Quicktime Player does NOT play sounds
Hello.
I am using a MacMini with 10.4.1 and Quicktime Player 7.0.0. Since a couple of days the QT player does not plat the sounds of my MPG files anymore. I know that files are still OK, checked it on my older Mac with same versions. I suspect that something might have gotten corrupted with my QT player when I installed VLC. How can I fix my problem? Could the plist be the problem? I always read about the plists but do not know what they are, where they are and how to remove or reset them? Any help or tips appreciated. Thanks, Andreas, Brunei |
Is your sound muted or do you have something plugged into your headphone jack? Does sound work for other applications, like DVD player?

Deleting a plist has always been a quick-and-easy way to reset an application, because an application that can't find its plist assumes it's running for the first time. ------RM |
no success so far ...
Thanks guys, but no luck so far:
- no headphones or anything else connected, other applications such as VCL still play the MPG with sound. The quicktime player also still plays my *.MOV files with sounds. - I have removed both the quicktimeplayer related plists - did not help unfortunately. I also tried to play the MPG from withinh iPhoto but that of course also launches the quickytime player so no luck there either. Any other means of checking what could be wrong? Thanks, Andreas |
What items are checked in your Quicktime Preferences?
|
all options ticked
All options (sound) in the preferences are ticked. I have never changed them since it stopped to work anyway.
Could I try and re-install the 10.4.1 upgrade? Could this solve the problem? Or is there a wat I can install Quicktime 7.0 seperately? And if yes, then from where? Thanks, Andreas |
I'd also be in a solution to this problem, as my friend is having this problem on his 1.5 GHz PowerBook...although i haven't had a chance to look at it yet, i have walked him through all the basic troubleshooting steps without success.

Try unchecking "Play sound in frontmost player only"
|
still no luck
Thanks - I have tried that but it did noy seem to make a deifference.
Next thing I will do is download QT 7 at work an install it again. Will let you know in case this is successful. Thanks, Andreas |
Installed Quicktime 7.0.1 - still no sound
Downloaded and installed QT version 7.0.1 today but even this did not bring back the sounds to my MPG movies...
What other steps can I do to get my sound back ??? Thanks, Andreas |
are these files encoded with a Divx codec?
Divx is currently broken for Tiger/QT7, so maybe that's it? |
Not encoded
No thanks, I have never encoded any files (as far as I know...)
|
are these movies your own? Off a digital camera or something?
|
My own mpg's from a digital camera...
Yes, they are from a Sony digital camera and used to play just fine - even the old ones that I have since years do not play with sound anymore...
Just to make sure that there is nothing wromng with my own account I creatd a new one and put one of the mpgs in the shared area to test it. Still no luck with this one either. Another thing I realised is that the movies which are about 15 seconds long stop playing at around 12 seconds and then directly jump to the end. Really cannot explain these features... |
I have been corresponding with Andreas Peter via email over the last 24 hours in an attempt to find a solution to his problem. He sent me a sample file -- which had sound when I played it in QT 7.0.1 Pro / Tiger (yes, i finally bit the bullet and purchased QT Pro :p) on my computer, but not on his.
We did find a solution...open up the program "Audio Midi Setup" located in your /Applications/Utilities folder. Click the tab that says Audio Devices. Now go to the Audio Output section on the bottom right part of the window. In the drop down boxt next to "Format" change the frequency (sampling rate) to 44100.0 Hz. The problem seems to be, for some reason, upon installing QT 7 on some user's machines this value is getting set to something higher than what the computer can output, and therefore no sound is coming out. Hope this helps |
MBHockey, you are a genius! I have been trying to find a solution to this for a while now!
How strange that the QT 7.0.1 install changes that setting in Tiger! Thanks for posting the solution :D |
I'm glad it helped you :)
|
Yeah, thanks... was wondering why VLC had such poor audio all of a sudden...sounds like a bug report to Apple is warranted.
edit- mine was set at 192,000Hz... |
I'm having the same problem but I'm using WinXP, how do I change the frequency using windows? I've tryed using the system devices and control pannels and cannot figure out where is it located.
Thanks, -Derek |

Secondly, these forums are intended for Mac OS X problems. I suggest posting in this forum. You're more likely to get the right help. |
I have had the same problem, what I read somewhere is to start Garage Band. Then quit it, audio should come back. It works for me anyway.
I expereience this problem about twice a month and this has always worked for me. |
