Macbook
I have to do the file moving. I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.10 Spanish version and the printer is latinoamerican version of the Laser Jet 1022 (
1) Disconnect the HP 1020 if it is currently connected to the MacBook. 2 Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version) 2) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility" 3) If you have anything for the HP 1020 (or the 1022 from a failed installation) in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it. 4) Remove the 1020Series folder from "/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet" directory if it exists. 5) Reset the print system from the Printer Setup Utility 6) Reboot (the HP 1020 is still disconnected from the MacBook) 7) Run the installer package downloaded in step 2 8) Shut down the MacBook completely 9) Power on the MacBook 10) Move the files from "/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series" to "/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet" 11) Reset the print system from the Printer Setup Utility 12) Shut down the MacBook completely 13) While the MacBook is off, connect the HP 1020 and power the PRINTER on. 14) Power on the MacBook Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD |

Leopard 10.5.1?
What sort of differences are there to do this under OSX 10.5? There's no Printer Setup Utility; I followed the instrux as best I could but saw no HP 102x driver.
|
Well, firstly thanks to everyone for all the tips... and yes both reps at Staples said "of course the 1020 is mac compatible - they all are these days"!.
At any rate, followed the instructions, have it working with the old 1022 dmg, however would really like to get the extra options that csmoll (post #189) mentioned working. Only problem is I can't seem to find the Archive.pax.gz file. Has anyone else managed to get all the extra features working? I'm running a 1.25 Ghz Power PC G4 with Leopard (10.5.1). Thanks! |
How do I print double sided and with multiple slides/pages per page on the 1020?
Hey all,
I was fortunate to set up my HP laserjet 1020 on my MAC OSX 10.5, by following the guides and installing the old software for the 1022, but I how can I print double sided and with multiple slides per page? Am I not able to do this because the 1020 isn't supported by MAC OSX in the first place? Any ideas as to how I can print double sided and with multiple slides per page? Thanks much! |
all: please open a bug report at http://bugreport.apple.com requesting official support of this printer in OSX. post here the results if any.
|
It's not up to Apple to provide support.
Complain to HP... they make the printer. |

http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/ for them to also include the foo2zjs open source driver just makes plain sense, especially since HP seems to be ignoring mac support for this popular printer: http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ |
Apple provides a service including many of the most popular printer drivers with their OS. This assures that Apple has tested the drivers and found them acceptable. Gutenprint is also a tried and tested package in OS X and can be relied upon to work as expected. Apple doesn't do this because they have to, but to make a more reliable experience for the consumer. If a printer manufacturer doesn't make their drivers available to Apple to test, one cannot expect Apple to supply it in the package. One also cannot expect Apple to supply a third party package that requires someone else's (not fully tested) rewrite of any package already included and tested in OS X.

Help with HP laserjet 1020 printer
From what I understand if you download software for hp 1022 it should recognize 1020 printer. But that is exactly what I did and still does not work.
I went on hp website, downloaded HP 1022 software, it downloaded it find to my desk top and then I installed it, but when I go to print option and select this printer, it asks me to Name, location and print using. When I go to print using the hp printer is not available for me to select and add?? What do I do, please help. |
I followed this thread to 2006 - replaced my 1020 with P1006
Oh do I wish I found this place before I boxed up my 1020 and bought a new P1006 which is "supposed" to be Mac OS X compatible.
I am tempted to un-box the LJ 1020 and follow this thread's instructions and see if I can get connectivity with both Win and Mac at the same time. My only problem (please someone fill in the blanks here if you know) is why the list of printers that shows is different when adding a printer via Windows Printing in network neighborhood (workgroup) vs USB/base stationUSB port? I spend 2.5 hours, yes 2 1/2 hours on the phone with Apple before another 1 Hour with HP regarding Any solution allowing Printing to the HP P1006 (same guts as the 1020, different color, both host based) OK, I was saying, allowing printing to this P1006 new model whether it's to Windows XP as a shared printer, the apple extreme base station (gigabit ver with USB port) and have Windows Printing working, or any combination that DOES NOT require my Macbook Pro to have the USB port plugged into the HP. This question is going to apply to my LaserJet 1020 as well because the same problem is likely to occur if trying to get Tiger to print to it while shared from the XP machine. When "more printers" is clicked, there is no printer drive even close this laserjet model, though when adding it while it's connected to the base station extreme, suddenly it's automatically detected and the correct driver (installed from the included cd) auto detects as well and everything works perfecto. After the 3.5 hours total phone support between HP & Apple, neither would claim any full support compliance for anything but a direct USB connection into the mac. The support stops there. Furthermore, my successful printing connection to this new P1006 via the Airport Extreme using Bonjour in Mac was NOT supported by HP and is not supposed to work and I was advised by the tech support agent that it is subject to stop working at any given time and don't call back to ask why. All in all, the question that I have that's is generic and perhaps can get answered before I un-box this 1020 is about the Mac Driver database. I read something in this thread about network shared printers wanting to only come up as PCL 5 compatible when connecting to a shared windows printer. Not sure if that's true? Then is a Zenographics Mono SDK driver posted, but that link is dead. Anyone have an updated link or care to e-mail it to me? my e-mail is smz (at) inbox.com Of course this doesn't make a lot of sense when still using the network, everything is peachy with printing through the extreme base station. Someone help me out here? I've been told you cannot manually add a device driver like you can in windows like using the .inf file. Is that true? Apple told me that a .plugin file does the same thing as .inf and HP told me that was completely false. When I attempted to point to the .plugin file for the HP, they were grayed out. OK, I've had quite a long post here and perhaps confused a few people. But I do have both the HP Laserjet P1006 & 1020 both host based and P1006 officially supported under Mac and we know the 1020 story. If I could get the 1020 back on my network, shared off the windows xp machine and a successful connection from my Macbook Pro, i would be a very happy camper. Already downloaded the "old" LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg driver that will install a 1020 laserjet using unmodified 1022 drivers to the mac. On a side note, I got an incredible deal on this new replacement for the 1000 series Laserjets from newegg.com. If you are not in the USA, this might not be of any value. But MSRP is $179, it was discounted to $99 no rebate and then a promo code they were giving out took another $40 instantly off the price. I bought this last week as was overwhelmed at the fact I just got a brand new HP mac compatible LJ for $59.99 shipped to my door. It sported free shipping in addition to that $40 instant discount. Bought a 3 year extended warranty for it and my total cost was around $65. Anyone interested, I can check if that special is still good and e-mail you the info or copy of my receipt for proof. Take it easy, I hope someone out here has had success in sharing the 1020 from XP and getting the Mac to print effectively to it. Otherwise, it's back to the base station and the P1006. Anyone want to buy a perfect condition 1020 with maybe 100 printers on the toner? LOL SMZ |

I don't know if this has already been said, but to install the older drivers, the newer ones need to be deleted if they've been installed. To see what was installed and where, select "Show Files" from the File menu in the Apple Installer. |
HP 1020 vs 1022 Drivers
I've used a 1020 for years with the 1022 driver. Continued to work when I upgraded to Leopard. But last month I had a client who switched and moved to a brand-new iMac running 10.5.2 and I UTTERLY COULD NOT GET THAT PRINTER TO WORK with the 1022 driver. After an hour, I just 'Jeezus' I could BUY a new cheap B&W laser for what it'd cost to pay me to try to solve this!'
HP now sells a dirt cheap (often on sale for $99) revamped laser that looks just like the 102X series (the 1060 or 1016 I think) that IS supported on the Mac. (Hrmmm.. Wonder if _that newer driver_ might help a 1020 under Leopard?) |
I tried about 3 ways, but found this to work for me. First, delete any of the files you may have downloaded. I just used the finder, and moved the items to the trash. [ from the receipts folder and from the printer folder]. Then, I restarted the computer. Then, I downloaded the driver, (identified in "christefano's" post 5-24-08). Then, I used the "Print Fax" utility in the System Preferences menu. The driver appeared, it shows up as the "HP_LaserJet_1020-1" in Queue Name, and "1.0.1201" in the Driver Version when you click on the printer info. I have printed an e-mail so far. But that is far more than I could do 20 minutes ago!
