Dream Sytem
Whats you dream setup? Anyone own theres?!
|
Is this a system that could be bought irrespective of cost, or silly impossible systems like a 5GHz G5 Powerbook with a 24 battery life? :p
In the former case, it'd be: Latest top of the range (and maxed out) G5 tower with two 30" displays (upgraded graphics option too), wireless keyboard and mouse, Bose surround sound system (or Bose noise-cancelling headphones), 2TB of external storage, Canon EOS 5D camera, UXGA projector (if such a thing exists), flight joystick for simulators, 60GB iPod video, 17" Powerbook .... and people say I have expensive tastes? Never understood why .... |
I'm going to go for dreamy but realistic. I really would like one of the new 15"PB's when the x86 comes out (and I'd like it to be STABLE!) Preferably with a gig of ram and whatever the top of the line video card is for that model. Yeah, that should do me for another three years.
If you want to know my dream system..., like, dream dream... I think I'd like a new quad cell processor set up...probably 32gb's of RAM...maybe 64...no less than 10terabytes for the hard drive...probably dual Quadro's (hope I spelled that right)...and of course, the super limited platinum diamond edition of OSX 10.5.9 that allows for piloting of the space shuttle through one's own fiber optics line/satellite link up. And also allows me to run .exe games inherently (and, by some miracle, implements DirectX9 and OpenGL 2.0 correctly, and better than any windows machine). And maybe it has the ability to send sappy emails to attractive women that are so effective that I can still have a social life despite that fact that I would never be more than ten feet away from my quad 35" Cinema Display set up with a six button, laser powered mighty mouse, blue tooth keyboard, and fusion powered g-force simulation chamber for all those Formula One sims I could play... |

Me? I’m quite content with my 17" PowerBook (1GHz, 1 Gb RAM) that I bought just over 2.5 years ago. When Aperture comes, however, I may start dreaming of a more powerful machine. Still, I’ll try to refrain from investments until the Intel-embracing Macs arrive next year. Unless Apple has a great clearance sale on G5 Quads... With best regards, ArcticStones |
Top O' the line IntelPowerMac with 16GB ram and 30" Display.
|
One of the systems I work on is a dual 2.7 with 4GB memory and dual 250GB drives. That's pretty dreamy. Of course, now it's outdated as it could be a quad 2.5 instead. That's the catch with "dream" systems; outdated within the month. Still, this system flies and the only time I wish for more is during a video transcode job.

All I Have To Do Is Spend
Sung to the tune of "All I Have To Do Is Dream"
Spe----nd. Spend, spend, spend. Spe----nd. Spend, spend, spend. When I want you on my desk When I want you with Intel's best Whenever I want you All I have to do is spe----nd, spend, spend, spend. When I feel blue-- one CPU And I need you to be more than two Whenever I want you All I have to do is spend. I can make your RAM A whopping four gig cram. Then add a surround sound audio card. My monitor's a cinch-- 30 Inch! I'm spending my life away!! I need you so that I could die I love you so and that is why Whenever I want you All I have to do is spend. |
...and that says it all!
Well put, Schneb. :D |

Slightly off topic, I have been dreaming of a resolution independent OS for quite a while. This means that 12 point type is the same size on the screen as on paper, no matter what the screen size or resolution. Another way of putting this is that a ruler in Word or AppleWorks would be the same size as a ruler in the real world. Apple is just beginning to introduce this (to developers) in Tiger.

mines is like a micro implant into my nervous system (in white of course)
this will download any new information made available when required, i wil be able to communicate with all my friends etc, merely by thinking. my brain will take on a half personality as some kind of hardrive, that will record everything i expeirience accuratlely through some new quicktime format. i will be able to access these files as quick as thought i will be able to transfer files to other people with a zapping point of my finger, and burn holes with beams emitting from my eyes. |

you honestly think i'd have that foul little man inside me??

.
There is one option I long for in my dream system: The ability to quickly download files (for instance 10-15 Mb PDFs) via my mobile phone – without bleeding my wallet when the invoice comes. We ain’t there yet. – ArcticStones |
Speaking of phones, a lot of my clients dream of being able to synchronize calendars, address books, email, even documents - among computers, phones, PDA's, web pages, whatever. This could be a lot easier and simpler than it is, when it's even possible at all.
|
seriously though, it would be the ultimate, handheld fone/ipod/camera/micromac... one day.
i never bought the ipod photo as it was definately a stopgap to the video , i think the new imac has hit a pretty stable equlibrium, i give the portables another 6 or so years. its damned satisfying though isnt it? knowing that they will constantly release impressivive products as we get older. i'm proud of my addiction! |
I like 'Johnny Mnemonic'

It had all this VR bullshit, but still it was a real cyber movie, based on William Gibson's story, or even his script. It was the first time I heard the term "low tech", and I was using it for years. |
