Stuffit problems
I tried to open a .sit today without any luck - StuffIt appeared in the dock and kept bouncing without the black triangle appearing underneath it. Also, starting it directly from the Applications folder gives the same result - so it isn't the file in question that is the problem.
I have done the following: 1) Trashed the StuffIt preferences in ~/Library/Preferences and checked /Library/Preferences for files too (there weren't any) 2) Repaired permissions 3) Uninstalled StuffIt (framework included) and installed StuffIt 9 (it was 8 before) 4) Repaired permissions (done after most of the other steps too) 5) Uninstalled StuffIt again and reinstalled it 7) Emptied /Library/Caches and ~/Library/Caches 8) Tried another user 9) Logged out and logged back in, and rebooted and logged back in All my other applications seem to be behaving fine. None have any effect. Anyone have any other ideas? Any other places StuffIt stuffs files? Any preferences it affects? |
Actually it simply seems to take forever to get itself going, which I'm sure it didn't do before. I only noticed this when I FUS'd to another user to do something and came back some time later.
Is there any reason why an application might decide to take ages to get itself going? |
Got the latest version?
|
Yup, freshly downloaded today.
|
Is that when the problem started?
|
Just noticed the same problem today... Stuffit now takes over 2 minutes to open. Googled around with no result.

Maybe a bad copy? Tried re-downloading and re-installing it?
|
I was working on a friend's new 12inch Alumbook today and had the EXACT same problem - tried everything the original poster did, even uninstalling and reinstalling several times to no avail. Console doesn't say anything either.
Anyone? |
No, I downloaded StuffIt 9 because my old copy of v8 appeared not to be working.
It *could* be that my copy of 8 was genuinely broken, and 9 is merely slow. I've redownloaded it several times so it's not a bad copy. |
A thought occurred to me - is Stuff It trying to contact something on the internet at startup? It'd explain why many of us are seeing the same problem.
I tried starting a tcpdump and saw attempts to resolve producturlsupport.com (I think?), a resolution attempt that fails. It'd explain a lot. What does this site do? Why is StuffIt trying to contact it (if that is what is going on - perhaps someone else can confirm what I think)? |
Same here.
When it does come up, go into the preferences, General, and untick 'Allow Version Checking' Starts up instantly then..... |
Genius. Thanks.
I had a skim through the preferences looking for something like that but didn't spot that you could scroll the icons at the top, so I missed it completely. Not a very good piece of interface design in my opinion! |

Thank you stetner, I should've thought of that.
|
Thanx stetner

Got the same behaviour as the other posters, your suggestion solved the problem, thanks!

same as zoltanblum. haven't used stuffit expander for a few weeks actually, came to use it today having just read this thread, and wonders of wonders, it took 5 minutes to open.
straight into the prefs and turned it off auto check :) |
Has anybody alerted Aladdin Systems? Could be just a glitch on there end.
|
I have the same problem, i deleted netfinder and it's lib files. Stuffit wont work, and now i have to (de)compress files with terminal...
|
err, mine bounces for two minutes, then just freezes and i have to force quit it from the dock. Does anybody know what file in the library holds the preferences?

I just noticed this happening over the weekend. I thought at first it was a problem related to Standard 9.01, because I had just recently downloaded it onto my new iBook. But I went back to the Expander version from the restore disks, and still have the problem. I remember the update checking working in the last week or so, hopefully it'll get fixed soon but on the other hand, I don't really care about having the latest version until I get a file the older one won't open, so I'll probably turn off the update checking too.
As a fairly recent convert to MacOS... am I missing out on anything not having the latest and greatest Stuffit? |
I just got off the phone with Allume, they are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it. The only work around is the one stated above.
