Check out ThemePark. It is advertised as a way to make themes but it will also edit the resource files used by iTunes.

iChat/Adium
 
I know you said you didn't want to change from iChat, but everything you want can be found in an program called Adium. It allows for the buddy list to slide in and out, be transparent, as small as you like. It's completely customizable. The website is: http://www.adiumx.com. I have used it for a long time now and have had no problems with it. It doesn't have the video or audio chat capabilities iChat has, but it's just as good with messaging and better with customizing.
