Browser under XDarwin?

Hello,

Should I use Netscape as browser to view manual or online help, or is it possible to use another browser under XDarwin, such as Amaya or Mozilla?

In case I need Netscape, where can I find it (it does not appear in the cvs tree of fink - I use finkCommander if it matters)?

Many thanks in advance

sao 08-19-2002 02:45 AM

Miga,

I use:

mozilla -----------1.0.0-1----------Web browser and mail reader
dillo ---------------0.6.6-1 ----------Small simple web browser
lynx ---------------2.8.4-1 ---------- Console based web browser

All installed with Fink.

Hello Sao,

Maybe I did not explain well what I wanted.

Say I want to use Mozilla instead of Netscape to view the Gimp help (proposed browser are internal browser or Netscape).

Is it possible at all? and how?

I already use Mozilla as web browser under MacOS X.1.5, if I install Mozilla for XDarwin, would it mess up with the one under Mac OS X.1.5?

Cheers

sao 08-19-2002 10:44 AM

Miga,

I use the internal Gimp Help Browser. I'm checking though...maybe in the gimprc or the web-browser.smc script. Will check further.

In Siag, help calls automatically for dillo or lynx.

Maybe you ask in the Gimp mailing-lists:

http://www.gimp.org/mailing_list.html

Many thanks, Sao.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was busy with configurating properly windowmaker with the gui.

It works like a charm.

Then I download dillo as you told me. Many thanks for the tip. It's really fast.

The problem with Gimp (internal browser or netscape) is not resolved. When I try to use the internal browser, nothing happens., unless I try to load an url, then I get webbrowser corrupted (don't know why). At the moment, I use a Mac OSX browser to go to the site or some pdf I've downloaded.

Sao,

How did you install Mozilla 1.0? Fink says my Mozilla is up to date at 0.9.9-4...

Thanks

sao 08-22-2002 11:03 PM

JBoivin,

You need to configure fink to use unstable by editing

/sw/etc/fink.conf

add unstable/main and unstable/crypto to the beginning of the Trees: line, and then run the command 'fink index'.

Code:

Trees: local/main unstable/main unstable/crypto stable/main stable/crypto local/bootstrap
Then run 'fink selfupdate-cvs'

and 'fink install mozilla'

JBoivin 08-22-2002 11:41 PM

I'll try that.

Thanks!

Hello Sao,

When I try to use unstacke packages (sources) I get an error conflicting with some gnome libs.

I go to the gnome site, they say you must redirect some libs in others places, but where?

Do you have any ideas?

sao 08-23-2002 05:07 AM

Miga,

I have no idea which error or package you are talking about.

There is a proper way to deal with problems presented when installing from source with Fink :

-First write your system configuration:

What OS version? ('sw_vers')
What version of make? ('make -v')
What Fink version? ('fink --version')
What version of the dev tools? ('cc -v')

-Tell us which package are you trying to install.

-Copy paste in your post the last 10 or 15 lines of your error log.

Cheers...

PS: Also, if you install from source and use unstable you need the Developer Tools installed.

Miga 08-23-2002 08:48 AM

Hi Sao,

I've just installed Jaguar a few minutes ago. So give me some time to install the new Developer tools and I'll you give any details as mentionned (sorry I'm so new to this stuff), if I have some problems.

Hi Sao,

Well the installation of Jaguar and first troubleshootings are resolved, so now back to Gimp browser.

OS Version:
ProductName: Mac OS X
ProductVersion: 10.2
BuildVersion: 6C115

Version of make:
GNU Make version 3.79, by Richard Stallman and Roland McGrath.
Built for powerpc-apple-darwin6.0

Fink version:
Package manager version: 0.10.0
Distribution version: 0.4.0.cvs

dev Tools version:
Reading specs from /usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/3.1/specs
Thread model: posix
Apple Computer, Inc. GCC version 1151, based on gcc version 3.1 20020420 (prerelease)

I'v updated Gimp to latest version 1.2.3-9. I have no more error log within Gimp but the internal package does not work. Install with FinkCommander from cvs source and with unstable packages activated.

Here is the complete XDarwin session with loading of Gimp and trying to load an URL from internal GIMP browser.

Miga,

Please run in terminal:

'fink list --section=x11-system'

and tell me what is says.

It should be something like this:
Code:

Miga,

It looks you have installed XFree86 manually.

You need to either change to a Fink installation of XFree86 by installing the package xfree86-base/xfree86-rootless 4.2.0-11 in unstable (which builds in Jaguar), or try by getting the "jaguar xterm update" from the xonx folks and see what happens.

http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=18034

Many things are breaking with 10.2, and I would recommend a clean install of Fink. The fink developers are soon going to release a fink upgrade, if you can wait a little bit.

Cheers...

Miga 08-27-2002 04:16 AM

Hi Sao,

I had already installed the xterm update, when I answered to your previous post.

I've just installed the new (from yesterday) XFree86 42.0.1-10.2 binaries from XonX, no change.

At the moment I cannot remove the manually installed XFree86 package from inside Fink and I don't know exactly what manual installation of XFree86 has done, so I'm unable to delete the corresponding files.

I cannot either install the xfree86-rootless and xfree86-base package

What do you mean exactly by Fink clean install?

sao 08-27-2002 06:03 AM

Miga,

Here is what I would try:

First configure Fink to use 'unstable' as explained in my post above.

Then I would change from the manually installed XFree86 to the Fink package 'xfree86-base/xfree86-rootless version 4.2.0-12 in unstable that builds in Jaguar (contains Xfree86 and the XDarwin app).

For that I would do the following:

Delete your manually installed XFree86 and the XDarwin application , not your fink installation (/sw).

To do that, run in terminal:

sudo rm -rf /usr/X11R6 /etc/X11 /Applications/XDarwin.app

After it is done, close/open again the terminal.app (or type rehash) and run:

'fink selfupdate-cvs', then:

'fink install xfree86-base'

then, type 'rehash'

Close your terminal and and check your path and that your ~/.xinitrc file is in order, then double click the XDarwin.app to test.

or you can wait till the Fink developers come out with a Fink update for 10.2.

Let me know.

Cheers...

PS: By clean install I mean deleting and reinstalling, compiling everything Fink again.

Let me know.

Miga 08-28-2002 12:38 PM

Hi Sao,

I cannot remove Xfree86, complain that X11 is missing.

So, I've deleted /sw directory and all X11 directories I could find on my disk. I've reinstalled Jaguar archiving the previous system. Then I download Fink 0.4.0a as source and try to install it. I have a problem with ncurses 5.2-06 which failed to compile.

I don't know if I can use Fink as is.

sao 08-28-2002 04:26 PM

Miga,

You didnt need to delete all of /sw.

You could have removed the 'system-xfree86' package in another way.

Better you install fink with the binary installer from here:

http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/index.php

If you want to build from source, if you use the bootstrap from the fink 0-10-0 tarball, not the distribution, it will work fine.

Cheers...

Miga 09-06-2002 09:15 PM

Many thanks, Sao.

I'll wait until KDE works.
