I thouhgt this might be kind of a fun thread. I like to see how people organzie (or disorganize) their desk. Well, here's mine. My dual 2.5 G5 with a 20" Apple Cinema Display.

Hey! I'm installing Kubuntu right now!

I need some help. I am having trouble posting pictures. They are always to big. I tried to post a pic of my desktop to get some help, but it was to big. How do you guys post thumbnails and pictures?

Thanks.

Jim.

schneb 09-06-2005 06:21 PM

Hey Jim.

The trick is to make sure your photos are 72 dpi. If your posting a 4"x5" photo and it is 300 dpi, it will be huge on the screen, but if you are posting a 4"x5" photo at 72 dpi, it will look like 4"x5".

When you have your photo ready, click the "Manage Attachments" button at the bottom when your are replying to a thread.

Hope that helps.

Schneb

cameranerd74 09-06-2005 06:48 PM

That why I just attach them. They show up as thumbnails on the post, but if you click on it, you can see it full size.

A few interesting rigs so far, but I think there's a lot more out there. :)

Wow. I'm surprised there hasn't been more responses to this thread... I thought this one would be pretty popular. Well... here's my mobile rig... TiBook 667. This shot was taken this past January in my hotel room while I was in San Francisco for the Macworld conference.

This isn't mine, but damn I wish it was! http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=35866

The link is dead.

pantherman13 09-17-2005 09:11 AM

I'm still having trouble. I have a screenshot of my desktop ready, but it says its to large. How do I make it smaller?

cameranerd74 09-17-2005 10:01 AM

PantherMan13, this utility might help. I don't use it personally, but from what I read it should be able to resize photos to web, email, thumbnail and ipod sizes. Try that.

Scale the file down to a reasonable size... and then attach it using the "attach files" function under "manage attachments" the edit post page.

I've resisted this thread for a while - mainly because I don't have a nice, shiny G5. But now (seeing as I'll have to wait for the Wintel Macs to ship before I upgrade), I thought I'd join in. And see - some of us Mac users ARE tidy! (grins)

OK, OK, I have to confess.... This pic was taken right after the studio was built. It is, sadly, a little messier than this now!

Twelve Motion 09-18-2005 05:24 AM

Eh well, maybe it is a bit messy but it's not what you think. I have 2 USB SNES controllers and I use them often, and it's a real pain to wrap them everytime, so i just leave them out. The pills are No-Doz, I kinda wish that was visible in the shot, having a bottle of No-Doz right in the middle of a messy desk just seems to novel. The papers laying around are a mess though and should be cleaned...

Whats funny is my computer itself, the software side of things, is immaculately orginized and clean. Only an HD icon on my desktop, nothing out of place, folders withing folders of intense orginization.

cameranerd74 09-18-2005 11:40 AM

Okay BigDave... you have to tell us what's all in the pic. I can see the 17" PowerBook, Quicksilver G4, then it looks like a Wintel box, and I lose it after that... tell, tell.

Just to prove that it is actually tidy now (and this was done before I saw this thread again lol):

My desk as of now.

pantherman13 09-18-2005 06:50 PM

What happened to your other computers? Surely you did not dispose of them!?

Caius 09-19-2005 02:30 AM

The external monitor is sat on the floor as I don't need it atm. The iBook is sat on the floor, the iMac is still there under a blanket (its in firewire target mode as the powerbook is booted off it till I get a new internal hard drive for the powerbook.)

The legacy macs are still safely stored in the loft :D

Ten points, mate. You got all the important stuff. From right to left:
17" Powerbook, Quicksilver G4 (with 22" monitor I scored on Ebay for just £300 NEW), Wintel box 1, Wintel box 2, my tired old beige G3 running as an ISDN server & hi-res tranny scanner, networked Laserjet 5000, fax machine - and my luvverly cherry red Fender Strat (every office should have one)!

Cheers,
Dave

Ahhhhh iNemo....... a man after my own heart.... a powerbook and a can of Carlsberg!

On that note I need to stop posting threads when I come back from the pub!

Twelve Motion 09-22-2005 06:07 PM

Hey cool CAl. Are those 2 computers? Or just a monitor and a powerbook? Why are there 2 mice?

CAlvarez 09-22-2005 08:13 PM

It's just a PB and a CRT. I alternate between using a mouse on the right and a trackball on the left, to minimize strain on my hands. Normally I have another monitor off to the left running with Synergy to a G5, but someone borrowed it. I'm about to add a fourth monitor with Synergy on a Windows machine farther left.

Twelve Motion 09-23-2005 04:29 PM

Your an omnidextrous mouse user O_O?

I was pretty hammered last night (college party, can't remember anything, etc, etc (got my g/f home safe though! don't think her mum was too pleased with the state she was in though :o ))

Anyway, woke up this morning still hammered (college was a blast, nothing like having a physics lesson then drinking carling then going to maths!) Saw mail.app was open with a new message being composed.

Turns out I'd tried to reply to someone trying to say 'yeah sure mate.' What ended up on screen was more like yuuseaeah; saireuwsa masa]\'asalk@EW!

I've posted here once or twice whilst drunk, and both times ended up having to edit the post the next morning because it was so unreadable.

Stupidest thing I've done whilst I was drunk so far is slice my thumb in half last night with my new knife. I also came onto my maths teacher at the party (shes 50+ and looks like a dog *insert smilie being sick*)

So yeah, I'm just ticker atm :D

LOL..I went to art school in San Francisco. Art schools are normally wacky, and San Francisco is one of the most liberal cities in the world. Put those together and you have alchohol in class. Of course we hid the drinks in styrafoam cups, and orange juice...but who were we really kidding.

One semester I had a 6-hour sculpture class and we'd normally have 2 pints of Guiness for lunch (no time for food). For the entire second half of class we were toasted. Didn't make for good work, but we did make a pretty cool 10-pound clay football once.

Hooooooray College :)

Omni? Haven't used my feet yet, but if they made a foot mouse, I'd try it. :D Learning to use a left-hand trackball is actually a lot easier than most people think. I've set up a lot of users with one, and only one of them has been unable to get used to it.

saint.duo 09-23-2005 09:18 PM

Took two pictures, and I'm terrible at stitching photos together, so this won't look seamless.

There's also a gigabit switch behind the powerbook.

My mate was drinking Jack Daniels and Coke in a Coke Cola can during physics. Our teacher is like 50 and totally awesome, anyway the teacher walks in and asks my mate if he can have a drink. My mate was like "err, you'd prefer not to.... " teacher took a drink and ended up saying "must remember to drink your drinks more often!"

Was very funny. My G/f's mother hates me atm :o

Lots of folks seem to have the LaCie 250Gig external HD...is this a fairly standard add-on for Mac users? Sorry - I'm a Mac newbie :)

schneb 09-27-2005 01:36 PM

Sturdy drive, great price. I have been using two 160GB LaCie Firewire D2s with my Mini with no problems.

CAlvarez 09-27-2005 02:34 PM

It's overpriced, but it always works. If you want to save a little money you can buy an external case for around $35 and just put a standard drive in it. Otherwise, the Lacie is definitely easy and reliable.

Ok, my set ups are a mess, I know, and the pictures are crap: There a bunch of speakers and an airport or two not in the pictures. Still, I thought it would be humorous to label every part of my set-up, including the nail scissors lying around at the time :p

G4 DI 733 w/ GeForce4 MX 32 MB, ADC 22" Cinema Display, huggy bear Labtec speakers (I have a pair of Apple Pro speakers but these babies crank much louder hehehe), Palm V sync with Keyspan USB serial.

Caius 10-02-2005 04:07 PM

In the Spirit of this thread (and the new 15" I got yesterday!) I've updated my picture, and also added the shot of the iMac + stuff downstairs.

On a side note, people tell me my home network is a bit complicated for 3 - 6 computers! Two routers, airport express + other bits and pieces (including Apple Remote Desktop!)

I still have 2 15" powerbooks at dads (although they are his), 2 more 15" 's on the way from ebay (fingers crossed!) plus the older stuff such as:

Mac Classic SE
LC II
Apple ][e
Newton messagepad 120

plus random stuff such as an apple cd player, apple speakers, etc.

Raven 10-05-2005 04:48 PM

Since your supposed to be a student, I'm starting to think your a drug dealer or something of the kind... Either that or your realy lucky to have such nice parents :D

Caius 10-05-2005 05:01 PM

cameranerd74 10-16-2005 11:13 AM

Is the G5 suspended? It looks like it's attached to the side of the desk.

CAlvarez 10-17-2005 12:13 AM

It's on a platform that attaches to the side of the desk, and is held there with a nylon web strap that you can barely see looped through the handles on the G5 case (it's a gray strap). The whole thing is modular and adjustable; those gray metal uprights on the sides are full of holes all the way up. You can attach various things at any level you want. There's also a cable manager underneath, and some more swivel shelves I haven't attached yet (similar to what the PB is on). I have my printer on another swivel shelf hanging off the opposite side of the G5 now. Really a nice setup for a computer-centric worker.

Raven 10-17-2005 03:54 PM

I've had other versions of this desk (or very similar ones in structure) and found them realy nice. The're realy sturdy (only not so expensive desk I had than didn't bend over time form having two heavy ViewSonic 19 inch monitor on it !), configurable, "relatively" light. Sold the last one with my old computer since for now I only have a PB for home, but will surely get a new model of the same kind when I get (hopefully soon) a new iMac G5 (don't realy need anything more than that at home).

CAlvarez 10-17-2005 05:09 PM

Yeah, by using metal they avoided the usual problems with cheap press-board furniture. Plus it's cheap, around $220 as seen there (many parts are sold separately so price varies by configuration). Easiest furniture assembly I've had to do.

jeffo 10-19-2005 12:40 AM

Ok here is mine, I finally got around to taking some pictures of it:

but my Ibook G3/500 with 640 ram and combo drive and 40 gig drive is at work so that is not pictured.
