OS X Style in Windows XP

I know this may be odd, but has anyone here made a windows machine run like osx? Such like this: http://features.engadget.com/entry/8828351836181248/

I've read about it and just wondering if anyone has done it. Any problems or complications? System crashes or perhaps Bill Gates jumps up on the screen screaming at you? I'm concerned about the complexity of the installation of some the applications because I'm not a PC user.

The reason I ask here is because I'm a mac user (obviously) and am forced to use a PC at work. I hate it, with a passion. Nothing works the way I want it to and it kills me. Any thoughts, experiences, or better places to look would be appreciated.

Run LIKE OSX is like asking a Pinto to run like an Acura. You can put a shell on top of the Pinto and fool a few friends, but you are still driving a Pinto.

However, to your post. I think that someone did this with a few skins and utilities. But I forgot where I saw this.

dappy 11-11-2005 11:02 AM

Right, sorry, ok look like OS X. I'm just wondering if anyone has done this. :)

Photek 11-11-2005 11:05 AM

yeh...... one of the PC bods at my last place used a shapeshifter to make his XP box look like OSX.... I almost vommed on the keyboard in shock!

you realy have to wonder about why some people do things.
This is sad. if you want a mac buy a mac. if you want the Acura and cant afford it, then please oh please don't stick a bunch of of tupperware and fibreglass and a few sheets of plywood on the "pinto" and hand paint it with to make it look like somehting its not.

Uh, did you read my post? Not arguing: I have to use a PC at work - there is no choice, and I want it to look like a mac. I have a G4 at home that I've been using for about 4 years.

Photek: were there any problems with the guy's PC who did it? Like was it really slow or anything?

My Russian proffessor has a PC that looks like a mac. I thought he was just using a mac with a dell monitor, until I realized it looked just a LITTLE bit off. Very convincing!

Give these a read...

Cool. I read through those the other day. And this is what scares me:

Which is why I asked if anyone has ever done anything like this

Las_Vegas 11-11-2005 02:50 PM

And Windows is so very innovative!

Ya gotta feel for Microsoft. It's like counterfeiters trying to print money that changes its bill structure every year.

He never complained about it... but I dont think he ran it that way for very long.... oddly he now uses a mac! :D

You can paint a turd pink but that don't make it a rose.

Cool. That's the kind of feedback I'm looking for. I didn't think this would turn into a "just get a Mac thread." Thanks, Anyone else with experiences?

manic_mouse 11-12-2005 11:17 PM

back in my pre - mac days i did a lot of skinning, including mac osx. it looked good but in a lot of places it was obvious that it was a skin. i was running a 500mhz celeron with 128mb ram and it almost ground the computer to a halt if i was using any processor intensive apps. i wouldn't reccomend it if your computer is low spec.

rj89 11-13-2005 01:53 AM

i was just looking at that same article a couple weeks ago thinking what the hell is wrong with these people why would they want to go through all the trouble of doing this i guess it's mac envy. It's like when an guy gets a sportscar to cover up the fact he has a small twig and berries.

Jay Carr 11-13-2005 04:06 AM

Hmm... Have you looked at Pear PC? Not exactly what you're asking about, it's an OSX emulator. Thus you can run OSX on your PC. I doubt it's very effective thought...might not be good for work.

And also, for all the people who didn't read the original post. HE HAS TO USE A PC BECAUSE HE IS AT WORK! STOP TELLING HIM TO BUY A Mac*!!! IF YOU WANT, HUNT DOWN HIS BOSSES E-MAIL ADDRESS AND TELL HIM TO BUY OUR POOR Mac BROTHER A Mac, OKAY!!!!!!

Thank you, I'll stop shouting now.

*(...just don't want it to look like an acronym...)

By what I have heard Pear PC although it "works" it tends to slow a machine way way way down.

Have to as in gun held to your head company policy sort of thing or have to as in the software that you have to work with only runs on windows.

I feel for you I realy do. I was not telling you to go get a Mac at all. it was simply a generalisation of the PC's we love windows Mac is crap (but hey lets mod our machines so no one knows for sure what we are running)

Las_Vegas 11-13-2005 05:46 PM

This all reminds me of a Demo I did for the local User's Group when 10.2 came out. I demonstrated the various utilities to customize the OS X theme. Through the course of the demo, the Mac came to look just like Windows XP. As the final portion of the demo, I ran a utility (I don't remember the name) that restored all the default Theme settings and instantly the Mac was back to normal! I got a standing ovation! :)

BTW: A bit of history. I have the distinction of being the first publisher of a Theme Utility. My shareware control panel was written for System 7.0 and was titled "NeXT WDEF 3". It replaced Apple's Black & White windows with a 4 color 3D like appearance and was very popular with early Mac Notebook owners since it didn't cause those white lines across the LCD display. While it was shareware ($5 was all I asked!), it was fully functional without payment but included the full source code with payment. I received one shareware payment. One! That payment came from Greg Landweber; The man who later wrote Aaron.

Jay Carr 11-14-2005 02:48 AM

Um...if that customizing for OSX you're talking about is free, would you care to elaborate on it? I've been using shape shifter demo...but I really don't want to spend 20 bucks to use it.

dappy 11-14-2005 01:35 PM

I don't want to use Pear PC cause it will bog my machine down. And yes I have to use a PC at work cause of policy/budget. I do web design so I do use some system heavy programs Adobe CS2, Quark, Dreamweaver etc. I'm not exactly sure what the specs are of the machine I'm on - 3.ghz pentium 4 (possibly dual processor but I'm not sure) but only 512mb of ram.
