Enabling Bluetooth for iSync on the Verizon/Motorola E815 phone

Verizon does not enable bluetooth for syncing or browsing on the new Motorola E815 cellphone. Here is how to hack the settings in the phone. Lots of thanks to SClark1000 and this HowardForums thread .

First and foremost, this is not for the novice. What you do here may have side effects such as an inoperable phone and/or void of warranty. Use at your own risk.

What you will need:
1) A PC running Windows-XP SP2 with a USB port.
2) The Motorola USB cable (either SKN6311A or AAKN4011A).
3) Software
a) The Motorola Phone Settings tool.
b) The E815 profile to use with the PST.
c) The USB Drivers for the E815.

Step by step [all work done on the PC]
1) Download and expand all three zip files into a known place.
2) Install PST
3) Plug the Moto USB cable into the PC
4) Plug the phone into the cable. At this point the system should tell you that it has discovered new hardware and ask for drivers. When asked use the advanced option and browse to the MotoConnect folder in the unzipped Motorola folder from E815Drivers.zip file(s).
5) Launch PST, and then the p2kseem.exe in from the expanded SDModifiedP2K.zip file(s). Wait until the bottom left status goes to "connected".

You are now ready to backup and then edit.
1) BACKUP the existing settings :)
a) Change the value in Load/Seem to 2742 Leave all else alone.
b) Click "Load from phone"
c) Click "Save to file"
d) Name it "Backup" <- This is what you will need to restore
2) Now for the hack
a) Go to line 60 and then select right until the window "Selected byte details - "Offset" says 6a.
SET (check) bits 0,1,3,5,6,7
b)Go to line 70 and then select right until the window "Selected byte details - "Offset" says 75.
SET (check) bits 0,2,5
c) Click "Save to phone"
d) Wait a second or two
e) Click "Restart phone"

THAT EASY! {It was harder digging through the Windows stuff than it was to actually do the mod}

Quit applications - Unplug the phone - Go back to the Mac.

Remember to delete the USB E815 USB from iSync. You can't use both USB and Bluetooth to sync.

Once "paired" you can launch "Bluetooth File Exchange" in the Utilities folder and browse/upload/download files.

Someone just reminded me of a "gotcha". PST will not unzip on the PC . I unzipped it with Stuffit Deluxe on my Mac :-) and then networked it over to the PC.

EvanDT 07-14-2005 05:55 PM

After a few minutes ended up doing that myself,
everything else seems to be working fine, had to give the laptop back to my sister, will make the edit this evening.

Adding some more info

This appeared in another thread, but should also be shown here ...

Quote:

What I had a problem with (so stupido!) is that I didn't enable the Bluetooth prefs pane on the Mac side (allow file exchange...). So make sure, under the SystemPrefs/Bluetooth/Sharing tab, you enable the boxes (I also checked off Paired Security) Once I did that, I was able to add the E815 to iSync. And sync it did! - from imagework

jsurpless25 08-14-2005 09:32 PM

Why would I be able to connect with the MotoTools but not with the P2K? I've tried re-installing the drivers and nothing seems to work... I load the P2K and it just sits there with the hourglass until I move the mouse...

MBHockey 08-21-2005 08:44 PM

Just got my e815. I'd like to get OBEX working, but syncing with iSync worked fine (calendars). Is the only way to get OBEX working to use the seem hack? I have everything but the USB cable, but i don't want to buy it if i don't have to..

thanks

CPYCGerry 08-21-2005 09:34 PM

Seem hack needed

MBHockey - The only way to get OBEX working is to do the SEEM hack. And you also get the Dial Up Networking and the microSD (TransFlash) transfer as a plus. It's worth it.

nickyct 08-25-2005 09:18 PM

I did exactly following the step above but my PC still don't detect my phone.
I'm pretty new to the new tooth stuff. I bought the dongle and installed on my PC with the driver that came with it. When I turn on my blue tooth head set it dectected it.

After the hacking it should detect my phone automatically right ?
Or do I have to pair it with the PC first.

On Motorola mobile phone tools When I set my modem to blue tooth the Multi media icon/menu shows up but it grey out since I have no connection between the phone and the PC. But I switch it back to USB/motorola modem the icon disappear. Why is that ?
Is there a way that I can make the icon stays if I want to use the cable to do the multi media ?

Any instruction and detail would be greatly appreciated.
and last but not least. Will I see any diferent in screen menu on my phone after hacked. I don't really see the different at all.

PST Link doesn't work

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for posting these directions all in one place. I'm waiting to receive my new e815 and I've been trying to figure out how to enable all the features once it gets here. Searching all these different forums gets kind of confusing!

I tried to download PST from the link you gave but the link no longer works. If you or anyone else could point me to the file, or if it's small enough to be emailed, it would be greatly appreciated.

One more question, and it probably doesn't belong here, but once I've gotten the hack completed, is there a way to make custom ringtones without having to email them to yourself. With my current LG VX7000, I use BitPim and it works like a champ. However, from what I can tell BitPim doesn't work with Motorola phones and I can't seem to find a comparable program.

Thanks in advance for all the help!
Dan

Hi Gerry,

First let me thank you for the great work. :)

I have recently acquired the E815 phone from Verizon retail store. I have been looking for a way to easily sync the phone book. Now I run into this forum. Great. I am going to do it soon. But, the first link in your post for the software from motorola (file pst_723.zip) appears to be invalid. I have clicked it several times and the dreaded 'can find the page' message comes up. Can you suggest a solution? Thanks.

jtjtj 09-05-2005 11:47 PM

Everything was hacked correctly, but my Mac is not detecting the phone.

Is there anything else I have to do? I hacked the 2742 file, saved everything to my phone, restarted, and no luck.

thejokell 09-08-2005 12:25 PM

I have a different issue - I can get the phone to connect to the PC just fine, however the PST never seems to load anything from the phone. It is always blank. Anyone experienced that???

rwaldin 09-21-2005 06:12 PM

thejokell: I don't know if this is the same behavior, but everything works as described until I tell P2KSeem to load 90 bytes of seem 2742 and it eventually returns but there is no data on the page. Has anyone been able to get around this problem?

jjluv 10-22-2005 02:50 AM

I am having the same problem. Did you ever find a solution to this problem?

Thanks...

CAlvarez 11-30-2005 10:35 PM

Haha, that's funny, I never saw this before. Instead of all that, do this.

1. Dial ##dialup on the handset.
2. Have a beer while it syncs.

CAlvarez 12-01-2005 09:10 AM

BTW, I should have noted... The lengthy first post is what Windows users have to do. Mac users don't need all that.

I very literally got it started doing a sync and internet dialup in my car with the PowerBook when I picked up the phone.

paultimore 12-08-2005 04:27 PM

The Motorola Phone Settings tool link

I am trying the link for the The Motorola Phone Settings tool and it is asking for a login and password. Does anyone have it? Or can you offer a tip to get the file someplace else
thanks

rino9 12-13-2005 01:28 PM

I get the same box with a login /password? Help please?

paultimore 12-14-2005 10:05 AM

If you google search PST_7.2.3_GENERAL.rar you should get what you need. I had to decompress it using a PC though for some reason stuffit got confused with the .rar format.
www.howardforums.com/archive/topic/674803-4.html Talks about this problem.

Also I am having a hard time with Bluetooth File Exchange after doing this seem edit. I keep losing the connection. For example, sometimes I can see the picture folder but cant get in, or I start sending a picture and it will stop giving me a file transfer error OR sometimes it loses the bond completely and I have to go through the Bluetooth setup assistant process again. Another odd thing is that on my G5 at work isync works fine but on my G4 it wont. I can't tell if its the Mac, the phone or the bluetooth card. Any thoughts?
thanks

shaznyc 01-08-2006 10:28 PM

Were you able to transfer files (audio, pix) Mac to phone.

That great CALvarez, and were you able to transfer files (audio, pix) Mac to phone.
I am able to isync with Address Book & iCal, even the dial up works through Bluetooth to Mac. But I still can not send files.

I have been using a TransFlach, but will like to use Bluetooth to transfer files, since I paid for the thing.
Has anyone found a link for the Motorola Phone Setting Tool yet. I have been looking on my end, but luck.

CAlvarez 01-09-2006 12:24 AM

Verizon cripples the OBEX profile, so you can't transfer files without paying for their file transfer services. That's only one of many anti-consumer things that Verizon is known for.

MBHockey 01-09-2006 12:54 AM

I bought a cable off ebay to hook up to my PC so i could do a seem hack on my phone to enable OBEX.

However, i couldn't, after about 4 hours, get the PC to recognize the phone and install it correctly. Grrr Windows...

tarlint 01-16-2006 10:43 PM

after hack, isync doesn't work with bluetooth

Hi everyone, I'm not a newbie, in fact, I've hacked my phone multiple times...but I have one stinkin' problem. I cannot isync now that I've hacked my phone. I cannot isync over bluetooth. I've went back to the original seem. I've altered the original seem. I really need to be able to sync the contacts and adresses. It worked before the hack, now after, with obex and everything enabled, it tells me that the device cannot be found. Anyone help? or can anyone email me thier seem that isyncs correctly so I can try? Thanks.

I've been doing a lot of reading on this...it seems you have to remove the phone from iSync and un-pair it, then re-pair it via bluetooth again. Apparently the hack changes some information that iSync uses to recognize the phone.

dls555 02-14-2006 10:25 AM

iSync failure following seem edit

i've got the same problem. While OBEX now works after the E815 seem edit, I cannot get iSync to synch calendar and contacts. iSync recognizes the phone OK, but I get an error dialog when the synch fails (can't attach dialog image here--new forum member??). I'm using iSync 2.1.1 (OSX 10.4.4) and have removed the old, pre-seem-edit device in iSync and re-paired the phone. In fact, I've repeated removed the phone in iSync and re-paired, to no avail.

MBHockey 03-28-2006 10:54 AM

Hi all, I finally got obex working (Thanks Gerry!), but also experience the problem with iSync failing to recognize the phone then. Has anyone come up with a solution?

What i've tried is what was suggested earlier -- removing and re-pairing the device with my computer.

CAlvarez 03-28-2006 11:23 AM

Sorry, I don't have any good troubleshooting tips. I can tell you I've tried a couple of E815s and they worked fine from the start. So maybe deleting the pairing then doing a full factory reset on the phone is something to try? Here's the way I've done it with three phones, all worked.

Brand new phone, give it a full charge.

Turn on and dial ##dialup.

Start a pairing from the PowerBook, answer yes to options to use it for internet access and to sync.

Run a sync.

Simple as that. Maybe the hack given at the beginning of this thread makes it worse. I've done this a couple of other times at the Verizon store to show them how it is done (the manager was very interested since he has to turn away Mac users for the data cards, since they don't officially support Macs).

MBHockey 03-28-2006 12:12 PM

Wait, but doesn't that only enable dial-up networking...not OBEX?

MBHockey 03-28-2006 04:42 PM

Success!

I did some digging, and it seems the seem edit originally posted in the beginning of this thread is not enough to enable both obex and isync syncing over Bluetooth, in fact, all of those 2742 seem edits break iSync compatibility, and I've only come across one solution to this point.

This is what i just did and have both working over Bluetooth:

1) Removed any trace of my e815 on my Mac. Removed it from bluetooth preferences and iSync device list.

2) Restored phone to stock configuration (with my backup seem) and by disabling dial-up networking (##DIALUP)

3) Downloaded and applied v2 of the seem edit atop this page:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...53#post5427653
named: 2742_0001_MOT-E815_v2.seem

4) Restarted my phone

5) Downloaded and applied v2 of the seem on this page: http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...8&page=7&pp=14
named: 2742_0001_obex_isync_v2.zip
This file is linked in the last post of linked page

6) Restarted my phone again

7) Paired my phone with my Mac

8) Done...my phone now works with Bluetooth File Exchange sending files back and forth and also syncs wirelessly with iSync

Reminder: This could seriously hose your phone. Make backups before you do any seem editing. Follow the directions on the linked pages closely, as they have more information than is listed here

Take that Verizon Wireless! :p

*Please note: A side effect of these two seem edits is they will make it so your No.1 Speed Dial number will call your voicemail instead of whoever you've programmed it to be. I prefer this behavior over dialing *86, and just moved my No.1 Speed dial to No.2 speed dial

All editing was done with the software mentioned in the first post of this thread. All three pieces of those software are necessary, and even though Gerry lists XP SP2 as a requirement, i did all my modifications on a PC running XP SP1 (although, when installing PST, it included 2-3 patches for XP before finishing up -- i'm assuming those are the only ones PST actually needs from SP2 to work)

CAlvarez 03-28-2006 07:54 PM

Quote:

Probably, but those are exactly the steps I took and it worked.

MBHockey 03-28-2006 08:01 PM

So you're transferring files over bluetooth and using iSync over bluetooth with having done no seem edits?

CAlvarez 03-28-2006 08:44 PM

I used iSync, I don't recall whether I tried file transfers. I used iSync and dialup after following exactly the steps I noted above.

MBHockey 03-29-2006 01:20 PM

That was never an issue. iSync should work out of the box (on Tiger, that is), and dial-up networking works after simply entering ##DIALUP on the keypad.

The problem here was that OBEX over bluetooth comes disabled on the e815 by default, even though Verizon advertises it all over the place for this phone.

To get OBEX over bluetooth working, which is what Gerry had put together in his initial post, had worked, except a not-so-desired side effect of his seem edit is that it broke the out-of-the-box iSync compatibility.

The two seem edits i came across, when used together, have the effect of enabling OBEX over Bluetooth while retaining compatibility with iSync (also, over BT).

For me, i just wanted to get everything out of the phone that Verizon promised in the first place, but crippled.

Gumbyboy15 05-12-2006 12:01 PM

May I ask for a summary? If one wants ALL of the features ot work on the e815 and the Mac, i.e. OBEX file transfer, dial-up, bluetooth i-Sync, I need to run BOTH seem edits? I followed the first, just not sure about the second one that was mentioned.

Nothing available running on the mac other than Virtual PC or similar apps?

Thanks!

Gumbyboy15 05-12-2006 12:32 PM

I liked the iSync capability with iCal and Address Book right out of the box, but the lack of being able to connect and use my ringtones and pictures is something I didn't realize would be such a pain. I guess that's more an issue with Verizon than the mac or motorola.

afranke 07-21-2006 09:41 AM

The initial post says to used cable part number SKN6311A. I have SKN6311B and can't get it to work, could that be the problem?

MBHockey 07-21-2006 11:30 AM

afranke, maybe...but you should google around a bit more. I'm certainly not an expert at this stuff.

Gumbyboy, yes, you need to do both seem edits on top of one another.

I've looked around and haven't found anything. The instructions on this page say you might have a problem with anything but the A part number. Any idea what the difference between A and B is? I can't see anything.

plbogart 08-01-2006 01:25 AM

Don't know if this will help but without Bluetooth on my old G4 running 10.4.7, I tried Syncing my hacked E815 (enabled multimedia to make it an E815M) and with iSync (and a Motorola USB cable), it would recognize it but error out telling me to check the cable, etc... Just for the heck of it I dialed ##DIALUP and DISABLED DIALUP. I then restarted iSync and reconnected the phone. Worked like a charm. I only synced my Address Book as I really don't have anything else I need but at least it worked. Hope this helps someone.

Bluetooth transfers for LG9800

A little off subject as well, but I recently figured out how to send/receive files (pictures, videos, ringtones, etc.) to my LG VX9800.

Through bluetooth pairing between my phone and Macbook Pro, a sound editing program called Audacity, and a transfer program called BitPim, I am able to take any clip of any song out of my 3,000+ in itunes and make it a ringtone.
I also can record my own sounds and make them ringtones as well. If anyone is interested in the minor details of the steps to take, email me.

changes to ##dialup??

I dialed it and it said the number was disconnected??
