Do you use Classic?

I can only with difficulty recall the last time I used "Classic"--autumn 2001 while in Munich, just before Word for OS X was released. My needs are such that I haven't had to use Classic since, and I don't miss it at all.

The author of another thread here suggested that upgrading to Tiger might depend on its supporting Classic. That prompted me to wonder how many people use Classic and why?

So, I thought I'd post a poll to see. While you don't have to explain why you use classic to vote, I'd appreciate it if you did.

Best,
darin

I hate hate hate!!! Going to classic. If anything makes me do it, I find another way to get what I want done. Even games that have a Corbonizer, but still a classic installer I avoid. I had nothing against the old interface, I just hate how clunky it makes everything when it's on.

yellow 04-14-2005 07:51 AM

I've long since Zipped it up for a rainey day.

Craig R. Arko 04-14-2005 07:57 AM

I have 2-3 Classic games that I run every so often, so I said about once a month.

My email server still runs on 8.1, though. Although Tiger Server is looking to finally wean me off of that. :)

malkin 04-14-2005 08:02 AM

I would if I could.. but I can't. :( I've only got a backup of the OS9 files made when we upgraded to OSX, not the actual "bootable" disk. :P

bedouin 04-14-2005 08:57 AM

There are many installers for old games (Unreal Tournament, Red Faction) that use OS 9 to install, though there are OS X binaries to launch the game. Classic doesn't take much hard drive space, so there's no reason not to have it.

Apps I run Classic for:

• Photoshop 3 (I hate Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS)
• SoundEdit 16
• Fontographer
• FileMaker 4 for clients who never upgraded to 5
• MIDIgraphy

68K Apps I run Classic for:

• Quill (I have some ancient MacWrite 4.x documents I need access to sometimes)
• SuperPaint (similarly, ancient illustrations and graphs)
• FileMaker 2.1 mostly for nostalgia's sake

Apps & Functions I reboot in MacOS 9 for:

•*DVD video playback (it's a WallStreet, with the OS9-dependent decoder card)
• scanning (both of my scanners lack OS X drivers)

Apps & Functions I reboot in MacOS 8.1(!) for:

•*I still edit icons and icon masks in 8.1 using ResEdit.
• Used to use it for MIDIgraphy but recently found an OS9-compatible version.

lights_sound 04-14-2005 10:39 AM

i boot into classic a fair bit considering most of my lighting design programs and professional sound edditing programs that i have copies of are made for OS 9. i dont see much point in upgrading to the os x versions of these, just because they have made a osx installer rather than a OS9 one..but that is life.. i suppose that is tiger doesnt support OS9, i will be forced to upgrade but until then i will keep using OS9 ona daily basis.

I don't even have Classic installed.

Use Classic constantly.

Hello,

We were curious about this also...thanks for broaching Classic use as a topic.

We do all of our HTML work using PageMill 3.0 on classic. Ditto graphics on Illustrator 9.

Both those app's have some quirks. E.g. PM 3.0's spell checker kills app when dictionary gets "too large." Ugh!

Sometimes IL 9 would die on startup, but if you always load a recently edited file first, ones that kill it will then load.

MAC OSX Hints told us how important it is to (earlier versions of OSX) use sys pref's to set max sizes on Classic apps.

Thanks again,
Doug.

I ran Classic once but it was only out of curiousity. First time Mac user... and loving it!!

AndrewInScotland 04-14-2005 05:13 PM

Classic - why bother?

I find it runs slow and if ever a program attempts to open Classic, quick as a flash I close it. I don't need it, and I don't want it, so when it tries to open, it's just a nuisance on my Mac.

So, who cares if Tiger has or hasn't got it!

PAH. It's allright for you guys, it seems.
But I still have to design stuff in Quark 4.1 (yeccch) occasionally, cos not all of my printers have embraced Quark 6 with open arms.....

Oh, and I still have a beige G3 running OS8.6 purely for ISDN. I don't use it very often, but just lately I've noticed how cheap & cartoony it looks compared to OSX - and I used to think that the Mac OS (pre X) was to die for....

RacerX 04-15-2005 01:26 PM

Well, of my two Mac OS X systems, only one is setup with Classic, but I rarely use it (mainly for Warbirds). Otherwise, I have two systems running 8.6 and one running 8.1 on which I can use all my older apps. My 8100 (with a G3/500 in it) is setup with all my major applications (pre-Mac OS X versions). It is easier to just sit down at that system and use those apps than to fire up Classic and deal with any incompatibilities that would pop up. And I really only use the 8100 for scanning at this point (either into Acrobat or Photoshop), or if I have some need for Illustrator, PageMaker or QuarkXPress (all of which were replaced on my Mac OS X systems with Create).

Come to think of it, I don't even have Blue Box (Mac OS 8.6) installed on my Rhapsody (Mac OS X Server 1.2v3) system.

I have enough native apps on my systems that they are all pretty much self contained.

staypuft 04-15-2005 01:35 PM

I use Classic occasionally for Reunion 7, if I get an urge to play an older game, and I had need to run Adobe Streamline earlier this week.

sailgreg 04-15-2005 03:21 PM

I dont use classic, and will remove it first thing once I do a clean install of tiger.

Caius 04-15-2005 04:35 PM

I had actually forgotten about classic until I saw this thread. I have it installed to play one game from back on about OS 6 called Dome Wars. I only have that to prove that I got the name Nemo from that (which was probably from 20,000 leagues under the sea) and not from the film Finding Nemo.

rj89 04-15-2005 07:39 PM

i can't even remember the last time i used classic. it was probably for streamline as well. I wish they would port streamline to OSX (save me some time when i dont feel like illustrating) ;)

cameranerd74 04-18-2005 12:00 PM

I switched to Mac OS X at 10.1.1. By switched, I mean that I booted into OSX and told myself I wasn't going back to 9 unless I absolutely HAD to. At that time I spent a LOT of time in classic. As 10.1 progressed I found myself using classic less than daily... by 10.2.3 I was using classic about once every 2 weeks. Now I really don't use it at all... every once in a great while.

Photek 04-18-2005 02:45 PM

I simply have no need to use classic anymore, all the apps I use (photoshop, indesign, illstrator, Quark, Dreamweaver, Flash, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Cinema 4D, Vectorworks) all made the switch so I did too!

Never looked back

Phil St. Romain 04-18-2005 08:24 PM

Still no Real Producer for OS X, so to Classic I must go from time to time. Otherwise, I can do everything in OS X now, though it took a year or so to get there.

Norm Nager 04-19-2005 12:01 AM

The only reason I keep Classic around is just in case I ever need to open:

--an old pre-OS X Word Perfect document (more and more unlikely as the years pass by)
--access any data from OS 9 income tax software-generated returns
--look up something in OS 9-era family health/medical CDs from the Mayo Clinic and from the American Medical Assoc. (but rather than launch classic, I've found up-to-date family health info at http://www.medlineplus.gov/, the Mayo Clinic and other reputable medical sites).

Occasionally I have to run Quark 5 since I absolutely refuse to give the Quark Corp another dime of my money to upgrade to 6. And really, since the rest of the graphics community seems to feel the same way, I'm down to running classic maybe once or twice a month. 99.9% of what I do is through InDesign CS.

Other than that, I haven't looked back either. If they don't make for OSX, I don't need it. :)

Check out Illustrator CS 2 details on adobe.com. I'm pretty sure I saw something there about enhanced tracing tools! Can't wait.

ibroughton 04-21-2005 06:37 PM

I doubt classic will even exist soon. So bye bye to old technology no one ever uses any more. If you do use it buy a better machine/software!

tonyo 04-28-2005 04:30 PM

classic?

Haven't fired up classic for anything on either work or home machines for over a year. However, I keep an old 7300/200 downstairs for the kids to surf on and use for reports. However they really only use it to run Diablo and Marathon Durandel!

When I feel like constructing a crossword puzzle, I have a very old cranky PB that does just fine running Cruciverbalist. I'd pay good money to find an OSX crossword constructor that could match up to that program!

There's only one guy in the offiice (out of 9 mac users) that boots Classic more than a few times a month, and that's for Streamline. Am I sensing a trend here? What crawled up Adobe's butt so bad that they can't port Streamline? Judging by these posts, it'd be a hit!
