MacAddict Magazine opinion
Just bought a MacAddict magazine. While I was at the grocery store, I passed the magazine rack and it caught my eye. At any rate, when I paid, my bill seemed unusually high so I looked at the receipt and the MacAddict was $7.99! I didn't bother looking at the price when I picked it up initially because I figured it was a magazine--how expensive could it be?
Anyway, after looking at the magazine, I'm sorely disappointed. Not so much by the price, because I honestly wouldn't pay $1.99 for it. It just really is a horrible magazine. The content is really lacking, there are few articles beyond the common sense level, and its full of ads (and a thin magazine anyway). Anybody else ever looked at an issue of this trash? |

Oops, and I just signed up for it after registering my Mac Mini. Sigh... Oh well, it comes with a CD and my subscription is free.
|
For free… It's worth every penny! :)
|
Every once in a while I'll buy one, if I like what's on the cd.
 |
I've gotten the free subscription with each of my last two computers. While 3/4 of the issues are worthless to me (but I thought you computer professionals would like them!) the other few issues had wonderful recommendations for the care and upkeep of your computer or for troubleshooting or problem solving.

$7.99??? over here in ireland we pay €8.99 ( about $11) for that tripe of a magazine. if i'm buying a mac magazine its always MacFormat (€10.68) unless one of the others have a cd i want.

Last time I passed through England(1), I picked up a MacFormat. I loved it! I wish they sold it here in the U.S.A. Here we have MacWorld(2), MacHome(3) and MacAddict(4). There used be be Byte and MacUser(5). The one mag I most miss was Nibble(6).
Don't cha' love footnotes? :D 1) On the way to Germany, 2) Only one I subscribe to, 3) For intermediate users, 4) For the kids, I guess. 5) Both great! May they rest in peace… 6) I'm an Apple ][ user from way back! |

I've been a MacAddict subscriber since issue #6, which I picked up in an airport years ago. Back then, it was one of the best ways to keep up with software updates, as downloading them was painfully slow. Now, with broadband, that's not a problem, but I still almost always find something interesting on their CDs. Their review section is also informative, as is the help/troubleshooting section. These help to offset the junior-high tone, as does the rather inexpensive annual subscription rate.

MacFormat is available in a lot of the big bookstores in the US, but it's absurdly expensive. It's bigger than the other Mac magazines, but I don't know that it's better. Besides, all the advertisers are across the ocean and prices are listed in pounds. :)
Actually, between the info on this web site, the various rumor sites, VersionTracker, and Apple's site, I don't think any of the magazines are worth paying a cent for. The new issues coming out just now might have some of the iLife '05, iWork, and Mac Mini info that we all knew within minutes of Jobs's keynote. I can see the appeal of getting the CD occasionally for folks without broadband, though. |

These days I find most tech magazines are just outdated by the time I see them. I'm a geek, and spend a lot of time around places like this, so by the time you account for printing lead time and shipping, it's been at least a month since whatever they have to say is old news. The only time I read them is on a plane during the segment below 10k feet when you can't use anything electronic.

When I lived in Hong Kong (left in 1997) I used to be subscribed to MacFormat, MacUser and MacAddict magazines. From all three, I enjoyed best reading MacFormat, the articles were interesting and surprisingly well written and I appreciated that they didn't use the typical layout of american magazines like Times or Newsweek, even the paper was of better quality and their CDs were really well done.
I don't subscribe anymore to any of them, but I still buy from time to time, MacFormat or MacWorld magazines. Although I agree with what CAlvarez said above, I find them still interesting for --a rainy day and toilet reading-- and I prefer them instead of most newspapers which I find today full of rubbish. :) |

Ironically, you might want to wash your hands after you use the computer, or you might contaminate your toilet with germs!!
|
That's scary... but pretty much no one other than me touches my iBook keyboard, so maybe it's not so bad.

He checked the logs, and his brother had been running.... LimeWire. (is there a puke smiley?) |
I doubt the veracity of that story... because everyone knows that it takes more than an hour to download anything with LimeWire!

I subscribe to MacFormat, and dad gets MacWorld. I much prefer MacWorld, but hate the fact I get last months copy this month most of the time due to not seeing him to pass it on.
