Your file installs for me, must be something else happening on your system, or that same driver is already installed on your system. Try removing the reciept pkg file (from the /Library/Reciepts folder) and give that installer another try. The one you have is from Dec 2004. There appears to be a newer installer, available for shipping charge from HP, have you tried that one?

Install HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OSX
wow its working, good call DeltaMac. I havent tried the HP CD, but after all this I wouldnt give them another dime.
Heres a recap for everyone to Install HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OSX. 1) Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version) 2) If you have anything for the HP 1020 in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it. 3) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility" 4) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD Then you should be able to print.. glad we finally got around this one.. and one big FU to HP. |
I could not agree more with what appears to the right of the two dots on the last line.
I took mine back yesterday and got a Brother 2040 for about the same price and with better resolution and memory size. But had I seen this option, I would have tried it. I am half tempted to get the 1020 again, as I liked it. But if I can't get it to work, then I deserve flogging. <edit> Actually, I just now downloaded what you have and it is identical to what I found on the HP ftp site (I went scrounging, there is no link but they still have it there.) I also can verify that it installed every file that appears there. I did this on 4 computers with no success. All are 10.4.6. |

Sorry, didn't read this until just now. I'm going to compare the two sets of files and see what has changed. <edit> Everything has changed according to diff. The files have the same names. But their content differs. So they replaced one that worked with one that didn't, and then hid the one that didn't work. (I don't blame them for hiding the one that doesn't work, but WTF?). |

For some very sick reason, I am tempted to go buy the printer again.
Makes me think of the famous Presidential quote: "There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." |
It looks like the "new" version of the installer installs universal binaries, so what could have happened was that the decision wasn't so much to maliciously prevent 1020 users from using the 1022 driver but rather laziness in not bothering to update or include the files for the 1020. That sort of thing goes with the territory of using an unsupported driver, I suppose. No reason why they couldn't have left the old installer on the site though, apart from maybe the potential for confusion with having different versions, and the whole CD thing seems a bit odd.
The "universal" vs. "PPC only" difference makes it hard to compare differences within files, but one conspicuous difference is in the contents of the "hplj1020PM.plugin: fpc's link /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1020.img /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1022.img /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1022n.img wgscott's ftp link /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1022.img /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1022n.img The above is just an observation - I don't have an hp printer so I can't confirm if this means anything. I think people would be better off avoiding the 1020 - it isn't supported so who knows what will happen for example when "Leopard" comes out. If you like hp, spring for the 1022 which is supported, or else do as voldenuit suggested earlier and buy from someone else with better Mac support. |
Wow, the 1022 driver does work on my 1020.
Amazing.. I was just about to return my printer, lol No problem with the printing, but Can anybody let me know how to set the 'double-side print', like it does on windows xp. Thanks in advance |

or use the 1022 driver that come with CD. |
Finally my first post in this forum after having watched the discussions here for some time.
First, my apology for owning an HP 1020 is that I bought it as a Win XP printer where it does a great job. Now, I have completely switched to a MacBookPro (10.4.6) and am desparately trying to get the 1020 working. I have tried the new HP website driver version (successfully installs, but I cannot select the driver when adding the 1020 in the printer setup) as well as the new version (where it tells me "there's nothing to install" even though I made sure that library and PSU are free of any HP files). My questions are hence as follows: 1) Does someone know the trick to get this old driver up and running? Where could be my mistake? 2) Does the old version support any Intel Macs? 3) Isn't there a star out there that could alter the new HP website version to include the 1020? 4) Or will I need to buy a new printer...? Many thanks for any help from Germany! |

Hope I backed up that older dmg to enough drives to last the lifetime of this printer. :)
New question though. Suppose I want the printer hooked physically to a PC and share it to the macs. I'm not seeing the printer after navigating to the PC. The other PC's see it, but not the 10.3.9 mac. Any thoughts? |
I also want to thank the group (and DeltaMac) for saving my $100. The old drivers work GREAT. II don't find this kind of help on the Windoze help boards. Thanks again.

hi guys i'm new both here and as a mac user i used to connect my hp 1020 with my XP notebook and it works great while recently i bought a macbook and seems that i have no luck in connecting the printer to it i've tried both the old and new driver while the new driver can be successfully installed, the model no. didnt come up when u try to add it as an new printer, as a result when u press "print' nothing happens for the old driver it can not be installed (just like some of the user's mentioned above that "nothing can be installed") so imo i think the old driver do include the 1020 part, and its for PPC, while the new driver is universal binary though HP took out the part for 1020... hai~~~does anyone know any other drivers which can work on intel mac? |
doesn't work for me..
I have read through the above and followed step by step, but when i get to the 'choose printer' part, my HP1020 does not appear in the list. Any idea what i am doing wrong??
Thanks in advance. |
doesn't work for me..
BTW, i forgot to tell you all that i am using OS X, trying to connect to a networked printer (HP 1020 & Canon 6100) connected to a windows XP system. I cant get either of them to work. Sigh.....
I am at work now, can't print, so thinking about just going home.. |
Sort of working now
Hi,
I managed to get my canon i6100 up and running by doing an Advanced setup Windows over SAMBA smb://user@WORKGROUP/SERVER/printer I just need to get this HP1020 working or at least showing up in my printer list. So any help in posting a link to the old driver that works would be just great. I am also having the problem where it says "nothing to install". I have also taken your advice and removed all traces of the HP1020 in the receipts file. Puzzled. |
