Security Update Broke My Something...
I just installed the most recent security update (for Panther, not the buggy Tiger one). Now, a bunch of things are going wrong. A bunch of apps will bounce in the Dock, then just stop, and act as if nothing's happened. So far, this happens with Safari, Mail, and Help Viewer, but it's possible other applications might have the same problem. Additionally, Adium will load, but as soon as I try to send a message, this shows up: "Adium cannot find its message view plugin, please re-install. If you've manually disabled Adium's message view plugin, please re-enable it." Any ideas?

You should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04011205473937 http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=7269 http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html In particular, be sure to try logging in as a different user to see if the problem exists there. (Create a new user via the Accounts preference panel if you only have the one user account so far.) |
Hm, thanks for the advice. But has anyone had this specific problem? Because I've tried reinstalling the OS 10.3.9 update and the Security update, as well as Safari, and nothing's worked. I'll check out some of those ideas listed on the sites you suggested, but some of them seem a bit complicated... Thanks again.

That sounds like you have some haxies installed, like Application Enhancer (APE), Silk or the like. I had a similar problem and had to get rid of all my add on enhancers.
FWIW I don't consider Tiger buggy at all. It's an awsome upgrade, particularly Spotlight. Dashboard is OK but you can go overboard with all the widgets. Good luck. |
Ah, sorry for not being clear. First, a lot of those tips were helpful, but I just meant that I didn't want to do anything with the hardware, or reset the PMU or anything. Also, I didn't mean Tiger is buggy, but the latest Security Update for Tiger was, but since I don't have Tiger, that wasn't my issue.
Anyways, I checked the console, as per one of the steps suggested, and whenever an application crashed, it mentioned something about the JavaScriptCore. Anyone know what to do if that's the issue. And Old Toad: I did have an Application Enhancer installed (I forget which one)...would simply uninstalling it help? Thanks for your help. |
i would uninstall it, repair permissions and then reboot. those "haxies" can cause problems.
|
I am also having the same problem, I know that it was the latest security update that caused this to happen because prior to the update everything was working fine. I only use my mac for testing web pages in safari in, so I have no enhancers or anything like that installed on it.
I created a new user account and it had an identical problem, certain applications (Safari, Mail, Sherlock) would just bounce in the dock but not launch. I also tried repairing permissions, which did not fix the problem. The following error messages appear in the console whenever I try to start Safari: [CODE] ===== Sun Aug 21 2005 ===== 14:16:24 US/Eastern ===== dyld: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari Undefined symbols: WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_CreateObject expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_Evaluate expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_GetIntIdentifier expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_GetProperty expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_GetStringIdentifier expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_GetStringIdentifiers expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_IdentifierIsString expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_Invoke expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_InvokeDefault expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit undefined reference to __NPN_ReleaseObject expected to be defined in JavaScriptCore WebKit unde |

I don't see how this could happen with a standard OS X install plus updates, but it could well happen if you at some time in the past tried reverting to an older version of Safari, or the libraries, or if you had at some time installed a beta-release of Safari, etc. The easiest thing to do might be to reinstall Tiger with the "archive & install" option. If you don't want to do that, you might try compiling and installing the latest Safari version following the instructions in an article on the main macosxhints site earlier this summer. Or look to see if the WebKit library is available for download from Apple. |
I'm using 10.3.9, unfortunatly I can't do a reinstall because I don't have the disks. I bought the mac used and it didn't include the OS X disks. If I had them I would do a reinstall, since nothing on the computer is important except for safari.

Is there anyway I can do a complete uninstall of Safari so I can start with a clean slate? Also, is there anyway I can restore it to the original condition without the install disks, similar to windows restore points? |
E-Oreo:
Wish I knew what all that meant in the error message. I just recovered from some problems with other applications that occurred right after the second security update v1.1. What I ended up doing is 1 - run the file system check (fsck) from the single user mode. 2 - repair disk permissions 3 - download and run the the COMBO updater for the system level I was at (in my case it was 40.4.2). 4 - repair disk permissions again. That cleared up everything and it seemed that my G4 ran a little faster (probably the same phenomenon as a freshly washed car seems to run better). I already had the combo updater on my HD so it took very little time at all go get everything back to normal. Good luck. |

Thanks I'll try that, what is a combo updater?
My other question is how can I get the Project Builder software for OS X 10.3.9? I found where to download the latest source code for JavaScriptCore and the WebKit, but now I need to compile it and it tells me to use Project Builder to compile the source. Unfortunatly the apple site only has Xcode 2.1 (which I assume has pb built in?) for OS X 10.4 and I can't find older versions of it anywhere for OS X 10.3 -- I must say that apple doesn't seem like it has very good support for older versions, do they expect me to buy a new $100 OS everytime they bump it up .1 on the version scale just so I can use their software? They don't seem to offer downloads of older versions anywhere, but if they do please point me there. I'll try what you suggested, and if I can get a compiler i'll try reinstalling the JavaScriptCore and WebKit source. |

For Panther (10.3) and Tiger (10.4) you need XCode. There should be a version of XCode on the Apple's developer site that is indicated as compatible with Panther. As I recall, it would be version 1.5. You need to sign in on the Apple "connect" site. |
Thanks, I found it, I didn't realize that you had to login in order to see all the downloads. I'm downloading it now and am going to hope that reinstalling the source code will fix the problem ... I really don't have the money to afford a new copy of the OS right now.
Something else that just started happening, when I turn on my computer it stays grey for about 5 minutes (literally) and then the little circle of dots thing comes up and it beings loading... I don't remember it ever hanging for so long before, is this a known problem that may be influencing safari? Thank you all for your help, I am completely lost when it comes to Mac, I'm a linux user but since I do web developement having safari is essential for me. |

Same problem with Microsoft Applications after Security Update.

I did repair permission, logged in as another user and the problem still occurs. Put all of my home and system Preferences on the desktop and the problem still occurred. Removed all of my startup items and the problem with the Microsoft Application will crash when I try and print the document. Something buggy in the Security Update. I am having the same problem with Microsoft Applications such as when I try to print a Microsoft document. In addition, RDC (a free remote desktop from Microsoft) will not work. This happened after the security update. It mostly occuring with Microsoft Applications. I am using Tiger, 1GHz, powerbook with 1GByte of RAM on OSX 10.4.2. I have already posted on Apple site, but have not received any responds from them. If you are ambition, please go to my post and see if you can make anything out of it. http://discussions.info.apple.com/we...0296@.68b78a5c thx RLC |
Please post the full crash logs for those apps that have crashed. (On the Apple forums you only posted part of the crash logs.)
You can post them as attachments using the Manage Attachments button at the bottom when you reply. |
I am not able to find a button that said "Manage Attachments"

I looked for this using both Safari and Camino and I am not seeing the button. thx RLC |

Here you are and thanks for taking a look at these. They all crashed after the Security Update.

So I see in all three cases (the crash logs that you posted) that the crash is happening in the function "DoLineBreak' in Apple's text-handling code.
The only unusual thing I notice is that you have the "Saft" InputManager installed - this only shows up in the Excel crash log (which refers to "/Library/InputManagers/Saft/SaftLoader.bundle/Contents/MacOS/SaftLoader") You should try removing this InputManager (from the InputManagers folder under the top-level Library folder) |
I tried this and it didn't work.

I removed the InputManagers folder to the Desktop and Excel is still unable to print without crashing. Do you think that I will need to reinstall Microsoft Office? thx RLC |
Check if you have any plugins in the MS Office "Startup" folders.
And try logging in as a different user to see if the problem might be limited to your account. |
There are no plugins in my the Microsoft startup folder.
The only thing in my Microsoft Startup folders are other Folders, there are no files, hidden or otherwise.
I do notice one thing in my login item under Accounts. There is this item called Microsoft Database Daeman. I am surprised to see it here since I took out all the items from this location. It seems to conveniently find it way back the startup items. The main thing with the Microsoft Office products is that it will fail or crash when it is trying to make a connection to the network. thx RLC |

All Firewalls are off
All Firewalls are off. Other programs, such as mail, are communicating over the network without any problems.

Hey, could someone whose 10.3.9 Safari and Mail work fine send me their JavaScriptCore. There's a specific app at
/System/Library/Frameworks/Webkit.Framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/JavaScriptCore.framework/Versions/A/JavaScriptCore Anyone think this would work? I can't seem to compile my own... |
Would this also apply to RDC?

By the way, I note from re-reading your above posts that it seems like you might not have done a filesystem repair: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 You should definitely do this. And please post a new crash log file - now that you have removed all 3rd-party enhancements (e.g. Saft). |
Not able to do this because of Open Firmware Password
Thanks hayne for your help, I am not able to boot to single user mode or safe mode because I have this "Open Firmware Password" application installed on my system from Panther. When I upgraded to Tiger, I didn't take this into account.
So when I try to click on "Open Firmware Password" application, nothing happens, therefore, I am not able to disable it. I was told that there is a Tiger version available on the disk, but unfortunately I don't have the disk available to install it until this weekend. Is there a way I can get a Tiger Version of "Open Firmware Password"? Is there a way to disable the Panther version so that I can boot into safe mode? thx RLC |

Thanks, but I will have to wait until this weekend before I can update
hayne, thanks for all your help. Unfortunately, I will have to wait until I go home this weekend before I can try safe boot and fsck.

Same problem after safe boot, fsck, diskwarrier.

Hi hayne, I am home and ran more test, but the problem hasn't gone away.
Same print problem, if I open up Excel product and click print, the application will crash. The same thing is happening in Preview.app so it is not isolated to only Microsoft products. I performed safe boot, fsck, diskwarrier. The problem is still present. Here is the crash log, I hope this helps. thx RLC |

I reinstalled the security update and everything is ok now
I reinstalled the recent security update and everything is ok now.
I reinstalled the security update and everything is working now. I can now properly print from my applications that were having problems before and Finder works when I click on list view for a folder or file The file must have gotten corrupted during the software update. I would strongly recommend adding reinstalling the security update to the troubleshooting guide. thx RLC |
Could you link me to where I can download the security update please? (Or give me the name/version of it and i'll search apple's site myself)
|
Upate download page
It's on this page. It's a good page to mark as you can find all currently available Apple downloads on it.

Thanks! I downloaded and installed the 08/17/05 security update and the 08/29/05 safari update. I installed the security update then the safari update and everything worked :)
Thank you all for your help in solving my first mac related crisis, my dev computer is now working again without me having to go out and purchase anything. I am definatly going to pick up a copy of the OS 10.3 disks when they drop in a price a little more, just to have them on hand as you guys recommended. In the end I suspect it was simply a corrupted security update from the auto-downloader. |
