Internet TV and it's greatness

I've been watching alot of internet tv and i love it, its pretty sweet. There are two things i use http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashb...visionvf2.html and now recently http://dtvmac.com/ The widget is pretty cool decent shows including the three stooges. But DTV is quite awesome it looks alot like an "ilife" app. Also it's very easy to use, open source and FREE. they look they put some serious time into this app because it's well thought out. So far my favorites are the mactv vidcasts (they play better in DTV then in itunes for me), channel frederator and rocketboom. Theres tons of channels and shows to watch. What are everyone else's favorite shows?

Photek 11-16-2005 05:03 PM

I tried DVT a few months ago and couldn't really find anything but I am downloading it again to give it another try......!

Unfortunate name though..... in the UK.......... DVT stands for "Deep Vain Thrombosis" where people get blood clots when being in crampt conditions on long haul flights! :D

If its got the Three Stooges its gotta be worth it!

Lose the apostrophe in the title and add one to the "its" before the word pretty.

It's means "it is" and although "apostrophe s" can indicate ownership in other instances that does not apply to the word it.

grow up people, who really gives a tiny rat(')s ass? This a forum for macs not the world conference on the preservation of the English language... jeez

Good point, marchutch. Every day on this and other forums, I cringe at the misspellings and use of language. Still, I think's it's OK to point some of that out, if one is not obnoxious in doing so.

Adults, that's who. Growing up must include using proper grammar, since grown-ups need to communicate more complex ideas than "Mac good, punctuation bad."

Very often, I don't bother trying to help with a problem because deciphering a user's post is just too difficult. While we all make mistakes, and these were relatively minor infractions, it is still necessary to point them out on occasion.

biovizier 11-20-2005 12:04 PM

I would consider the act of butting in to a help request thread and criticizing spelling or grammar without contributing to the solution to be in bad form, maybe even "trolling". On the other hand, this is the "Coat Room" and there is no technical issue under discussion. In this context, I don't think promoting literacy is a bad thing, although it remains the prerogative of the poster to be offended if they wish.

Frankly, rather than the its / it's issue, I would have thought that this statement would have been more likely to be controversial:

btw, I am a fan - I think Shemp is under-appreciated...

I would agree if poor grammar weren't so pervasive. Often, it is the problem, since simply stating the issue correctly might actually point to its solution.

Irene 11-20-2005 12:21 PM

Sometimes a clear and simple explanation (of a grammatical rule or other issue of proper usage) can teach the reader a lifelong and even be appreciated.

It would be mean to point it out if the post were about a crashed hard drive or lost tax return document which havev great urgency. That wasn't the case here, so I thought I'd share the tip in the spirit of helping the community here which so often teaches me about my computer.

marchutch 11-20-2005 12:53 PM

It's a fair cop, guv

I have to admit I was partly just trying to get some people's backs up, so to speak. In retrospect I would have to agree with those who take the line: 'correct someone when the incorrect or misguided use of language is getting in the way of coming to a satisfactory conclusion in dealing with a problem, otherwise, lets not be petty'

But each to their own. In retrospect, I also apologise for any offence caused. I was in a bad mood this morning. But now the hangover has gone I am feeling much better. And the comments about growing up? I'm a college student? How grown up do I have to be? hmmm....

Well, in the spirit of "getting people's backs up", I'd say that grown up people aren't in the habit of drinking so much that they get hangovers.
On the other hand, some people never grow up.
:)

marchutch 11-20-2005 01:26 PM

hmmmm indeed

My point exactly Hayne. Maybe it is not resposible to drink to excess. But I am in college and enjoying myself. I get my work done every day, see my friends, and party hard. Tell me what's wrong with that. As long as by the end of the day I hav fufilled all of my responsibilities, then thats all I have to worry about.
My wise old man said always says to me "get what you have to do done every day, so you can enjoy doing what you WANT to do." anyhoo, I am fully aware that I am now trolling as you guys call it, so I will stop and let you get back to discussing important things like the quality of Internet TV broadcasts, and the finer points of English grammar. adios.

rj89 11-20-2005 07:51 PM

i also think shemp is underappreciated.

You make it sound like I was agreeing with you or something. I feel compelled to state (if it wasn't clear already) that my comment was intended to imply that the answer to your "How grown up do I have to be?" question is: "More".

marchutch 11-21-2005 06:47 AM

whatever you think Hayne, whatever you think. How about I live my life, and make my own judgements about how responsible I should be, and you, and everyone else is extended the same privilege.

Back to IPTV... Yeah, we got a Mini to put in the living room just because of this. There's a lot of great tech and hacking related TV being produced on a low budget. We've seen a few good indie non-tech shows too that are fun. IPTV brings broadcast to the masses like podcasting can make anyone a radio producter.

Jay Carr 11-21-2005 01:20 PM

Thanks CAlvarez, I thought we'd lost the thread. Which would have been to bad because I went out and downloaded DTV and have been having a lot of fun with it. I found some indie music videos...to be honest I wasn't to excited about them. But then my roommate, who was looking over my shoulder, says "whoa! They have music videos!" It took me a second to figure out that he actually knew who the bands were, and was a big fan. So, thanks to DTV my roomy can keep up his indie music habit!

I couldn't resist. :D

awesome to here people are finding some cool stuff like i have (i wish i had a more powerful mac to watch channel frederator episodes without a hitch because some of that stuff is incredibly well done). Now here's a question where are the videos? Are they streaming or something because spotlight as well as ME can't find them. I want to find the actual videos so maybe another player like VLC can open them up without the hiccup. I assumed that when you click download they....download to a folder created by the program.

rj89 11-23-2005 02:47 PM

nevermind the help request just found them.

The funny thing is that I used to be an English major, you would think I could at least get my "(to's, too's, two's)" straight. And to address that topic briefly, I have no problems with correcting grammar just so long as your nice about it and make some effort to respond to the actual point of the thread. Hijacking a thread is fairly impolite after all.
