 weeks, then the same trouble: it will not see an inserted disc - DVD or CD, blank or otherwise. I have just updated the firmware to the latest 1.3.9 using Virtual PC via USB and that did not help either. I'm at loss.

If you're using OS X 10.4.4, remove Patchburn's patch (This is an option in the Patchburn utility). It's no longer needed. Download and run DVRFlash to see if your computer is recognizing the drive correctly. Post the result here. BTW: DVRFlash will also let you update your firmware directly from the Mac instead of having to run VPC.

OK, here we go:

Okay. Your Mac sees and communicates with the drive fine. It's likely something in your OS X installation. To test this, place your OS X DVD into the drive and restart the computer, holding the Option key down. If the drive is working, it should show the OS X Install disc and let you boot from it.

Note: To boot OS X, the drive must be connected via Firewire.

stampar 02-03-2006 09:24 AM

Nope. Did not show and did not spin the disc or any disc. Same happened with the previous drive. It just seems very strange that 2 drives in a row would have the same flaw.

Does your drive have its own power supply or is it relying on the port's supply? However the enclosure is getting its power, it appears to be insufficient for the DVR-110. Like the DVR-109 series, this drive uses much more power than previous models. It's quite apparent the enclosure used isn't supplying quite enough…

This is great news, this means Apple supports 110D as Superdrive with 10.4.4 update?

On the other subject, I have 110D in external firewire case and last night my iMac G4 20" couldn' see it (Apple system Profiler said: Unknown device). Restart didn't help, but shut down and power up fixed it.

Not so much newfound support, but apparent acceptance of the consumer's desires to use the drive of their choice. The drive still appears as Unsupported rather than Apple Supported/Installed, but Apple's software will still accept it and use it. This does not mean that if you have problems, Apple will offer support.

The fault would have been in your Firewire bridge device (The drive's enclosure). Turning off, disconnecting followed by the reverse would restore the visibility of the drive.
