Need Grappler 930U SCSI firmware
I like several other people are trying to use XPostFacto to get older PowerMacs to run OSX. The Grappler series PCI cards were perhaps the most popular higher performance cards used in the Power Macs..
Well, Orange Micro is no longer in business, their site is gone, and it does not appear that any of their firmware updates (like the 1.36 version required for OSX) were cached elsewhere (if they are, Google can't find them). If anyone out there has the 1.36 firmware and the downloader, it would sure be nice to post it here, to VersionTracker, or just send me a copy and I'll do the legwork. The file name for this was: update930U0802.img.bin David |
Orange Micro is out of business?
Uh, I just went to their website. Grappler updates are here:

Orange Micro Downloads
Yes, the site is there that advertizes the downloads, but the download site is not responding or available - so we cannot get the referenced updates.

I have it...
give me a couple of days and I'll post the file. I have that SCSI card and the firmware you require. It's somewhere on one of my many hard drives connected to my Power Mac. Once I upload it to my FTP site, I'll post a message here. I'll leave it up on my server for a few days.

I checked the mac drive museum, not there. Mac Driver Museum
Perhaps you should let them know that they need to add the Orange Micro drivers to the museum. |

Ooops, forgot all about this!
I was still subscribed to the email alert for this thread. Man, I completely forgot about it. I am about 90% sure I have it, so I'll TRY to remember to look on my G4 tonight. Good thing I have Spotlight now!
I'll post here with a link to my website to get it once I get a chance. |
Grappler SCSI 906F and Grappler+ Serial Firmware also needed
I'm also looking for some Grappler firmware, for their SCSI/serial card, especially the OS 10.3 updater. If anyone has the firmware, or knows where to find it, please let me know. This is very frustrating, as Orange Micro was a leading Mac provider for a long time. The drivers must exist somewhere!
|
Ok, thanks to Spotlight, I found the OrangeMicro drivers pretty quickly. I uploaded a zip file archive with all of the different firmware binaries, the OS X install package, and the install instructions. Make sure you read the install instructions as what you install depends on what OS you want to use with it.
Click this link to see the directory where it's located: OrangeMicroGrappler930U.zip I'm not going to leave this up forever, so get it while you can. Regards, GG |

Installation help
I noticed I got a few hits from this forum thread on my website, so I thought I'd check in and see how everyone was doing.
The ".bin" files in the zip archive are not compressed files that require expansion, they are firmware binary files and are only used for OS 9 installations, I THINK. In other words, the .bin files are the actual firmware files that you upload to your card via the OS 9 firmware uploading utility which is also in the zip archive. These files are not used for OS X installations. If you are installing for OS X (which you most likely are), then you run "GrapplerFastUltra.pkg" and you will NOT use the .bin firmware files. I have no idea if the OS X installer is supported in Tiger, Panther, or even Jaguar for that matter. If memory serves, I believe the only way I was able to get the card to work was to boot into OS 9 and then run the OS 9 firmware installer and choose the appropriate firmware for my needs. In fact, I don't believe I ever got it to work correctly in OS X, so I just used it in OS 9 to extract all the data off of my SCSI drive, then uninstalled the card forever. I hope this helps. Make sure you read the "Installation Help" thoroughly: "Grappler SCSI 930 Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X SCSI firmware and driver information =================================================================================== August 26, 2002 The included firmware drivers support Mac OS 10.2 (Jaguar). Grappler Flash - This is a Mac OS 9.x flash utility that allows you to use any of the three .bin files below to update your Grappler SCSI 930U. FIRMWARE UPDATES CAN ONLY BE MADE UNDER MAC OS 9. Important: Due to limited ROM space on the Grappler SCSI 930U board, you must decide how you plan to use the Grappler so you can choose the correct firmware for your Grappler. Choose one of the four choices below. 1) NO FIRMWARE UPDATE - I don't care if the Grappler 930 can boot to a SCSI disk under Mac OS X. I just want my SCSI devices to work under Mac OS X. If the Grappler 930 works perfectly with your devices under Mac OS 9.2.2 now, no firmware update is necessary. Simply run the GrapplerFastUltra.pkg installer under Mac OS X to access SCSI devices connected to the Grappler 930. GrapplerFastUltra.pkg is the Mac OS X installer. Double-click on the package file under Mac OS X to install the driver and then restart. The installer places grappler.kext in the Mac OS X System/Library/Extensions folder. 2) Mac OS 9.x Bootable - I only need to be able to boot to a SCSI disk under Mac OS 9.x. Don't care about the boot feature under Mac OS X. U9B135.bin is the Mac OS 9.x boot firmware. This adds support for the newer Mac G4 Quicksilver family. Use this to support a Grappler attached SCSI hard drive as the boot hard drive under Mac OS 9.x. If you wish to access Grappler attached SCSI devices under Mac OS X, use GrapplerFastUltra.pkg to install the Mac OS X grappler.kext extension. GrapplerFastUltra.pkg is the Mac OS 10.x.x driver installer. Double-click on the package file under Mac OS X to install the driver and then restart. The installer places grappler.kext in the Mac OS X System/Library/Extensions folder. 3) Mac OS X Bootable - I need to be able to boot to a SCSI disk under Mac OS X. Don't care about the boot feature under Mac OS 9.x. UXB136.bin is the Mac OS 10.x.x boot firmware. Use this to support a Grappler attached SCSI hard drive as the boot hard drive under Mac OS 10.x.x. If this firmware is used, no Grappler attached devices will be seen in Mac OS 9 unless the "Grappler930U9 Extension" is copied to the Mac OS 9 Extensions folder. Grappler930U9 Extension is the Mac OS 9.x driver. Copy this file into the Mac OS 9 System/Extensions folder then restart your Macintosh. This adds support for the newer Mac G4 Quicksilver family. DO NOT use this extension if the U9B135.bin boot firmware is used. 4) Mac 9.2.2 & OS X Non-Bootable - Don't care about the boot feature under Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.x. I just want to access SCSI devices under Mac OS X or Mac OS 9. UX9NB136.bin is non-boot firmware. This firmware will not boot to any SCSI disk with Mac OS X or Mac OS 9 operating system on it. It will however allow access to SCSI devices under any Macintosh operating system. With this firmware, the Grappler906F9 Extension and GrapplerFastUltra.pkg should not be used." |
Firmware updater?
Anyone know where to get the firmware update utility?
|
Zip file has been updated...flash utility now included
Sorry folks, all this time I thought I had the flash utility in the zip archive but I was very incorrect. I've now added it, so I THINK the zip file now has everything you need to updated your 930U card.
Here's the link again... OrangeMicroGrappler930U.zip |
Grappler won't work with BWG3 + Tiger (both before and after driver install.)
Hi everyone,
Thanks for posting the updater. Unfortunately my mac reported the kext was installed incorrectly. I just double-clicked the .pkg installer and let it do its thing and now it's dead. I'm using the latest version of Tiger on a rev. 1 BWG3 and a Grappler 930U. System profiler doesn't see the Grappler. I'm now considering a firewire to scsi adaptor, ~$100. Anybody want to buy a Linotype Hell Saphir scanner cheap? |
hi everyone-
i too am looking for the updater and flash utility for the grappler 930U. unfortunately this thread is a few months old. i have searched online and found nothing so far. hoping someone still has this thread marked for notification. thanks. |
Did anyone in this thread ever get to download the OrangeMicroGrappler930U.zip file? I appears OrangeMicro.com no longer exists.
When I click on that .zip link it takes me to a page that doesn't have the file. I think hedgeland removed it. So if someone has the latest .zip file from the 9/9/2005 posting, please send me a note at paulsell.don@epa.gov Thanks |
You can get it from The Wayback Machine:
http://web.archive.org/web/200302122...pdatescsi.html Flash it in OS9 with the Grappler Flash utility. The readme explains which .bin file does what. I used a MacOS9 install CD and copied the firmware and flasher utility to a zip disk, as I don't use OS9 normally. Hope this helps! |
