It doesn't have "touch sensitive buttons" - it has touch sensitive areas that determine which area was pressed. I.e. it is like the existing one-button mouse where the "button" is the whole surface of the mouse. You press down on the surface and the touch sensitive areas figure out whether you pressed on the left or right side.

I read the Apple pages also, but that wasn't too clear.

"Touch-sensitive technology under Mighty Mouse’s seamless top shell detect where you’re clicking" seems to indicate that the body doesn't move at all. Like the buttons on an iPod. Even in the tech specs, "full-body button with touch-sensitive technology beneath for left-, right- and Scroll Ball clicking" isn't explicit.

I've read a bunch of comments on this mouse already, and this is the second most asked question so far. The first is "OMGWTFBBQ it's not BT?"

It's the SAME mechanical click as the one button mouse...it's really cool...it knows though...which side you've actually clicked.

the scroll button is really cool...you can scroll it like a scroll wheel or simply push it up and hold it to scroll...the 360 scroll is really cool

Apple did it again. i must say.

what if you just barely tap on the right (or left) side? a tap that could be confused for a click, but for a normal 2/3 button mouse, would not engage as an actual mouse click because not enough force is applied? does it pick that up? how sensitive is it?

snowjay 08-02-2005 01:16 PM

Now only if they can come up with a mechanism to right click on a PowerBook I'd be happy! Even after a few weeks I still have to think about holding down the Ctrl key before clicking.

MBHockey 08-02-2005 01:19 PM

It's not that sensitive where it would confuse that for a click.

The only annoying thing i've come across is that if you want to right click...you have to remove your left finger from the area of the mosue that is sensitive to that click..so you have to raise it..or move it over.

OYE -- maybe I won't be buying one :(

It sounds like you haven't used the existing one-button mouse that comes standard with new Macs. You need to press down on the mouse surface hard enough to activate the mechanical switch. The touch-sensitive stuff is merely for determining where you pressed.

Install iScroll and you can get a right-click menu if you hit the PowerBook button with two fingers on the trackpad. iScroll does other cool things, if you have a pre-2005 PowerBook.

I found then when I went looking, but my PowerBook is a 2005 model, not even a month old yet.

i've used the one-button mouse a few times, and my words were poorly phrased above -- but, my question was answered: the Mighty Mouse is not over-sensitive in determing where one presses on the mouse.

I think I like the scroll idea. I don't find the MS mice's left-right scrolling to be very useful (it's just a toggle for left/right, not a wheel movement). No BT is disappointing though.

I wonder how long until someone writes a gesture-driver for the scroll pad? Quick left swipe for back in a browser, quick down swipe to close a window, etc.

MBHockey 08-02-2005 01:59 PM

The mouse is good...now that i've had it a while...but it seems less like a two button mouse and more like a one button modified mouse.

click with left finger --> left click
click with both finger --> left click
click with right finger, while left finger remains on top shell --> left click
raise left finger, click with right finger --> right click

I really do like it..the full mouse button for left click thingy..feels more mac like to me...my left finger naturally raises a little when i right click..so it's really not hard to get used to at all.

I LOVE the scroll button..it's awesome..and the side buttons activate dashboard which is really cool.

Definitely a keeper.

What about the sounds that it makes? Apple says that it makes virtual scrolling and clicking sounds with an internal speaker? Does it still makes the normal click on the down and up like the "old" ones do? If so, when does it make the "virtual" sounds?

MBHockey 08-02-2005 03:25 PM

the scroll nub makes a noise when you use it, as do the side buttons. the left and right click noise is just the mechanical noise of the mouse clicking

zeb 08-02-2005 03:49 PM

Is it annoying? Can it be turned off?

MBHockey 08-02-2005 03:52 PM

I don't think it can be turned off...it's not annoying. You only hear it if it is very quiet in the room. Similar to the iPod clicking noise, but much softer.

FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'M SO HAPPY I JUST CRAPPED MY PANTS.

MBHockey 08-02-2005 04:38 PM

i think i am going to return it, sadly. :(

Although it's not _that_ annoying to lift my finger to right click, it is certainly an extra effort, and it's beginning to get on my nerves.

For the life of me i cannot figure out why they didn't just make it pressure sensitive.

That's weird, with every two button mouse I lift my finger to the right button…I only use one finger to click and scroll anyway so I don't see it as a problem.
What's so annoying about it? Too much strain?

From what i've read this mouse will soon be mine!
