Can't burn DVD. CD in use.
I'm getting this error when trying to burn DVDs. This happened after updating to 10.3.7 via the Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.7 or just the Mac OS X Update 10.3.7.
Problem is with Powermac G4 with a pioneer superdrive. Upgraded 12 machines and most of them now generate this error when trying to burn DVDs. Please advise. Thanks! /mm |
If you look in Activity Monitor, does it look like there is a process running that may be associated with the DVD burner ?
|
iDVD helper was the only process that I could see that might be related. I quit all processes except those needed for the OS, and still got the same error.
The console log file read: "Burn error: 0x80020040 On of the volumes on the media is still in use. Please advise. Thanks! |
Is that the only line at all that appeared in the slew of logs in Console about your burning error ?
Also, you may want to check in the Terminal for items that may be using your burner (and/or you can post the results here) by typing this command: Code:
lsof -R |
There have been some claims that certain Pioneer superdrive models have not been upgraded correctly to work with 10.3.7. Admittedl, those problems seemed to be about blank discs not mounting correctly, but the root cause may be the same.
Umm - do the blank discs get mounted correctly? Use system profiler to see what model superdrive you've got - and see if those machines with the problems have different drives to those that don't have problems. |
Could you enter the following into Terminal and report on the results?

Zip file with log and processes data

You will find serveral exports of logs and process data in the attached zip file. I exported process lists before DVD insert, after insert, and after failed DVD burn. Thanks for any help!
Please advise. |
There are several error messages mentioning 'pbs' which is the PasteBoardServer that handles copy & paste.
Can you copy & paste okay - e.g. text ? I'm not sure if your process lists included all processes, but I didn't see 'pbs' there. Maybe try the following command (in a Terminal window): ps -axww | grep pbs The other thing I notice is that you seem to have a few other processes running that I don't recognize - I suspect that these are related to other hardware (e.g. USB) that you have connected to your system. As is suggested in the standard troubleshooting steps: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04011205473937 http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=7269 you should disconnect all 3rd-party hardware while troubleshooting. |
I would like you to try something... Its just a trial, so I can't garanty this will work, but at least it can't damage your machine in any way.
I would like you to move the following files out of your Preference folder (/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences) and the restart, just so that they do not interfere with your operations.. You may put them back in afterwards if it doesn't change anything...) com.apple.bomarchivehelper.plist com.apple.disutility.plist com.apple.dvdplayer.plist com.apple.frameworks.diskimages.diskimagesuiagent.plist com.apple.help.plist com.apple.helpui.plist com.apple.helpviewer.plist If the problem does not occur with these files off, , then try putting them back in one at a time to see which one is corrupted... Or you can simply redo the very small amount of config that these files do the next time you access the specific apps they refer to. |
Removed the plist files, rebooted, tried another burn, failed as before. Also tried another brand of DVD-R (even though they burned DVDs successfully before the update with the previous brand tried), same result.
Please advise. Thanks! /mm |
You don't seem to have responded to what I suggested above.
|
Hayne,
Ran the suggested command from the terminal window. Results printed to the screen: 345 ?? Ss 0:00:17 /system/library/CoreServices/pbs 393 std S+ 0:00:01 grep pbs What does this mean? |

Now, how about my other suggestion - removing all 3rd-party hardware and then restarting your Mac? |
Rebooted with only Apple devices attached (mouse, kbd, speakers, monitor) and got same result (Error code 0x80020040) as previously.
I am burning a movie from iDVD now. It did not generate the error message when I clicked Burn DVD. I'll see if it completes without errors. The problem seems to be with the utility that runs when a writable DVD is inserted, assuming it is the same app that runs when you select the DVD icon on desktop and click Burn DVD from Finder. Please advise. Thanks! /mm |
Nope, iDVD generated errors too, though it appeared to be burning the disk.

I don't know what the problem is, but here's what I would try:
1) Unmount all DVDs, CDs, external disk drives, etc. You should now only have your internal drive. 2) Copy & paste the following command in Terminal, then press Return: ls -l /Volumes You should only see one entry in the results - the one indicating your internal disk. If you see other entries and you are sure that you don't have any external drives mounted, these other entries are detritus left over from previous mounts. You should delete these. The way to delete them is with the 'rm' command. But since these other entries are folders, you will need to use the "-rf" option. And you will need to do this via 'sudo' in order to have permission. E.g. suppose there is an entry "/Volumes/foo", then you would delete it with the commands: cd /Volumes sudo rm -rf foo Note that I have specified the above procedure in two steps (first the 'cd' and then the 'rm') - this reduces the chances of catastrophic error. But it is still extremely important that you type in the commands exactly as specified (except of course substituting the name that you see for "foo") - you don't get any second chances when using 'rm -rf' And be sure that the folder you are removing does not belong to any mounted drives - that was why I said to be sure to unmount everything first. |
I couldn't get to it today. Will try tomorrow. Thanks!

kDRMediaBusyErr Disc is busy, usually indicating the volume is unmountable. Errors returned from the Disc Recording framework. All errors returned by the Disc Recording framework will fall into the range of 0x80020000 -> 0x8002FFFF. |
I see the process "diskarbitrationd" posts messages in system.log, but not console.log (at least not here.) And previous posts only showed output from console.log.
Posting system.log messages from the time the dvd is first inserted into the drive and during the burn process might give more info on what's going/not going on. |

Ooooh! So it's not really giving an error message when the burn fails then.
With the blank dvd in the drive, what do you get when you type "hdiutil info" in a Terminal window (It'll help not to have any disc images mounted) Also copy something from the Finder into the dvd, and when the copy process is finished, immediately eject the disc (i.e don't burn) Do you get a 'cannot eject - media in use' error? |

I was asking about the above because I was wondering if the error messages you were getting were concerning the disc image that is mounted when a blank dvd is inserted into the drive, rather than when the dvd is itself burnt.

Also it won't hurt to use the "lsof" command immediately before trying to eject the dvd to see if there are any files still open on "/Volumes/Y" If files are still open (and/or the eject fails) then this would suggest there is an issue with the copying or disc image mounting process. Otherwise I would assume the problem lies with the driver software for the superdrive model you are using. You said previously that some work and some don't. Typing "drutil info" for each machine and comparing results might allow you to determine whether there is a link with the precise model of superdrive installed and whether it burns or not. If you can find a link then calling Apple or your dealer is probably the only way forward. |
Thanks, try to get to it tomorrrow.

Installed Toast
Successfully burned both DVD and CD after installiing Toast (temporary fix), but iDVD again failed to successfully burn a DVD.
Thanks for all your recommendations. I will continue troubleshooting the issue with those suggestions above that I have not tried. I wonder if the 10.3.8 update will fix the issue. Please advise. Thanks! |
