HP Laserjet 1020 driver for OSX
Would anyone know where I could find a printer driver for my HP Laserjet 1020 under Mac OS 10.3?
Many thanks for your help. Daniel |
Apparently there are no Mac OS X ppds for it.
You'll have to try the generic ppd. |
I'd try the HP Laserjet 5 Series, Gimp-Print, driver (built-in on Panther & Tiger).
(The generic ppd is for postscript printers) |
HP laserjet 1020
Hello,
I would like to apply a generic or GIMP PPD to use my HP laserjet 1020, which I've bought in error, but when i use Add Printer in the Printer Utility and choose USB printer, i am unable to do any more than watch the Utility try to find a driver and fail. What can I do to force the OS to use a different PPD? Thanks in advance. doug |
HP LaserJet 1020
Has anyone been able to get an HP LaserJet 1020 to print from 10.4.1?
I've connected it using a USB 2.0 cable and used the HP LaserJet 5 Gimp driver. When I click print, it goes through and the print center says the document prints successfully, but the green light on the printer doesn't even blink. The gentleman at Staples (why didn't I go to the Apple Store?) said this would work with my Mac (again, why didn't I go to the Apple Store?) and now I'm a bit frustrated. Can anyone shine some light for me? Thanks a lot, Gabriel |
If the guy at Staples gave you bad information, you can probably scream bloody murder to the manager and get them to take the item back.
|
I usually recommend reading the system requirements on the outside of the box. If it doesn't mention the Mac, then look for a different printer. There's some exceptions to that, but the low end printers usually are not Postscript, and some rely on Windows software to work, and not just the drivers.
|
Yeah, checking the box isn't always the tell all, though. Guess I'll be going back to Staples.
Thanks anyway guys. g. |
I downloaded the 1022 driver from HP today. During the install it said it was for the 1020 series. The device scan recognized the driver and I successfully printed a few pages of varing complexity. I'm left wondering why HP's 1020 pages don't lead to the same driver. Here's hoping nothing crops up down the road.

Thank you, you are glorious. g. |
I can definitely confirm that there is an HP driver for the 1020. Hp doesn't include it in the box and it's not on HP's website under Support and Drivers if you choose the 1020. HOWEVER if you choose the 1022 printer you'll see Mac drivers listed. On brand new machines with Tiger we have used the installer found under the 1022 listing on HP's website and it says (twice) while you're installing the driver that it is the 1020 SERIES driver. We then tell the Mac to detect printers and it correctly finds the 1020 connected to the USB port. Printing from standard office apps and also from a proprietary curriculum application has shown no anomolies thus far.
Again ... if this was a kludge I would have expected to see a 1022 in the available printers list. Instead I saw the 1020, properly identified, ON the USB and it printed correctly. I'm inclined to believe HP simply dropped the ball on this one. cjp SUNY Buffalo |
Not a good solution
I just tried to install it using this driver and fairly poor results. It technically worked, but it was extremely slow ( < 1ppm) even printing simple text documents.
This 1020s is definitely being exchanged towards 1022s. -- Don Ankney |
OS X driver for HP LJ1020
Thanks for the heads up on the 1020 "series" driver over in the 1022 page. Worked great, and seems to have no problems at all.
I'm surprised that HP hasn't linked the 1022 page back to the 1020 page for all us long-time pagan Mac users out here. We got the 1020 for "back to school", price was right, and it seemed like a good choice. Was a bit befuddled by the initial HP page listing only Winders drivers, and almost packed it all back up and took it back to the MegaStore, until I found this forum. Thanks for your help. :D |
I registered on these forums just to say thanks for this information. I would have probably returned this printer otherwise.
|
Does anyone know if this will work over a network? I've got a 1020, and when hooked up to my Mac it works perfectly (using the 1022 driver); however, when I plug it into my PC (Windows XP SP2) I can't print to it. I've tried the generic driver, the Zenographics Mono SDK driver, and so forth.. nothing works.
For some reason "HP LaserJet 1022" isn't even an option when selecting the printer model, but as I said earlier, I know it works when connected directly to my Mac via USB. The only reason I want to hook it up to my PC is because that machine is always on, always on the network, and it's a desktop that won't move. My Mac is a PowerBook. Any ideas? I've scoured my hard disk and one thing I have noticed is that there's no file for this printer at /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj, which strikes me as odd because - again - it works perfectly when plugged in directly, including noting a PPD file version and everything. I've also checked the location at /System/... but that appears to be for Apple's own printers. |
There may be someone on this board who can give the full technical reasons behind this problem; I've never quite gotten the details. There seem to be 2 classes of printer drivers for OS X: ones that assume USB communication, and ones that are network-capable. Network-capable seems to require a PostScript-capable printer (or equivalent, like HP's PCL). This basically means that the computer sends the printer descriptions of what to print, and the printer does the actual rendering. Raster printers, like most consumer inkjets -- and apparently some cheap lasers like the 1020 -- require that the computer itself do the render and send it to the printer. These drivers seem to require a direct connection like USB.
With the exception of Mac-to-Mac printer sharing via Rendezvous/Bonjour, there doesn't seem to be a simple way of using raster-type drivers for network printing. edit: I'm not sure how other manufacturer's represent it, but if you get the PDF specs for the 1020 under "Languages" it says merely "host-based printing." Slightly better printers, like the 1320n, say "HP PCL 6, HP PCL 5e, Postscript Level 2 emulation with automatic language switching." That's generally the clue that it's a network-capable printer, because the computer can just send the PostScript output. |
Thanks for the tip..
I figured as much.. I bought it because it was $50 off at OfficeMax.
I'm just wondering why the Ghostscript pipe trick didn't work on my version of Windows. |
UPDATE:
It works! I rebooted my Mac and now the Zenographics Mono SDK driver is working perfectly! So you know.. I'm not the average baffoon. My primary Mac is my PowerBook, which I just close and open when I need it. As such, I can easily go months between reboots, and I'm not used to needing a reboot after installing printer drivers. Anyhow, it works over the network. Crisp and clear. Just thought I'd let you guys know. Here's the driver page: http://oem.zeno.com/public/SDK/4_Mac...er/Default.htm |
HP Support wasn't much help
I contacted HP Support to let them know that their support pages for the LaserJet 1020 should mention that the LaserJet 1022 driver for OS X is compatible, and that the printer will work just fine with the substitute driver. Instead of a pleasant "thank you", I got the following snarky reply:
"We understand from your e-mail that you have discovered that the HP LaserJet 1020 can be used on a Macintosh computer with the driver for the HP LaserJet 1022. This information is not mentioned on the support site for the LaserJet 1020. "The reason that the driver for the LaserJet 1022 is not mentioned as a solution to use the LaserJet 1020 with the Macintosh operating systems is that the driver for the LaserJet 1022 was never intended to be used with the LaserJet 1020. The LaserJet 1020 is not supported on the Macintosh operating systems. If it was, there would have been a separate driver created for it for use with Macintosh. We cannot guarantee that the LaserJet 1020 will continue to function with the current driver, and any damage caused to the printer or your computer will not be covered under warranty." An incorrect driver voiding the warranty? Whoever heard of such a thing! |
tomjay - HP is just saying that the 1022 driver supports the 1020 by accident, and not by design, and HP will not guarantee that the next system update (or driver update) that will continue to work.
Yes, the driver is just software, but is used to control a mechanical device. Damage to the printer could occur if the driver (updated) or the system software (updated) causes the printer to reposition the head, cartridge, or scanner mechanism in a way that is not mechanically possible, either jamming the printer, or even causing some moving part to fail. HP is saying they will not accept responsibility for that possibility (however unlikely that would be) |
Still not working...
I installed the driver for the 1022, but when I go to "add printer" in system requirements, nothing shows up. It searches automatically using rendezvous, and twice now it's said "driver found" but then given me nothing, the rest of the time it shows nothing. I've switched to USB, because that's how the printer's connected, and nothing shows. Am I doing something wrong?

Laserjet 1022 drivers ok!
Hi all,
Thanks for the hint. I can confirm that by installing the Laserjet 1022 the 1020 model works perfectly. As somebody here pointed out when you install the 1022 drivers, the first window of the setup clearly says that you're about to install the 1020 drivers. Go figure it out, but anyway who cares, the printer works. Thanks for the helo everyone, Ricky |
laserjet 1022 drivers for 1020
The laserjet 1022 drivers work perfectly with the laserjet 1020. I don't know why HP doesn't recommend this. I just purchased a 1020 printer from Staples for $99.98.
|
Wanna hear something weird, I purchased a 1020 today (in Sweden) and on the CD that comes with the printer it says "HP LaserJet 1020" but when I put it in my mac, the title of the CD is "hp LaserJet 1022 Series" and contains the file "hp LaserJet 1020 Series.pkg". So I guess HP is shipping the 1022-driver with the 1020 printer, kind of strange when you read the answer from HP support that tomjay got (above). Or maybe they have tested/fixed the driver to work perfectly with the 1020 the last months.
I also want to have the printer connected to a PC and print from my Mac over the network, will try the Zenographics Mono SDK driver that extstudios where using... |

I too have my HP1020 connected to an XP pro machine. I downloaded and installed the Zenographics driver and installed (on the mac). When I add printer through printer setup utility and browse to it through default browser/more printers/window printing/network neighborhood, I can see the printer HP laserjet 1020 but when I select it, the zeno driver is not listed as a choice. What should I do from here? I can't print to the HP1020? Any help would be much appreciated. |
need help PLEASE
Hello! I had to purchase a Laser Jet 1020 today because I need a laser that could print onto plastic-type surface cards [long horrible printer-screw up story], and this was the only one that would do it without melting the cards.
Since the System Req. didn't include Mac, I did a quick online search before I purchased the printer, and found this forum [thanks!]. I bought the printer, downloaded the driver from HP as you all have done- the printer shows up, I can select it, I can send a doc. to the printer...then NOTHING. The printer just closes down and says "printing stopped." ANY SUGGESTIONS? I am still using OS 10.3.9, have not upgraded to 10.4 yet, is this perhaps the problem? |
Sometimes my HP Business InkJet 1100 does the same thing. I just press the "Start Printing" button in the print status windows.
Did you try this? |

How to Use a Printer Attached to a Windows XP Computer in Mac OS X http://iharder.sourceforge.net/macosx/winmacprinter/ The zenographics-driver is not needed. Since the HP LaserJet 1020 is not a "all-PostScript printer" you need some software on the windows machine to rasterizes PostScript, the software is Ghostscript, GSview and RedMon. Just follow the guide above. (I am using Windows 2000, not XP and then you have to read the part "Update: RedMon and Default User" in the guide.) |
yes!
it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D :D :D :D :D

Wow, thank god for this thread!
I too ordered this printer online for $110 and then realized after I had it it wasn't mac supported. I use an HP laserjet 1200 at work and I just assumed this one would work as well. Anyway, the disk I got with the printer had no mac info/drivers on it whatsoever. Downloaded the 1022 driver as suggested, restarted, did a printer utitily reset, and bonjour saw and added the 1020 printer with no problem when it was connected to my extreme basestation. Network printing works fast and well with this printer. I'm one happy dude :D |
Need HP Laserjet 1020 driver for OS 9 Classic in OSX
I am using an HP LaserJet 1020 with Mac OS 10.3.9. The LaserJet 1022 Print Driver works flawlessly with the 1020 printer. Does anyone know of a Print Driver that will allow me to print from applications that are running in OS 9 Classic? Please let me know.
Thanks. Dan |
I installed the 1022 driver, rebooted multiple times, and I couldn't get the 1020 or 1022 to show up in the list in the Printer Setup Utility. To solve this, I moved everything from /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/ up to /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/ Then I went back to the Printer Setup Utility and OSX found it right away. I also reset printing in the Printer Setup Utility menu a few times, don't know if this was necessary or not. Hope this helps you, Apintrix.

sharing with Windows?
I have followed the instructions here and gotten my mac mini working with my HP LaserJet 1020. Yay! When I share the printer on the network and then connect windows xp to it, printing doesn't work from windows. Everything in Windows says "printing...done!", but the printer never does anything. (10.4.latest)
Has anyone shared this printer (on a mac) with a windows xp machine? |
HP pulls 1022 driver
I just downloaded the driver from hp's web site on Tuesday when I received my G5 back from repair. Unfortunately I did not keep the driver image, because when I went to hp's web site today, the OS X link was gone from the 1022 download page! I called hp asking where the driver was, but the tech support person said they did not know why the link was pulled.
|
I think I am in the same position as some others. I just bought the HP1020 and I am looking for the 1022 driver but it seems HP has removed it from their download page. I did find one for the 1022n but that doesn't seem to work. Any idea on others sites/places that may have the driver available for download? Thanks in advance.

Looks like a recent change (05-2006), allowing you to order the installer CD for 1020/1022 from HP web site for a shipping charge.

Can anyone send the file: "LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg" to:
meta_lj AT yahoo DOT com Thanks. That would be great. |
I found it:
It is still on their ftp site even though it is not on their website. ftp://ftp.hp.com:/pub/softlib/softwa...Series_OSX.dmg Now if I can only get Printer Setup to recognize it. Grrr. |
I'm guessing that some library files are missing. I looked in other HP folders and library files were present. The laserjet folder has only plugins and no library files. We need those.
|
For those who got the 1022 drivers to work, could you please tell me if the following files are the only files in the 1020 series folder in the printers library:
Duplex.plugin hp LaserJet Cleaning Utility hplj1020PM.plugin Options.plugin Paper.plugin PrintQuality.plugin These are the only files I got from the 1022 installer. Does anyone who got the 1022 installer to work have any other files? If so, can you send them to me please, at: meta_lj AT yahoo DOT com Thank you, Lorenzo |
Got the CD from hp
To those of you who asked, I have emailed a link to mysharefile.com where the image of the CD I got from hp.
If anyone was space to host the image (100MB) I will send it to them as well to share the wealth. |
Thanks. I would ask for that link, but I returned the printer.

I may have to return the printer too. Avataris, how can I get that link?

I will e-mail the link to you again.

Have Old Driver Files
The fact that HP changed the driver 6 days ago and there's all these posts that the 1022 driver no longer works totally makes sense.
I bought an HP 1020 about four weeks ago for my office, downloaded the 1022 driver, and it worked perfectly on my G4 PB. Yesterday I bought another 1020 for home, downloaded the driver, and it won't find the 1020 in the list of available printer drivers, even though the software tells me it "installed successfully." If someone can tell me which files need to be copied from my PB to my home iMac, and where they need to be copied to (Library, User Library, etc.), I can try it. If it works, I'll make the old driver files available. |
If the installer left a .pkg in "/Library/Receipts" (I don't have an hp printer so I don't know if it does), it might be possible to use 'lsbom' to see what was installed by each version to make a comparison. eg. (substitute the correct name for the package):
Code:
/usr/bin/lsbom -p f /Library/Receipts/hpdriver.pkg/Contents/Archive.bom > ~/Desktop/hpbom.txtCode:
/usr/bin/diff ~/Desktop/hpold.txt ~/Desktop/hpnew.txt |
I got a hold of the 1022 driver before they updated it on hp's ftp. Although when I go to install it, I get a "You cannot continue. There is nothing to install." message? Anyone else give it a shot, or know whats up with it? heres the file;
http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg peace |
Your file installs for me, must be something else happening on your system, or that same driver is already installed on your system. Try removing the reciept pkg file (from the /Library/Reciepts folder) and give that installer another try. The one you have is from Dec 2004. There appears to be a newer installer, available for shipping charge from HP, have you tried that one?

Install HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OSX
wow its working, good call DeltaMac. I havent tried the HP CD, but after all this I wouldnt give them another dime.
Heres a recap for everyone to Install HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OSX. 1) Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg (Old version) 2) If you have anything for the HP 1020 in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it. 3) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility" 4) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD Then you should be able to print.. glad we finally got around this one.. and one big FU to HP. |
I could not agree more with what appears to the right of the two dots on the last line.
I took mine back yesterday and got a Brother 2040 for about the same price and with better resolution and memory size. But had I seen this option, I would have tried it. I am half tempted to get the 1020 again, as I liked it. But if I can't get it to work, then I deserve flogging. <edit> Actually, I just now downloaded what you have and it is identical to what I found on the HP ftp site (I went scrounging, there is no link but they still have it there.) I also can verify that it installed every file that appears there. I did this on 4 computers with no success. All are 10.4.6. |
Quote:
Sorry, didn't read this until just now. I'm going to compare the two sets of files and see what has changed. <edit> Everything has changed according to diff. The files have the same names. But their content differs. So they replaced one that worked with one that didn't, and then hid the one that didn't work. (I don't blame them for hiding the one that doesn't work, but WTF?). |

For some very sick reason, I am tempted to go buy the printer again.
Makes me think of the famous Presidential quote: "There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." |
It looks like the "new" version of the installer installs universal binaries, so what could have happened was that the decision wasn't so much to maliciously prevent 1020 users from using the 1022 driver but rather laziness in not bothering to update or include the files for the 1020. That sort of thing goes with the territory of using an unsupported driver, I suppose. No reason why they couldn't have left the old installer on the site though, apart from maybe the potential for confusion with having different versions, and the whole CD thing seems a bit odd.
The "universal" vs. "PPC only" difference makes it hard to compare differences within files, but one conspicuous difference is in the contents of the "hplj1020PM.plugin: fpc's link /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1020.img /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1022.img /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1022n.img wgscott's ftp link /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1022.img /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/1020Series/hplj1020PM.plugin/Contents/Resources/hp1022n.img The above is just an observation - I don't have an hp printer so I can't confirm if this means anything. I think people would be better off avoiding the 1020 - it isn't supported so who knows what will happen for example when "Leopard" comes out. If you like hp, spring for the 1022 which is supported, or else do as voldenuit suggested earlier and buy from someone else with better Mac support. |
Wow, the 1022 driver does work on my 1020.
Amazing.. I was just about to return my printer, lol No problem with the printing, but Can anybody let me know how to set the 'double-side print', like it does on windows xp. Thanks in advance |

or use the 1022 driver that come with CD. |
Finally my first post in this forum after having watched the discussions here for some time.
First, my apology for owning an HP 1020 is that I bought it as a Win XP printer where it does a great job. Now, I have completely switched to a MacBookPro (10.4.6) and am desparately trying to get the 1020 working. I have tried the new HP website driver version (successfully installs, but I cannot select the driver when adding the 1020 in the printer setup) as well as the new version (where it tells me "there's nothing to install" even though I made sure that library and PSU are free of any HP files). My questions are hence as follows: 1) Does someone know the trick to get this old driver up and running? Where could be my mistake? 2) Does the old version support any Intel Macs? 3) Isn't there a star out there that could alter the new HP website version to include the 1020? 4) Or will I need to buy a new printer...? Many thanks for any help from Germany! |

Hope I backed up that older dmg to enough drives to last the lifetime of this printer. :)
New question though. Suppose I want the printer hooked physically to a PC and share it to the macs. I'm not seeing the printer after navigating to the PC. The other PC's see it, but not the 10.3.9 mac. Any thoughts? |
I also want to thank the group (and DeltaMac) for saving my $100. The old drivers work GREAT. II don't find this kind of help on the Windoze help boards. Thanks again.

hi guys i'm new both here and as a mac user i used to connect my hp 1020 with my XP notebook and it works great while recently i bought a macbook and seems that i have no luck in connecting the printer to it i've tried both the old and new driver while the new driver can be successfully installed, the model no. didnt come up when u try to add it as an new printer, as a result when u press "print' nothing happens for the old driver it can not be installed (just like some of the user's mentioned above that "nothing can be installed") so imo i think the old driver do include the 1020 part, and its for PPC, while the new driver is universal binary though HP took out the part for 1020... hai~~~does anyone know any other drivers which can work on intel mac? |
doesn't work for me..

I am at work now, can't print, so thinking about just going home.. |
Sort of working now
Hi,
I managed to get my canon i6100 up and running by doing an Advanced setup Windows over SAMBA smb://user@WORKGROUP/SERVER/printer I just need to get this HP1020 working or at least showing up in my printer list. So any help in posting a link to the old driver that works would be just great. I am also having the problem where it says "nothing to install". I have also taken your advice and removed all traces of the HP1020 in the receipts file. Puzzled. |

Hp 1020
Hi,
I am also struggling with the HP1020 due to some bad info from a sales person. I have followed the instructions as listed on the website and get the driver to appear when I add the printer but it give me the following error. "An error occured while trying to add the selected printer. client-error-request-value-too-long." I have no idea what that means but I have tried numerous different ways of installing the printer software and always get this message. The printer was working before using the 1022 software and driver but now no go. Any ideas? |
HP told us...
I've bought the LaserJet 1020 after reading this forum thread, hoping it'll have worked with the Mac Os even if it wasn't declared to.
Since the fact that this printer is very similar to the 1022 model (which is Mac compatible), I thought HP did a "marketing operation" forcing the Mac users to spend more than Pc users to get an entry level laser printer. That is not quite true. I sent two emails to HP Italy (that's where I'm from): one to pre-sales customer care, the other (after the printer worked perfectly with my iMac and the 1022 driver) to post-sales customer care. Both emails asked if I could ever use the 1020 with Mac Os through the 1022 driver. Pre-sales answered:"We confirm the impossibilty to use the 1020 printer with the Mac Os platform. Moreover, we advice against using a driver with a printer it wasn't mean for." So I assumed they were trying to cheat me, paying more for quite the same thing: we all know how business works, sometimes... And then the post-sales sentence:"Officially the 1020 printer is not Mac Os compatible. The printer communication protocol, called host-based, doesn't guarantee the perfect behaviour in every application on this platform even if installation was successfull (in fact 1022 has a language called HP PCL 5). Regarding hardware damages to the printer coming from using a printer with a driver that wasn't mean for, we have no reports of any peripheral damaged if installed in a system formerly not compatible. By the way, the 1020 is mechanically very similar to the 1022 printer, which is Mac compatible." In few words, the differences between these two models lay not only in printer speed or the tray capacity, but even in the way the communicate with the computer. This fact brings to the conclusion that if the 1020 works with the 1022 driver is by accident (or something similar). Anyway, mine works! So, once in a liftime, thumbs up for honesty. To tell the truth, HP tols us it wasn't build for Mac... |

Any idea ? |
Got one of these here in Australia from Officeworks. Connected the printer, popped in the CD, installed the software that showed up on the CD, added a new printer (it detected the printer, and automatically selected the newly installed driver).
Couldn't have been easier. |

Thanks fpc and DeltaMac for all your help, this works great! |
Hi everyone,
I just bought an HP laserjet 1020 thinking it would work with my powerbook bc I read this forum beforehand...however, it's not the case at all. I tried the old driver version and the installer tells me there is nothing to install. I rtied the new version and it didnt find it in the list of drivers. I tried removing and reinstalling...I tried resetting....I dont know waht to do. I really thought it would work. Can somebody please send me the old driver version bc that seems to be the one that works, right? does it matter what folder these drivers are in? I tried to do all of the possible tricks everyone has posted but ntohing has worked...any help would be appreciated! email me: ishde@hotmail.com |
I have been trying to figure this out for the last couple of days. The old drivers worked, but the new drivers from the hp site (1022) did not register at all. The key was the older drivers for me. Thanks. You saved me a ton of stress.

So after seeing the trouble people were having here, and after my own mistakes and errors in trying to do so, I thought I should post my little (huge) guide here about networking from an OSX machine to a WinXP machine connected to the LaserJet 1020:
--- 1: Ensure that the WinXP machine has the printer sharing turned on for the 1020, a shared name that is no longer than 8 characters (for simplicity), as well as permissions to print for the account through which you wish to access the printer. (the permissions will generally default to letting any account print after enabling sharing so that last part shouldn't be an issue) 2: Download the Zenographics MAC Monochrome Driver onto your mac from: http://oem.zeno.com/public/SDK/4_Mac...er/Default.htm (it's the second link on that page). 3: Mount the Zenographics .dmg and install the driver 4: Open the "Printer Setup Utility" 5: Click "Add" 6: While holding the "alt" key, click "More Printers..." 7: From the first dropdown, select "advanced". 8: For "Device", select Windows Printer via SAMBA 9: Pick a colorful name for your printer and place it in "Device Name" 10: For "Device URI" use the format: smb://username:password@WORKGROUP/XP_MACHINE_NAME/SHARED_PRINTER_NAME 11: For "Printer Model", select "ESP" and then select the "Zenographics SDK Mono CUPS v1.1" printer. 12: Select "ADD" 13: Your printer should work! Elaborations for tricky steps: 1: You should know how to do this, but if not: right click on the 1020 printer in the "Printers" control panel and select "Sharing and Security". Check "Enable sharing for this device". Exhaustive information on how to share a printer is readily available online, so I'm not going to go into that any further. 10: This format screws people up sometimes. If you have the guest account enabled on the XP host machine, you may not need the username:password section, but just for completeness, you would use "smb://guest@WORKGROUP..." I hate the guest account and leave it disabled, so I set up a special account for printing on the XP machine called "PrintAccount" with a password "LetsPrint". The XP machine is on the workgroup "WORKGROUP", the XP machine is named "XPBOX", and the 1020 is shared as "1020SHARED". My string looks like this: smb://PrintAccount:LetsPrint@WORKGROUP/XPBOX/1020SHARED". 11: If you don't see the ESP group or the CUPS printer afte installing the Zenographics driver, try rebooting. If that doesn't work, reinstall the driver. 13: If your printer doesn't work, look at the error you get back in the print queue. Something like NT_ACCESS_DENIED means the XP machine rejected your request for access. This is either because you didn't enable printer sharing on the XP machine, your printer sharing permissions on the XP machine are wrong, or you put in the wrong username/password combination in the URI string. NT_ACCOUNT_NOTEXIST or something means the account does not exist that you are trying to use in the URI. ---- Phew, ok. I hope that helps. The 1020 is a great little printer (and often very cheap after markdowns). It's definitely nice to have networked. -TheMane |
HP LJ 1020 on OSX
I bought a Laserjet 1020 yesterday here in Germany, and since I assumed the CD wouldn't have mac drivers I followed the advice from this thread and downloading the 1022 drivers, tried them, nothing worked, then I tried the older version that some people used, still didn't work.
Then I just put in the cd that came with it, which had mac drivers on it, and they work perfectly. Maybe HP has fixed the problem already? |
just in case anyone else is having trouble getting this to work, the keys for me were to delete the directories as others have said and then i had to quit and restart the printer utility. i guess it rescans for new drivers when you quit.
its really annoying that HP doesn't have a mac driver for this printer. |
I made same mistake as, apparently, many others. I bought hp LaserJet 1020 in a hurry, and thereafter found problems with Mac and the printer. Has anyone succeeded in printing with the following combination of hard-/sofware: MacBook Pro, OS X 10.4.7 and hp LaserJet 1020.
— I have tried driver(s) for 1022 model but nothing happens: printing begins (on the screen and job has been performed [but only virtually]). What should be done? The printer description for 1022 does not appear in the list of printers recognized but the printer itself states its identity in Printer Setup Utility. |
[QUOTE=shamu1315]Thanks for the heads up on the 1020 "series" driver over in the 1022 page. Worked great, and seems to have no problems at all.
Have you Intel-based Mac and 10.4.7? Have any experience with hp 1020 printer in that environment? (I hope someone has - good or bad to know if it is worth trying and re-trying.) |
thank you so much
Hello there, oh helpful of helpful people!
I just wanted to say thanks for your helpful posts and links about getting the HP laserjet 1020 to work on my iBook. It all started today when I wanted to print out a PDF of a journal article. My deskjet had run out of ink (once again) and I said.. today will be the day I buy a laskerjet printer. So I looked here and there for a good deal on a great little printer and finally settled on the HP LJ 1020. Brought it home without realizing that perhaps HP didn't care much for OS X. When I noticed that the CD was only for Windows, my heart sank. Many hours later I finally got to print off that PDF, but I would have returned the printer if it weren't for your detailed descriptions and links to the pre-1020 drivers. You know.. I still may return it. I don't feel especially like giving HP any of my money. :o BK. |
I would just like to say that the above-stated solution, installing the old 1022 drivers, works on an Macbook (Intel machine). The OS is version 10.4.6.
Now I just have to back up this driver everywhere I can think of. Thanks to everyone on this thread. I think I would have returned this printer if it wasn't for the help on this thread. |
Now This Really Helped
I am running OS X.3.9. After several desperate attempts, I managed to get this to work. I had to move up the contents of the 1020series folder, though. The next step is to find a way to get this to connect with my wireless network so I can use my powerbook.:) :o
