Safari redirects Netscape homepage to Apple

When trying to load the Netscape home page, Safari redirects the browser to Apple's home page. Then Apple redirects to Netscape and back again. This goes on several times until Safari sends an error message that breaks the loop. This happens only in Safari. In IE, the Netscape home page just opens. Any ideas how to fix this?

What URL are you trying to load?
I have no such problem with http://www.netscape.com/
on Safari 1.2.4
What version of Safari do you have?

rotero 01-14-2005 08:15 PM

I can duplicate this problem with Safari 1.2.4 on OS X 10.3.7. My machine is a 1GHz TiBook. Very strange...

The error message reads:

Quote:

Safari can't open the page.

Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://apple.netscape.com/apple.adp”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.

TomMxEdit 01-14-2005 08:31 PM

Any attempt to log on to http://www.netscape.com/ with Safari 1.2.4 and Mac OS 10.3.7 redirects to

http://home.netscape.com/main.adp

which redirects to

http://apple.netscape.com/apple.adp

and then back again to

http://home.netscape.com/main.adp

This happens several times. The error message then comes up:

Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://home.netscape.com/main.adp”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.

Seems apple doesn't want us to log onto the netscape home page (?)

The http://www.netscape.com/ does not work for me. Goes into a re-direct loop for a few seconds and errors out, same as TomMXEdit, with Safari 1.2.4

vancenase 01-14-2005 08:46 PM

>> bump for the loop w/ Safari 1.2.4

TomMxEdit 01-14-2005 08:47 PM

Oddly enough 10.3.7 was working fine until yesterday (January 13), when it started misbehaving.

it's the new Y2K

manic_mouse 01-14-2005 09:13 PM

i have had no such problem... it didnt redirect at all

Las_Vegas 01-14-2005 09:22 PM

I suspect you caught Netscape in the middle of updating their homepage structure at a point where some pages were pointing to each other. It seems to be working fine now.

Turn on cookies in the Security prefs. I bet that fixes the redirects.

Changing Safari's cookies pref doesn't have any effect. I originally had it set to "only for sites you navigate to," but I still get caught in the loop after changing it to "always" and restarting Safari.

Edit: The same things occurs when set to "never."

chabig 01-15-2005 12:43 AM

OK. I was just guessing. I usually keep mine set to "Only from sites you navigate to" and it works OK. But when I change it to never, I'll see some sites cycle like you described.

I have Safari set to "Only from sites you navigate to", and have not changed it. Netscape.com still cycles/redirects and times out. Must be some issue with different ISPs (I like to blame ISPs for everything! :) )

These sites all have more than one server. Most likely one or more of them are responsible for the redirects. Since all the servers may not have them, not all of us will see them.

Even the posts on this thread redirect you! :)

If a site has more than one server, why is that a reason that only some will redirect you?(which ones?) And why wouldn't you be able to get to http://www.netscape.com at least occasionally? And why only Safari?

Aha! I deleted all Netscape cookies, and I can go there now! The solution is not just changing the settings, you also must remove the Netscape related cookies, just go through the list and look for netscape. This list can seem intimidating, mine has several hundred.

Because there is no guarantee that each server is identical to the rest. If deleting cookies does the trick, great! It's still possible for a problem on the server end to send you to the wrong place. ;)

TomMxEdit 01-15-2005 06:56 PM

Yep! Deleting the Netscape cookies fixed the problem for me. Thanks DeltaMac for that great hint. I knew someone on this forum could figure it out.

Safari redirects Netscape homepage to Apple

How does one delete Netscape cookies? Please walk me through the process.

cwtnospam 01-17-2005 03:12 PM

In Netscape 7.1:
Nestcape menu, Preferences, Privacy & Security, click manage Stored Cookies, then Remove All Cookies

DeltaMac 01-17-2005 07:29 PM

That would take care of cookies in the Netscape software, but TomMXEdit was having problems connecting to the Netscape site from Safari, so IN SAFARI, preferences, click on Security, click on 'Show Cookies', scroll through the listing looking for entries with Netscape in the name. Select each and click on delete. No need to remove all the cookies, what would you do with the glass of milk? :D

Yes, well TomMXEdit had already deleted his cookies. Jill was having trouble with Netscape. And Jill, you don't have to delete all your cookies either. Don't eat them though! They're not good for you.
:D

scschulte@tiscal 01-18-2005 12:48 AM

Thanks - the "Remove cookies in Safari" worked!

The removal of the netscape cookies in the security preferences of the Safari browser has enabled me to again log onto the apple netscape page: http://home.netscape.com/main.adp

Thanks very much!

Regards, Steve

Jill's problem is the Netscape website's cookies in Safari. Not Netscape.

To delete the Netscape cookies. Open the file ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist with TextEdit. Do a find for 'netscape.com' and at each place you find it, delete the entire passage from the previous <dict> to the following </dict>. I suspect this behavior is because Netscape is eliminating the 'apple.netscape.com' home page. I've noticed recently that Apple is now supplying their own homepage for new installs resembling a cross between the Main page and Hot News.

ROOKIE MAC 01-18-2005 09:25 PM

Mee Too!

The same redirect happened to me. What is the address for the original netscape/apple site I used to see. It is now lost.

Rookie Mac.

LAS VEGAS

Do you have the new apple/netscape site replacement address?

ROOKIE MAC 01-18-2005 09:45 PM

Las Vegas,

Do You Have Apples New Homepage? I Think You Said It's A Cross Between A Pink Lady And A Golden Delicious?!

Thanks,
Rookie
