Whats your WORST job and current job?

I will kick things off........

I once worked as a 'peeler' in an onion peeling factory one summer holiday.
I was peeling red chili onions on a production line......... my eyes streeeeemed non stop for 6 hours before they ran out of tears, I had to put my cloathes in the bin when I got home as they smelt so bad, I lasted all of 8 hours before I quit!

currently work as an interior designer.:D

Maxim (or FHM, don't remember which) ran a series like this. One memorable comparison was talent auditioner for Scores strip club in NYC vs. Penguin vomit researcher in the McMurdo Sound.

I haven't really had a job I hated, althought the maintenance aspects of one job involved repairing septic systems. Once you get used to the smell of raw sewage in the morning...... Great job security though. Remember, there's nothing in the septic tank that you didn't have for lunch.

"Fluffer" to both.

Caius 10-11-2005 10:52 AM

I had a paper round that paid £5 for 3 hours work.

Currently working in a pie factory, clothes don't tend to smell, its really really boring though.

Best money to be had for a college student though (£8/hour {$14/hour})

The Penguin job is probably open by now if you're looking for a change :D

Photek 10-11-2005 10:57 AM

Fluffer eh!

that must suck

Nah.. my job always has new "challenges". It does suck, but the benefits..

Photek 10-11-2005 11:28 AM

I think I would prefer a job with less of the "ups and downs", personally I think thats the one thing about your job that would really blow.

Photek 10-11-2005 11:30 AM

iNemo.......

I guess your sick of all the jokes that revolve around 'who ate all the pies!'

I once worked in a bakery and I had all the jokes about 'filling tarts with cream'

No ups and downs.. it's pretty much all lateral moves.

Remember working in a big chain's movie theater... I was the bartender there. So I was surrounded by pop-corn stands and such all day long... I was payed the same as even the ticket rippers, had to provide my own money float (for some reason the fact that i could receive tips unlike the pop-corn vendors meant that I sneeded to provide 200$ in change for my shift...) and had to share my tips with the coffee shop employe across the movie hall as he had the same status as I did and could receive tips (?????). I just lasted a few weeks (until I realy got too fed up) up until I had enough hatred for them that I told everything that was wrong about they way the screwed their employes to the manager (who replied he didn't see the problem)... Nice student job

First Job: McDonalds, 18 months of hard time

Current Job: Mac consultant for insurance company

Worst job I ever had was right after finishing high school, working for a company doing telephone surveys. The first half of the night involved calling Chase Manhattan customers, which wasn't so bad; the survey was short and people liked giving their opinions about service. Other surveys could drag on for an hour (one for Amtrak was the worst). I stayed there for six months to collect some extra cash.

After a few days of working there my ears, shoulders, and fingers were sore. There was no automated dialing.

Worst Job - Disk jockey for a skating rink - "All skate"

Best Job, present job of eight years. Creating Demo CDs for a major GIS company 5 minutes from my home in Redlands, CA.

Now, if I had to peel onions for a living, I would wear swimming goggles and latex gloves. I would then buy lemon juice in bulk to wash with. That, indeed would be a horrible job.

Worst job: Working the pit at Burger King. ...don't ever eat there... *shiver*.

Best Job: Um...to young for that part. Though I did sell Mac's for nine months at my college's bookstore. Loved it, didn't get paid enough, had to move on...

Job I'm studying for/would like: I'd like to design A.I. routines for Video Games. I figure if I get good enough I might have a girlfriend one day... If you're computer was going to be your girlfriend/wife/illicit lover what would you name her? (no, fluffer is not an acceptable answer.)

I'll stick to In-n-Out Burgers, thank you. I can SEE what they're doing, and there is tile everywhere. I also knew one of the workers and she boasted about their cleanliness.

saint.duo 10-13-2005 02:16 AM

Worst - Wendy's fast food (that really wasn't that bad, either)

Current - mac tech

dubbb 10-13-2005 04:45 AM

freelancing

Worst job- anything 9 to 5 with a boss.
Best job - freelancing.
Current - I'm broke....:)

Mac Poker

Raven 10-13-2005 11:57 AM

In my personnal opinion, the onion peeling job is still the worse one there... Fast food chains just don't treat their employes nicely to start with (in most cases, though there may be exceptions). But onion peeler ! Even if you have a nice salary, good conditions, you still are peeling onions !
Does anyone have some horror story about working in a meat factory ? lol

Photek 10-13-2005 12:27 PM

meat factory horror story?

yeh kinda...... one of my friends once worked in Browns Pie Shop in Lincoln (UK)... basically they would microwave the meat part of the pie from frozen and the pie crust would be 'freshly' warmed and placed on top!

Depending on how nice you were to the waiting staff you could recieve any number of extra ingredients... spit, snot, hair (all kinds).... need I go on?

General rule of thumb..... pack your own lunch

I worked as a "lawn boy" or "lawn maintenence engineer" depends on who is asking, for an apartment complex. Talking about hell. Digging holes and planting trees for 7 hours in the heat for only 9$ an hour is pretty horrible. Escpecially if you have Russian genes. We aren't built for outdoor-sun-on-your-back work.

I also worked at McDonalds for 3 years when I was 14. I loved it though, not a single bad story to tell.

Currently I am a mac tech for the Univeristy of Minnesota, and loving it. (You guys do most of my work for me ;))

Oh yes, Yellow, are you serious!?

I see your heart is still w/McDonalds ;) you have their catch phrase in your reply.

Raven 10-14-2005 10:14 AM

Same goes here... Currently the "Mac Guy" at Mcgill University in Montreal... Best job I've had and I get all kinds of cool mac stuff for free instead of having to choke out the money myself... Sweet !

schneb 10-14-2005 12:19 PM

My most mundane (but still, I loved it) was doing negative cutting for the military's audio visual lab at Norton AFB. This is where you take the work print that is created by the editor, then matched shot-for-shot, frame-to-frame the original negative in an AB roll. You are under alot of pressure because any error ruins the original footage. I hardly ever made a mistake which made me invaluable. I was also the only one who knew how to adjust the treddle splicers.

SC_shooter 10-14-2005 04:21 PM

While attending college, I worked as a cook at a barbeque restaurant. I got to do such exciting things as butcher hogs, throw tons of wood into a massive firepit, move tons of glowing embers, and spread them under said hogs. You never lived until you stand next to a fire that about blazing about 20 feet high in August in Columbia, SC. I'm not sure it's too much hotter in hell.

Since then all jobs have been the same, more or less. I am a mainframe programmer at a large bank.

I am currently trying to get a job, other than working with my dad in construction and plumbing, which is AWEFUL. Eight hours in the blistering heat doing manual labor is not my idea of fun. Anyway, I applied at a couple of places ( WaWa, Gamestop, the local food market ). I really want the GameStop one, just to be surrounded by gaming stuff.

schwartze 10-16-2005 10:16 PM

A little late to this.. but.

worst job: either elementary school teacher or maintenance man at a country club

currently: unemployed but working 2 part time jobs, and learning how to freelance.

I see that there are a bunch of people here who are freelancing, so I have a question for you all. All of these people that are taking me on for contract type work are paying me above board --- meaning, I need to find myself an accountant for the first time in my life. It's no longer just going to be a 1040 this year.

Any suggestions on what type of accountant to look for. The last thing I want to do is give more money to the government than I have to, or owe them at the end of the quarter/year.

Check his resume and make sure he didn't work for Enron.

For simple freelance work it's not difficult doing it yourself. Get a book and one of many accounting/small business software packages. It's worthwhile finding a GOOD (= expensive) accountant to set things up. Remember to deduct his fees :D

I'll also check for anyone who worked for Arthur Anderson. Thanks!

Now I can actually use the Quickbooks that came with my computer? Wow - excellent.

Thanks for the advice!
