Try resetting the admin password via the Install CD ...
|
hi
tried that and it wont let me? any help appreciated regards:confused: |
Right now, I'm concerned about the Disk Utility thing. I have never seen an installer disk not let you run a disk check on a disk because it's requiring an admin password. When you're booted to the CD, you're logged in as root; it doesn't make sense for it to ever ask for authorization.
Do you have an Apple Store near you? |
hi
no 400 miles? the original problem is still there - ie wont surf. something really strange it seem to not want to let me administor at all and it maybe its switched admintrators, when i created a new user when i boot from the disk it wnt let me reset password is there a way i can reinstall tiger all over again to get round this i.m thinking about backing up and starting again but i dont know how? regards |
Are you sure you are booted from the DVD? (the Tiger DVD)
You inserted the DVD, then restarted the Mac and then held down the C key after you heard the chime? |
imac

thats exactly what I did then when i go to utilities it says cant reset password this way? driven mad with this one  |

Please try to be as verbose (maximum details) and as precise as possible when describing what you did and what you see. Your words need to serve as our eyes and ears in understanding the situation. Please copy down exactly what the error message says and show us. It might be better to take a photo of the screen and attach this to your reply so we could actually see what you are seeing. |
sorry
i,m working on another machine so cant get a photo of the error when it says 'to open reset password you must start your computer using the mac osx install disc to do this double click the install macosx icon on the disc when installer opens choose reset password from the utilities menu' |
Can you try to assign a password to root? Sounds like your NetInfo Database is corrupted.

You seem to be quoting from some help page or other. I don't think you should need to double-click anything. When you boot from the DVD (restart and hold down the C key), it should automatically come up running the program that shows the menu where you do the reset. |

the message in my last post is what comes up verbatim when i try reset password after booting to the dvd? thanks  |

would not know how to do that  |
It doesn't sound like you're actually booting to the CD. When you do that, you don't get a Finder at all. You go straight into the installer, which has a Utilities menu at the top of the screen, not a folder.
Let's try this instead: put the OS X DVD into your computer and restart. As soon as you hear the startup chime, hold down the option key. You can let go once you get a screen with a blue background. This is the Startup Manager. Within about 30 seconds, it should display all available startup disks. There should be 2 icons, one with a hard drive symbol (and the name of your hard drive, like "Macintosh HD") and one with a CD symbol. That should be the Mac OS X Installer. Select that one, then click the arrow. |
hi
sorry tried that and it still takes me to the desktop with finder at the top, and a window with macosx install it wont boot to the dvd? |
1) Are you sure you are using the Tiger DVD ? Did you buy this at retail? Or where did you get it?
2) And when you insert the DVD and then restart the Mac and hold down the C key after you hear the chime, what happens? Please describe in as much detail as possible. Do you get any indication that tells you that the DVD is being used at all? |

yes apple bought tiger dvd when i input disc and hold down c the dvd launches from the the desktop in an open window with all the dvd content thats where it stops regards |

E.g. I imagine what you are saying you did is: "I inserted the Tiger DVD (that I bought retail) and then I went to the Apple menu (top left) and selected the "Restart..." menu item and then I waited until I heard the chime and immediately after the chime I started holding the C key down and I kept on holding the C key down until ..." Please try to give us that level of detail in your future responses. Otherwise we can't be sure what you are doing. Such extreme detail is needed because what you are experiencing seems to be a very unusual situation. So it seems that your machine is refusing to boot from the DVD. This could be due to a defective DVD drive. Or it could be due to a firmware problem. To fix the latter, try resetting the PRAM and Open Firmware as described in this Apple document: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42642 After that, try again to boot from the DVD. |
It appears that you've been skipping one important thing in our instructions. We keep telling you to put in the CD, restart, and hold down 'c' after you hear the chime. Your last post makes it sounds like you're not restarting. That's the crucial step.

giskard22 and hayne
thank you for your help with this (sorry about my lack of verbosity or clarity) most of that was due to being pissed off, and harrassed. just got back from the local mac store where they had big problems (like i did) getting it to boot from the dvd.after hours of working on the machine they got it to do like you said and the password issue is resolved. the original problem however remains. i have a network with a belkin router 2 ibooks and the problem imac g5. both the ibooks run with blistering speed, but the imac g5 gets on the internet hangs on each website for a count of between 10 and 20 before eventually changing. it virtually makes the imac unusable and has cost me a day off work already. i,ve tried various things with safari downloaded firefox (which was just as bad) to me the problem must be somewhere on the imac its just finding what it is. i truly thank you for staying with me on this one you are really nice guys just wish i could get the g5 to run like it should. thank you |
When you had it at the store, did they test the networking issue? What were the results?
I'd be interested to hear more about why they had problems getting it to boot from the DVD. It really sounds like there might be a larger problem. Do you feel like the people at the store gave it a thorough check-up? |
