Meh. Maybe they'll start making keyboards with an "Any" key.

Craig R. Arko 05-23-2005 12:38 PM

There may indeed be an "Any" key on the Paris Hilton personalized keyboard.

I thought they were ALL labeled "Any" on her keyboard? :)

ShavenYak 05-23-2005 02:34 PM

Surely someone put that in the FAQ as a joke. Please, God, let that be true.

fat elvis 05-23-2005 02:46 PM

LOL, that's great. I bet this was posted for the sake of managers, directors, etc.

styrafome 05-23-2005 02:53 PM

You know this stuff is no joke if you've ever worked in phone tech support.
I have.

It was probably put there for managers.

acme.mail.order 05-23-2005 07:56 PM

Surprised they left the term 'strike' in there. Or maybe it's a plot to sell more keyboards.

strike verb
...
2 a : to aim and usually deliver a blow, stroke, or thrust (as with the hand, a weapon, or a tool) b : to arrive with detrimental effect <disaster struck> c : to attempt to undermine or harm something as if by a blow.
3 : to come into contact forcefully <two ships struck in mid channel>

bedouin 05-23-2005 08:50 PM

This has actually been in Compaq's FAQ database since like 99 or 98.

Now, what precisely changed in the technology of the "any" key that would require updating the FAQ?!?

styrafome 05-24-2005 02:53 AM

Maybe that's when Compaq started selling handhelds so they had to add that part?

acme.mail.order 05-24-2005 09:10 AM

If you are writing new dialogs:

"Press any key to continue or any other key to quit"

"Press any key except that one to continue."

"Read Error. Press any key to format drive or enter any 27-digit prime number to cancel."

And my all-time favourite (boot an intel machine without a keyboard to see it)

"Bad or missing keyboard. Press any key* to continue"

*sometimes says 'F1'

Actually, I think it usually says 'Keyboard Error. Press F1 to continue.' these days.

I can top that message, though. At my last job, the network guys sent out an email to the entire company that said something like "We have been having trouble with the email system, but we believe it has been resolved. If you are still having trouble with your email, please contact the help desk (helpdesk@thecompany.com). Thank you."

Ages ago I remember a television ad for the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the BLIND) that finished with "Call the number on your screen....."

"ShavenYak" sounds like it has an interesting history. Do we want to know?

styrafome 05-25-2005 11:41 AM

And then there was the VCR that came with an instructional videotape on how to set up and use the VCR...

The Shaven Yak was a minor character on the Ren & Stimpy Show. I honestly don't know what made me choose that as my online name, but I use it just about everywhere.

As I post this from my computer whose DNS record is stimpy.foo.whatever.edu:

Oh, we've all done that, or similar. Like picking up a cordless phone in an attempt to report a power outage.

Or you say to a customer, "Now you need to reboot your Mac" and the line goes dead.

It's not a good idea to call support on a line connected through the computer that you're having problems with...
