Apple Event Coming Next Week

http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/10...vent/index.php

I wonder what it's gonna be...

CAlvarez 10-05-2005 01:37 AM

Intel?

I had dinner with some Intel guys last week, and couldn't help getting a feeling of "just around the corner."

A comeback of the Newton?

iPod Tera...it replaces your car battery with a terabyte of tunes.

Nah, it's the video iPod.

schneb 10-05-2005 12:35 PM

It would be nice to have the Intel box out in time for Christmas.

If it is video on iTunes, just starting with music videos, I will profoundly disappointed. I have not seen a single music video that I would not turn off in 10 seconds. Movies? I prefer to just buy them at Walmart on movie Tuesday.

The Mac Mini has been a real boon for Apple. Perhaps an upgrade or new price structure?

I agree with others who have posted, that the "Theater" motif seems to point to iTunes being able to access downloadable movies. But that would not be as big a Christmas splash as a new Intel-based Powerbook and iBook.

pantherman13 10-05-2005 08:55 PM

Slow down there schneb, your getting me excited.

I know Steve has tricked us before, but didn't he say that the first Macintels would appear in June. I doubt he would do all the developer crap just to release them ahead of schedule.

As for the video iPod, I don't think Steve wants to take attention away from the iPod nano. But then again, I could be dead wrong....

ArcticStones 10-06-2005 05:08 AM

I can imagine no bigger publicity coup than for Apple to announce:

"We have done it! Here is the new Intel-embracing Mac.
Thanks to the dedication of everyone involved, we have have accomplished this far quicker than expected.

And boy do we have some great designs for you! These machines are really great, with a radically different design. The technology is fine-tuned and we’re set to deliver from the 1st of November.

In plenty of time for Christmas, coincidentally."

Frankly, I can’t see why Apple would wait. This is what I have been suspecting all along. I never truly believed that the market would have to wait until June ’06 for the new Macs.

Crossing fingers and toes. :D

With best regards,
ArcticStones

I think your being to hard on music videos Shneb. There are many good and meaningful ones. But I think a video iPod just sounds like a battery killer and wouldn't be practical (for me at least) to buy.

hitsuzen 10-06-2005 09:53 AM

I doubt that it will be an 'earlier than expected' release of Intel powered machines. Final revisions of the ppc Powerbooks and PowerMacs maybe? whatever it is, I'm sure it's better than the recent Autodesk buys Alias horror. Being a Maya user on OS X, I'm still suffering from headaches and stomach pains after hearing that news.

The one with Jessica Simpson washing down the General Lee is the only one I can think of that fits that description... :D

As a filmmaker, I really get a charge at those who can communicate something with the medium in a new and clever way. For example, there is a hardware store called OSH, and they have an ad where all these "do it yourselfers" are standing in front of their failed home repair, then raise their hand as if saying, "OK, I give up." Extremely effective and does not say a word. Music videos (the ones I have seen) tell me nothing except, "If you are a teenager, this will get your attention."

schneb 10-06-2005 11:35 AM

OK, if I were to make an educated guess, here is my thought process on the prognostication and what the resultant announcement would be based on the subjective view of the marketing trends...

1. Sony's PlayStation Portable game player is a big hit, and not so much for games as it is for playing movies.
2. Apple has revamped Quicktime 7 specifically for playing movies from a small sized file.
3. The portable iPod has been a hit.
4. Smaller hardware items targeted for teens does much better during Christmas push.

My guess is Jobs will announce a portable movie & video player designed for that mesmerized teen sitting in the back seat, enduring his/her parent's road trip.

As for the new INTEL, I think we still have a wait.

Photek 10-06-2005 03:31 PM

Apple announcements are getting duller and duller... it will be a slightly speed bumped powerbook.... 1.8 dual core... a slightly speed bumped G5... say a dual 2.9mhz (still short of the illusive 3mhz!!) They will confirm the upgraded mac minis.... and a special anouncment of bigger HD's and longer battery life on ipods. Yawwwwnnn:D

Apple need the intel switch soon, it is hard to justify calling a powerbook a powerbook when it is NOT that powerful.... a 1.67mhzG4.... thats a slow chip compared to a powermac with a dual 2.9mhz G5. The gap between 'Power' and 'i' versions of apples hardware has never been closer.

CAlvarez 10-07-2005 10:06 PM

Told ya. :D

Photek 10-08-2005 04:28 PM

Carlos........ if thats real....... I will buy 3!

I have been waiting 4 years for one of those!

CAlvarez 10-08-2005 08:41 PM

Personally I just don't get it, but maybe that's because I already carry a movie/MP3 player in the form of a Pocket PC. Much less storage space though. I just can't picture why anyone would carry a few hours of video.

I suppose if you have no laptop AND you spend a lot of time traveling on public transportation or while someone else is driving.

Phil St. Romain 10-09-2005 01:24 PM

Agreed, Carlos, unless it's just to show off home movie clips or clips that are part of a presentation. But I can't see watching a movie on an iPod; I don't even like watching them on TV.

schneb 10-10-2005 03:10 PM

Have you ever tried sitting through jury duty? I did an eight-hour stretch, but it was alot less pain with my laptop and several good, long movies. I noticed a few people peeking over my shoulder when watching Cotton Club.

That explains it! I always wondered why some decisions in American courts seem to have been decided by juries that had things other than justice on their minds.

So American justice isn’t blind – it’s just distracted by movies and games.

;)

Photek 10-10-2005 03:49 PM

ArticStones.... where you from in the world? You have an almost english sense of humor! (thats not intended as an insult!)

BUT...... as I predicted, all the rumor sites think there will be a few new ipod styles..... possibly a pink madonna ipod!! (just what the world needs!) but also upgraded powerbooks and powermacs!!

Norwegian. But I spent 12 wonderful years in California, so when I offer a jibe, I do so with affection. (Hope you don’t take any offense, Schneb.)

...whatever is coming in the iPod world, I personally am quite content with my 1G version. Our kids make fun of me upgrading my cellular only every three or four years or so. Gadgets can be fun, amazing and beautiful. But I never quite bought into what Laurie Anderson called "the personal arms race".

I believe Phil started a wonderful thread – Gadgets, schmadgets…

Best regards,
ArcticStones

If this announcement is iPod-related, I'll totally yawn my arse off.

so what would knock your socks off? I'm antsy only becuase of the nano. Apple should have known that the nano would be a hit with the market. Would they blow their load on the first announcement and then follow up with a lack luster "One more thing..." announcement? If they do, Apple could cry wolf too many times and piss off their fanboys.

Aside from a video iPod, the only thing that'd get me giddy would be MacOSX86 for the masses :D :D :D
I think the video iPod is feasible. The PSP is case enough that the market can support a multifunction handheld device. With Sony pushing UDP, perhaps Apple won't be so reluctant to get into a market this young.

Anything Leopard or Intel related. It's been awhile, but I think those have to do with 'puters. ;)

mclbruce 10-10-2005 10:42 PM

Brace yourselves, it's gonna be a pink iPod. Not just any pink iPod either, but cross branded...

http://www.sanrio.com/

The Hello Kitty iPod is on it's way! You may laugh now, but when you see Steve in a pink turtleneck you'll know I was right.

Photek 10-11-2005 03:47 AM

Please let it be this! (half way down)

http://www.hardmac.com/news/2005-10-10/#4588

Quad processor macintel!

fat elvis 10-11-2005 01:20 PM

mmmm...if a quad system came out I'd start using Maya again.

It felt too slow on the Mac for my taste. It was hard to ever admit that, but on Irix or NT it was a ton faster.

ArcticStones 10-11-2005 01:47 PM

Knockin’ me socks off ...

Well, here is what would knock my socks off:

“Apple has just announced iPod movie, which claims "1000 movies in your pocket", featuring a 5 Tb drive.

As an option, you may purchase a packet containing “The Best 1000 Classic Movies of the 20th century”. Pre-loaded.

Included are universal cables and wi-fi hook-up to your TV, as well as the 8-inch Private version of the revolutionary Apple SoftScreen. This high-resolution screen unfolds without a wrinkle, thanks to the "shape memory" of its 3 micron thick background material.

Apple’s portable SoftScreen is available in sizes ranging up to 72 inches, with convenient re-usable, instant wall attachments.”

THAT would knock my socks off!

But to answer the jibe. Jury duty is not the sitting and listening to evidence, I would pay attention to that. No, this is the long wait to find out whether you are selected or not. In other words, "Sit in this room with 200 others and wait for your number to be called." Yes, it took 8 hours just to find out that they "settled" and that we could go home. Heck, email me at home you morons! If you need me, I can be there in 15 minutes! Augh, the humanity. Then there's the California DMV... AUGH!!! :O

Raven 10-12-2005 01:53 PM

Just seeing the list on that one makes my head spin... Your talking about a dream machine that'd cost as much as a house ! lol
By the way... Can't remember what time the conference is at... all the palces that have this info are so clogged upw ith hits that I can even check... And please don't forget to include the time zone ! I'm on Eastern.

fat elvis 10-12-2005 01:59 PM

the conference is wraping up right now...

New iMacs 1.5GHz - 2.1GHz in 17" and 20". Prices $1299, $1359, $1699, $1759. iMacs come with FrontRow Bluetooth Remote, iSight, .

iPod with video 320 x240 2.5" screen

still waiting to see if any new PowerBooks are coming out too...

schneb 10-12-2005 02:05 PM

Thanks for the update. The Apple Store site is being updated, so I can't get any info there either.

4x3 screen and NOT 16x9!? Nooooooooo!!!!! :O

styrafome 10-12-2005 02:12 PM

So predictable. Apple will sell the 4:3 iPod to everyone too crazy to resist for the next 6 months. Then, 6 months from now, they'll have an iPod with 16:9 viewed sideways like those handheld game devices. and everyone too crazy (and rich) to resist will buy the iPod all over again. And that's how Apple's been having record quarters.

schneb 10-12-2005 02:14 PM

Ahh, I think you are right on the money. I'm not one of those knee jerkers. At least not trying to be when the Intels arrive. ;)

biovizier 10-12-2005 03:01 PM

I can't seem to find firewire listed in the specs of any of the new iPods... If this is the case, since OS X doesn't support USB booting, this might make the iPod less versatile (and justifying their purchase to the accountants more difficult)...

pantherman13 10-12-2005 03:16 PM

was there a keynote speech? When will i be able to watch it via QuickTime?

Well, I’m going to listen to my 1.generation iPod tonight – with a grin on my face. Thinking of all the money I’m saving by not having updated yet; and not rushing to buy anything for another 6–24 months. In fact I’m quite content. Mmmmm...

Still waiting for that iPod with the SoftScreeen.

:)

fat elvis 10-12-2005 05:47 PM

Looks like another big announcement coming October 19th to "unveil Apple’s latest pro innovations.”

schneb 10-14-2005 06:18 PM

To be held in New York City on October 19, 2005 on the eve of PhotoPlus Expo. So based on that, I see the following in the chicken entrails...

iPhoto 6* - A full media (movies, audio, graphics, photos etc) archive and search app. Will reference, not copy media, will be able to keyword search according to Spotlight comments (how stupid that it does NOT do that now).

iShot - A 5 megapixel camera a tad larger than the iPod Nano.

Upgraded version of Mac Mini

Desktop versions of the first Intels

I doubt #4, but I can dream.

Craig R. Arko 10-14-2005 07:57 PM

iTunes 7. ;)

GavinBKK 10-16-2005 04:03 AM

A Norweigian using the "offense" spelling and an American using the "arse" spelling - fascinating, Mr. Spock.:D

Wouldn't it be ironic if they have just managed to shoehorn a G5 chip into the PBs just as they are going over to Intel.

Just a thought.

Ok, I might be living under a rock for the past few days but
Another one? Is this going to be a once a week thing?
Pro Innovations? meaning PowerMacs/Powerbooks?

They are really trying to make me spend money just when
I decided to sit back and wait for the Intel machines.
They failed to do that this past 2 events now
I have to brace myself for another announcement.

No rock, just look at the calendar. Apple is finally getting into the Christmas spirit. No, not the one that expanded the heart of the Grinch, the spirit of increased consumer spending.

My wife has trouble buying gifts for me, so I give subtle hints like, "Hey honey, look at this! The Complete Collection of Calvin and Hobbes is available in October for only $95! That would sure be neat for my birthday! I got it early and have been LOVING it. Great quality pages in a wonderful hardbound package.

Perhaps I will do the same for whatever is announced on Wednesday. (heh)

schneb 10-18-2005 06:42 PM

Looking forward to tomorrow's announcement and a new Apple Store page to drool over. ;)

pantherman13 10-18-2005 11:09 PM

HOLY CRAP

dual-dual-core 2.5 GHz G5...mmmmmmm power
