safari 1.3 contextual menu goof

the 10.3.9 update has caused safari to do 1 weird thing. when i right click a link to open in new tab, the contextual menu has a "localized string not found" item in it above the two items that are supposed to be there. looks like this:

localized string not found
Open Link in New Tab
localized string not found
Add Link to Bookmarks
localized string not found

any thoughts on why this is happening and maybe a way i can fix it. only safari 1.2 is available for d/l on apple site.

bramley 04-18-2005 05:25 AM

The items should be:-

Open Link in New Window
Open Link in New Tab
Download Linked File
Add Link to Bookmarks
Copy Link

(where bold shows the items missing on your list)

This means that one of the localised strings file is either bad or with the wrong permissions. I can't see (with a brief inspection) which file this is in the Safari package - but hopefully this is only a permissions issue.

I'd try and repair your file permissions with Disc Utility in the first instance.

voldenuit 04-18-2005 05:33 AM

And if you don't have any working Safari 1.3 installation to steal the files from, you can always download the 1.2 version, install it once you hid the Receipt for the 10.3.9 update and junked the remains of the old install (but keep your bookmarks).
Then run the 10.3.9 update again.

It's a little bit of "...get a larger hammer", but it should work out ok.

Try bramleys gentle approach first, however...

idleFingers 04-18-2005 03:21 PM

i have had the same problem. tried both approaches. no luck.
i found the localised strings file; Safari package/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/localised.strings I have no idea what to do with it though.

MBHockey 04-18-2005 03:54 PM

It's a problem with WebKit.

Are you guys running the third-party add-on Saft for Safari?

If so, there are directions on the developer's website for a fix (which is simply reinstalling the latest combo updater, I believe).

idleFingers 04-18-2005 05:49 PM

no, i'm not using saft. i am using acid search though, but when i re-installed safari 1.2 i got rid of all the acid search files, then updated to 10.3.9 again and tested safari before installing acid search again and it still had the "localised string not found" crap.

Another Issue with Latest Update....

Does anyone know why the shortcut for 'View Source' has been changed in the latest update to Safari?

It used to be Opt-Alt-V, and is now Opt-Alt-U.

yellow 04-18-2005 06:15 PM

My contextual menus stayed the same from Safari 1.2 -> 1.3.

bramley 04-18-2005 07:12 PM

There does not appear to be any localised string stuff in '/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/localised.strings' relevant to the contextual menu in question. The menu items can be seen in the executable however.

I am definitely running Safari 1.3. It might be an idea for those with the menu problem to check they really have Safari 1.3 installed (Safari menu -> About Safari) and do not have 1.2.4 still. I'm just playing a sort of hunch here.

adyblain 04-18-2005 07:53 PM

i'm definitely running 1.3.

i had sogudi, and acid search installed, which caused a problem with safari not launching. i uninstalled the SIMBL folder in Applciation Helpers, and re-ran the 10.3.9 installer, and safari is working great now, except for that.

oh well, Tiger is out in less than 2 weeks! gotta remember to uninstall all the third-party add-ons before running the updater. plus, i move some of my apps around, and i always have to move them back to the Applications folder before updaters, too.

Out of curiosity (those that have the problem), what language is your OS set to use by default?

EatsWithFingers - here's the reasoning from Safari Keyboard and Mouse shortcuts (in Safari)
'Changed in Tiger to match "View Raw Source" in Mail'

I think you mean Opt-cmd-U, not Opt-Alt-U

idleFingers 04-19-2005 03:17 AM

i am running safari 1.3 in English. i would say oh well, i'll just wait for tiger, but i can't afford it. :(

bramley 04-19-2005 04:03 AM

The common theme seems to be 3rd party extensions to Safari - unfortunately I don't use these so I can't confirm this. However, my vanilla install does not have the issue.

I assume it's possible that they are overriding the menu contents somehow but the strings Safari uses to search out the correct text have changed and therefore the links to the correct text have been broken.

idleFingers 04-19-2005 05:27 AM

i still have the problems after removing all third party plugins and then going through the install safari 1.2 then re-install 10.3.9 to update safari to 1.3 and checking safari before reinstalling any plugins again.
this sucks.

DeltaMac - Thanks! I'm not sure if this was the right thread to post to, but I didn't want to begin a new one for such a trivial point.

Are Alt and Cmd not the same thing? Whatever the name of the key to the immediate left of the left-hand Opt key is, that's the one I meant! :)

On an American keyboard it goes (from the bottom):

Control | Option(Alt) | Command(Apple) | Spacebar

it may not have been the 3rd party apps after all that caused this problem, because after running the java update that was just released...and the security update, the localized strings are now fixed in Safari! this is great because one of the missing options was 'open link in new tab.' how could i live without that!?'

adyblain 04-24-2005 10:16 PM

I Lied

No contextual menu problem but...

I'm also experiencing "localized string not found" after updating to 10.3.9. In my case, it's appearing in the History menu and the Downloads window but not in contextual menus. I've repaired permissions (as always after an update) but it didn't help.

History menu:

http://home.woh.rr.com/rjj/images/temp/history.jpg

Downloads window:

http://home.woh.rr.com/rjj/images/te...zed_string.jpg

The Downloads window problem occurs only during a download and then, once the download is complete, the expected info is displayed. I have never installed plug-ins (other than those installed by default) and I used the combo updater. I don't plan on buying Tiger until I buy a new PowerBook so it would be nice to find a solution. :)

When i downloaded the update I had safari open and at about the end of the update safari shut down and would not start back up. I deleted and got a new copy of it, and now its working right again

Update: Fixed

I re-applied the combo update and repaired permissions. The issues that I reported earlier are issues no more. Happy!

i'm jealous.

I had the "localized string not found" problem even after I did a re-install (safari 1.2 + 10.3.9 Combo) and did repair disk permissions with Disk Utility. On my second try, I junked the webkit folder located at /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework before installing Safari 1.2 + OS X 10.3.9 combo update again, and the problem was solved. Of course backup is recommended (webkit, /Applications/Safari.app, and ~/Library/Safari folders).
