I love my new mighty mouse. I don't mind lifting my index finger to right click, as thats what I was doing on my The Mouse BT. I personally find the Apple mice fit my hands and that was the reason for me buying The Mouse BT.

When Apple brought this mouse out it was basically love at first sight. When I first started reading the page it was "o0o neat. so what does it do", read on a bit more, discovered the scrolling nub and it was "I need this". Now I've been using it for a little over 8 hours and I don't think I'll need another mouse for a couple of years.

What I like so much about the mouse is the side click is a little hard to activate sometimes, but most of the time my fingers are in the right positions, and being able to clear my desktop without having to reach up the top of the keyboard to F11 is a real timesaver. The other Brilliant feature of this mouse is the nub is so easy to use, and it feels so damn right. Yes its a small ball, yes it turns in any direction and yes its a little weird to feel under the finger-pad to start with, but once you get used to it, it friggin well blows you away!!

I am definitely not needing another mouse for 2+ years.. :D

I think this is a great thing, but it needs to be a part of the Mac desktop line. That way a new switcher's Mac can grow with them as there computer needs change.

I think potential switchers will find this mouse unintuitive.

If apple really wanted to lure potential switchers with this, they wouldn't have tried so hard to keep the one button style of it.

Most Windows users do not use the right mouse button.
Recall that almost by definition, the readers (and certainly the posters) of these forums are much more technically inclined than the vast majority of the population. (Most people don't ever consult online forums.)
Most users (Windows or Mac) are not all that concerned with operations-per-minute efficiency. Most non-power users use the menubar menus even for common operations like Copy & Paste instead of bothering to learn keyboard shortcuts.

Anyway, I think the main emphasis of this new mouse is on the scroll wheel. It provides right-click functionality as a nice extra for the relative few who will use it.

As always, good points, hayne.

It's an extra $50. If you buy a G5 tower, you need to buy a MM separate from the standard KB&M. They don't let you configure the G5 towers with a MM included for an extra $20 (as of a few days ago). They only let you do this with the Mac Mini for some reason.

Went to check it out today at the Apple store, and did not like it a bit. Scrolling thingy is not good at all, to me it was absolutely inferior to every middle quality two buttons mouse I have come across.

Will stick to my single button, got no problems with it, would probably replace it even if it came with a new machine.

picking back up on the mice ... :)

i am thinking about replacing my old Microsoft Intellimouse Optical with either the Mighty Mouse or the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer. I haven't tried the Mighty Mouse yet, but a lab-mate has the Intellimouse Explorer, and it feels mighty yummie to my hand. I like how it has the 'tilt wheel' techonology for side-to-side scrolling. The only thing I didn't like about it was that vertical wheel scrolling seemed a bit slow compared to my Intellimouse Optical (perhaps I should increase the scroll rate? or is this related to the increased resistance of the Intellimouse Explorer vs. Optical?).

I don't think I can go wireless or bluetooth -- I'd really like the convenience, but I think the decreased tracking speed would drive me crazy when working on things that require precise mouse tracking.

Anyone have any thoughts about the MS Intellimouse Explorer? OS X compatibility? Drivers to enable fun things for the extra buttons?

I was just about to post back here...i ordered a Logitech MX 500 off of Amazon (for $26 shipped) the day after i bought my Mighty Mouse and subsequently returned it.

The MX 500 arrived today, and i couldn't be more pleased. It is slightly heavier than the MM, which i like, it conforms to my hand better, has more buttons, better tracking, standard right and left clicking behavior, and it matches my TiBook wonderfully!

I suggest getting USB Overdrive for your intellimouse...it's great software.

TRAITOR!!!

You know Logitech has made every Apple mouse until the MM, right?

vancenase 08-08-2005 07:54 PM

hmmmm ... 65 minutes until Best Buy closes (i think) ... :)

pantherman13 08-08-2005 08:38 PM

Yes. Whats your point? It's not Apple.

MBHockey 08-08-2005 08:45 PM

If you are talking to me, i believe my point is fairly obvious. ;)

pantherman13 08-08-2005 10:45 PM

Okay. And I said that your MX 500 is not an Apple brand mouse, so I don't care. If I have to go out of Apple for better products, then I will, because in rare cases, other companies do make products better than Apple, but to quote Homer Simpson, "Why eat Bacon when you can have Steak?" :D :p

so i bought the MS Intellimouse Explorer, and there are +'s and -'s vs. my old MS Intellimouse Optical. it's supposed to be 'ergnomical' -- slight slanted to the right. the way i normally hold my mouse + this slant = many incidental right clicks.

a big minus: the middle button (wheel click) is not as easy to click as my other mouse. this is extremely important to me. when i tested the MX 500, it had a good middle button click. and, for that matter, the MS Intellimouse Explorer had a decent middle click (probably a result of 1,000,000 people testing it out).

i'm wondering if i should take it back and give the MX 500 a try :)
