Buying a new G4 tower?

The new dual G4 - 1 gHz towers are out - are you getting one? It still has the 133 mHz bus speed.

lerkfish 01-28-2002 10:31 AM

LOL! well, since I am the first to respond, right now my side is winning 100%!!

hehe.
I voted holding out for quad G5 only because I can't afford at this point to buy until there is a dramatic improvement since what I have works just fine.

Craig R. Arko 01-28-2002 11:35 AM

I added a couple more options to the list.

edlake 01-28-2002 01:39 PM

It will probably a couple of years before I get another Gx. Mine is only a year old. Besides there is other stuff grabbing my money right now.:D

Hey, STWP. ;) It's nice to be in agreement with you. And, shock of shocks, here's a poll question where I'm in the majority. Goodness knows I need a new computer at work. One strategy is to wait until the G5's hit the market and then gobble up some G4 deals.

griffman 01-28-2002 06:06 PM

Prices on Dual 800s dropped on eBay today ... can't wait to see what happens to them when (if?) G5's ship at MWNY in July.

I wonder what will ship in July. 10.2? Revised Titanium?

Craig R. Arko 01-28-2002 06:24 PM

Yes, I believe it's likely that the new low-power 7455 G4 chip intoduced with these units is destined for the TiBook before long. Maybe even the iBook at lower speeds and it's bye-bye G3 altogether.

My real question is: if G5 appears in New York will the OS be 64bit by then to run on it? If so, who thinks those machines will still boot OS9 natively, as opposed to just Classic?

Maybe I'll start a new poll. :D

Naturally

Why should I not buy one?

So, the bus is still running @ 133, but hey.. It's new, it's cool and it's faster than any Mac out there.. For now.

Apple Store here I come.

interesting article at theRegister about the new G4's

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/53/23851.html

overall positive, and it helps us to consider how the machines stack up to the competition.

wonder if these are cost considerations?

A buddy of mine was considering the dual G4/800, since the new machines dropped the price of the old ones by about $1,000. He said "It's $500 cheaper than the new dual 1ghz".

After pointing out that he gets 2mb of L3 cache AND a GeForce4 AND a total 'speed bump' of 400mhz AND new lower-power chips for the $500 ... he ordered the dual 1gb machine ;-).

ha! i love that story! magnificent! that's the machine i want, too. i hope your buddy lends us his review, and that it's a great Xperience for him.

thanks, rob.

I'm holding out for the G5.

My current Mac is a Dual 450 G4 and I don't have any speed problems with it...hell, I think it's overkill for what I'm actually using it for. And it's only a year-and-a-half old. I like to keep my machines 2 - 2.5 years before I replace them.

I figure that puts me due to buy a new Mac in the Fall/winter timeframe, somewhere between Seybold and MWNY.

I'm willing to bet that the G5 will be out by then :D

BurghFan 02-15-2002 11:35 AM

Same boat, my DP 450 is 15 months old and runs great. Maybe 9-12 months from now I'll have more of an incentive to upgrade my hardware.

One more option please...

I voted that I just got a G4(Although, it was a G3) and I don't have enough money for a new computer.

But you should have an option, such as: "Poor College kid, can't afford it either way. Maybe someone will feel sorry for me and buy me an old G4?"

I like that option!

Alas, I know this will never happen. Tis why I'm saving my pennies(And they REALLY do add up! I have $120 worth of pennies! Been saving for going on 2 years!).

Can anyone point me in the right direction to post about an application that is soon to be released(Mine!). If I'm not allowed to do that anywhere, then I'll do it anyways... heh. :D

Future purchase

My G4 400MHz is only a little over a year old.

My Amiga 2000 (33MHz 68030 still in use) is about 15 years old.

OS 9 was very frustrating for me, as I was used to having a command line to mold the way my machine worked under the GUI. Also the multitasking wasn't really.(I think anyone who uses OS X will agree)

Am I going to wait another 15 years?
Probably not!

Am I going to wait for an order of magnitude?
Probably.

Lets see thats a G6 or G7 4GHz.

With the 3D holographic display, eye focal point pointer, and brain wave moniter for launching apps, it will probably be just as responsive.:D

sao 02-26-2002 11:44 AM

I don't need to upgrade now, as my G4 (867 mhz) is only three months old.

But probably will buy a dual G5 when they come out.

Cheers...

New G4

I just got a 800 G4 - love it so far with one exception. I didn't know that Apple doesn't ship G4's or Powerbooks with AppleWorks 6 installed. Basically, there isn't much software installed. I miss the software and now I have to buy it. It's included in iMacs and iBooks.

iTunes and iPhoto are excellent - so far - I've only played with them for a week or so.

Timo 04-10-2002 05:29 PM

I don't much care if the next tower is a G4 or a "rumored" G5. What I'm hoping for is a 10.2 that really lets me leave 9.2 behind. I need a more responsive GUI and VPC emulation that isn't bogged down. Hopefully, some combo of a new tower and 10.2 will allow me to ditch 9.

lerkfish 04-17-2002 02:53 PM

(hi timo!)

I gave up on VPC emulation and bought a cheap pc for my son that I have networked with the mac. This won't solve everyone's problems, but it did mine. I also regretted all that I have spent on vpc over the years (had every version, paid for all the updates), when having an actual networked pc was a great deal easier. Also, it has always wonked me that vpc is lousy for games, and that would seem to be a no-brainer for an emulator to be able to do.
Unfortunately, other competitors died or were bought out, I had those as well, and earlier versions of those were a lot more promising, ease of use and peripheral-wise than vpc (softwindows, for example), I'd have rather one of those companies had survived instead of the most agonizingly slow and bloated one.

Just my opinion, of course. I did at one time have an orange micro emulator card that was handy for its time, but it was way behind in processing power even at the time, and suffered a great deal with compatibility issues.

I just don't see (ignorant statement since I'm not a programmer) why vpc has to be so furshlergin slow. and the only choice. Cmon, cocoa programmers out there, make a shell or something!
