Apple 'Front Row' Petition
To Apple Consumers:
Apple released many new and innovative products today, including a piece of software called "Front Row." Unfortunately this software is only available on the newly released iMacs. As a loyal Apple consumer I feel that Apple should release this software/feature as a standalone product. Apple listens to their customers, so I urge those who feel the same way to cast their vote. Please follow the link below to read and sign the petition. Apple 'Front Row' Petition < http://new.PetitionOnline.com/frontrow/petition.html > Sincerely, Nathan Sharp |
I signed it. Having gotten a new iMac in June, I won't be purchasing another for at least a couple of years, so Front Row is no incentive for me to run out and buy an iMac.
|
I want to know...
1. What online petition has ever changed anything 2. What leads us to believe Apple has said "Umm....naahh, let's not have a bigger plan for Front Row, ever. It's done." |
Exactly what I was thinking.
|
seems to me that this would be a natural add-on for the next version of iLife suite (which apple already both sells and bundles with new macs).
i agree with the idea that it should happen soon. perhaps eventually a master plan will reveal itself... is apple using buyers of the new imac as "beta testers" for the first versions of the remote and front row software in advance of some kind of product kickoff (an apple set-top server, maybe)? perhaps an updated (intel-based?) mini? |
Indeed. This question induced a rare thinking session in me and the direction is not hard to fathom.
I think Apple are out to topple M$, not by out-PCing them, but by becoming ubiquitous throughout the home (and car). You won't buy a telly from Sony - you will buy a very large iMac/server-type device that other stations throughout the house are linked to, each station choosing his/her preferred content. Mum & Dad in the front room, with the kids in their various dens, linking in as they choose. So, that said, how can I watch telly on a new iMac then? Cheers Gavin |

There is also one on the apple store (miglia) that is the same size as an iPod shuffle and does Freeview TV! |
I signed it. I agree 100%! I just bought a new G5, and that was a huge chunk of change for me. Now I have to buy a new Mac to use Frontrow? No, it's not happening!
While they're at it, I think Apple should make Photobooth a free download also. Make it so it only works with an iSight, and put it on the download page. It's such a simple little app, why not make it free? |
iNemo, my good man, where are you from in Dear Old Blighty?

Did anyone watch the keynote? If so, did you hear that guy laugh when Steve was talking about the new iPod and instead of going to video, he went to settings? He laughed soooooooooo loud!

True, and all the more reason that it should be a free download.
Ironically enough though, I wish I would've had it the other day, I just needed a quick snapshot of myslef for something and it would've been real easy with Photobooth. Instead I broke out the still camera and tripod, snapped the shot, imported it to iPhoto and exported it. I would've been so easy with Photobooth or a similar app. The point is... since it's an Apple app and it requires an iSight... why not make it free? |
hey! i would totally use it!
thing is i am pretty much doing the same thing already albeit using blutooth keyboard and mouse and a pair of eagle eyes! i have a mac as a centerpiece in everyroom, however dont particularly enjoy spending the whole night sitting right at it whilst entertaining/being entertained etc. the thought of that lovely menu whooshing up on a 20" screen at the tap of a remote control, is exactly what i've been waiting for. however having forked out on new macs pretty much every year since they went white, i kind of need to stop! i'm happy with what i have now, but feel persecuted by not having the option to purchase front row (which i will hapilly pay for, as i doubt that the remote will be free even if the software is;) if anyone hears of it going for sale on its own please post asap, i'm already hinting like mad for a potential xmas present. |
I agree about the remote control; we often wish for it, but not for iMacs which we'll never own. We use our PowerBooks plugged into the HDTV to watch shows and movies we've downloaded. Would be nice to use a remote instead of the BT mouse to control it.

AirClick -
http://www.griffintechnology.com/pro...lick/index.php express / digital media remote - http://keyspan.com/products/usb/urm17a/ I have the original digital media remote, and love it. |
I also have the Digital Media Remote. I like how it's programmable and can control any app, not just Apple's.
saint.duo, how is your DMR programmed to run the Application Switcher? Mine can't do Command-Tab properly. It's really my only complaint. |
sony ericsson k700i
hey
frontrow is nice and should be opened up to the mac world - my guess is apple will tease the ones without a new iMac just for a little while. they will then bring out a package with frontrow included with other software you have to buy. its not as big a deal as some folks think though because at the end of the day your mac is hands on e.g. you cant really read email or surf from the other side of the room - if you get my drift. any bluetooth remote can support it and my sony ericsson k700i is presently working with it well ;) kind regards |
See this thread:
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=46820 Please note the URL in the other thread is incorrect: it should read www.mcmacsite.com. In any event, the other thread is closed due to legitimate concerns that this is bootleg software. Is anyone familiar with McMac? Are they a legitimate provider? Something doesn't smell right... |
So why in the world would you post it again in this forum? If it was "closed due to legitimate concerns," it should stay closed!

My message here was originally posted prior to the closing of the other thread.
I'm not a supporter of bootleg software. I was merely commenting on a story I saw at MacCentral (a division of MacWorld, a reputable media source), and curious as to whether or not it was legit in light of the inquiries and posts here on the site. Seems the consensus here is that the software is bootleg. I apologize for any offense. |
Two thoughts..
1) Many superior iTunes controllers and Matinee for your movies! 2) My hunch is that there will be no single release for it, it'll be improved upon and released along with iLife '06. Jacques |
