sorry, but yet another internet sharing question
i know it's been asked a million times here in these great forums. But I'm gonna ask too cause' i'm stumped. I have a PB w/airport trying to connect my ibook with an ethernet cable and share internet, music, files, etc. Pb has 10.3.7 and ibook has 10.2 (need internet to update everything). The ibook seems to recognize my Pb i think, because it connects to the "server" aka PB with the right ethernet address 192.168.0.1. nothing happens though no internet no shared files i've read almost all the other threads tried numerous configurations.
Any help would be great? thanks in advance :) pm me for a gmail invite if ya want a gmail account |
Can you connect your iBook directly to your wireless router via ethernet? That would be the best solution.
If not, you've really not given enough information to definitively diagnose this, but at a guess, you need to enter the IP address of an external DNS server in System Preferences > Network > TCP/IP tab > DNS Servers. Trevor |
thanks trevor. I'm actually not using a router i'm using a airport connection for my PB so i don't know the about the router. I'm just trying to connect my PB and my ibook both to the internet. Powerbook-airport to ibook-ethernet with an ethernet cable. i thought all i had to do was turn on internet sharing airport to built in ethernet but that hasn't worked yet.i also want to share files between cpu's so i tried turning on personal file sharing. also no luck. firewall off.
am i missing a step or is something not turned on? any help would be great. |
I think I know what you're trying to do, and it can be done, but I've never done it, so I can't say how.
The consensus on other threads has been that you're better off getting a router (about $50) and going ethernet to the router from Airport, ethernet from the iBook to the router, and Airport from the Powerbook to the Airport Base. This way you don't have to have both laptops running for the one at the end of the chain to have internet access. |
thanks for the response. I thought it could be done. i've read alot of the other threads and it seems alot of people want to do it, some succeed and some dont. I just dont get it though what's the point of "Internet sharing" then. all i wanted to do was "route" my wireless connection from my powerbook to my ibook g3 dual usb (which i dont think can accept new airport cards) or can it? via ethernet. I just wanted to update my ibook quicker than dowloading all the updates, then putting them on my external hd, etc. etc. If it can't be done easily, i guess i'll get a usb network extender. i thought it wasn't that hard, i guess i was mistaken. Any more help greatly appreciated.

I don't have Airport, so I can't duplicate your problem. In the Sharing Panel, uner Internet, it says:
Share your connection from: (Button here to chose etherne/airport) To computers using: Ports Then there's a button called Airport Options. What are the options? |
the options are ( network name, channels, WEP stuff-password,username(which i dont need).i'm trying to route from airport to ethernet and the airport options aren't available when going from airport to ethernet. they're available when going from ethernet to airport. thanks for checking out my problem.
|
the iBook will not be using any Airport settings. It will not be connecting via Airport (wireless). It would be using Ethernet (built-in), so swap your Network connection to Built-in Ethernet, select your TCP/IP to 'using DHCP", click the 'Apply' button, and watch this window to see if your settings show in the IP address, mask and router boxes. Should show some settings in a few seconds. If you see settings, then you should be good. If NOT, then re-check sharing settings on your powerbook, make sure that internet sharing through ethernet is turned on.
|
thanks deltamac for the response. it seems like its working the ethernet IPS are almost the same PB is 192.168.2.6 and Ibook is 192.168.2.3 and on my ibook in network-tc/ip-router both router #'s are the same. But still nothing. are my settings on my ibook wrong maybe?
|
Can you ping an address? Ping Yahoo.com from the computer that has internet and then ping the same ip number on the other computer.
|
If you can ping an address (as opposed to a url) you have a DNS issue. You'll want to put your DNS info into the Newtork, Ethernet, tcp/ip settings
|
if you mean: type my ibooks IP into my powerbooks browser and expect to hear a sound. Then this is what happened:
Cannot Load Address Temporarily unable to connect to 192.168.2.3:80: Operation timed out If you don't then i don't know how to ping my ibook. I've heard of "ping" but never used it and don't know how to do it. :( PS: yahoo worked fine on PB w/internet and on ibook nothing. |
Go to Applications:Utilities and open Network Utility
Click on Ping button Ping Yahoo.com or Ping 216.109.112.135 (the address that showed when I pinged yahoo) Both need to work. When you ping Yahoo.com the system looks up the address on your DNS server and connects to that (216.109.112.135) |
i put the DNS server # on both PB and ibook.
Oh here are my sharing prefs: personal web and personal sharing are on firewall off internet sharing on from built in ethernet to built in ethernet |
Yes, but could you Ping? Both an address and a URL?
|
tried ping:
--- 216.109.112.135 ping statistics --- 10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max = 45.446/584.814/5367.88 ms i assume that means it worked on PB but on ibook it : --- 216.109.112.135 ping statistics --- 10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss i also assume this means it didn't work |
both on PowerBook. Neither on IBook
|
Try to ping the IP address for your Powerbook, from your iBook. Same procedure, but use 192.168.2.6
If that also does not have good connection, then try a different ethernet patch cable. Are you connecting directly from the PowerBook to the iBook? Depending on the age of both systems, you may need a 'cross-over' ethernet cable, or using an ethernet hub/router between the systems. |

tried that, it seemed to work i guess:
--- 192.168.2.6 ping statistics --- 10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max = 0.443/2.606/14.659 ms all the numbers before that were all ( 64 bytes from 192.168.2.6 with varying "ms" ) its my roomates ethernet cable. dont know much more than that. both cpus are fairly old but still work great: PB g4 400 mhz 10.3.7 256 ram CD-ROM/DVD-ROM ( 1st gen titanium i think Ibook g3 600 mhz 10.2 384 ram (dual usb model) |
So it looks like the problem is with the Internet Sharing setup. Just to be sure, you did click on the Start button in Sharing Preference, right?
|
i'll try buying a crossover cable. does it look like i setup everything ok? if so then ill get the cable, if not then i might as well get the (Belkin F5D6050 Wireless USB Network Adapter) for $30. which would seem more logical. But i did here belkin sucks.
|
personal web sharing on
personal file sharing on firewall off internet sharing on ethernet to ethernet (this is what i was told to put as) Currently |
what should my ibooks sharing prefs' be ?
|
new development ! I can mount my PB now on the ibook. Still no internet though.
|
Ok, so now try turning off internet sharing and then turning it back on.
Your ethernet cable is probably fine. |
im going out to drink now. ill be back in few hrs.
thanks for all your help everyone :) |
Ah, to be in college again...
:o |
i wish i was still in college. i've been out for a year. I just like alcohol and women. :D Anyways as I was saying I turned it off, then on still no internet connection. Maybe my ibook sharing and network prefs ?
|
When you've been out for a lot longer than that, chances are that one of thos women will have decided that you shoudn't be going out drinking on a Saturday night. Especially to a place where there are lots of single women!
Anyway, back to the problem: You've got cable or dsl going ethernet to the Airport Hub, then Airport to the iBook, then ethernet to the Powerbook, right? What are the tcp/ip settings for each laptop? Address: subnet: router: DNS servers: Search Domains: |
Also, do you need to connect using PPPoE?
|
I'm not connected to a (router, hub.etc) i'm connected to a wireless network (my neighbors). theirs two plugs/wires connected to my laptop right now (power plug, and ethernet cable - to ibook to share). My ibook settings are:
sharing first: personal file sharing on personal web sharing on firewall off internet sharing on network settings: using DHCP 192.168.2.4(provided by DHCP server) subnet mask 255.255.255.0 router 192.168.2.1 DHCP Client ID is Optional DNS servers:192.231.221.1 Im not using PPOE appletalk off no proxies on File sharing works. I can mount my PB on my Ibook fine. Yet no internet connection? |
Ok, so it looks like you're connecting from the iBook through the Powerbook to the Airport ok, because you've got an ip address. What I'm thinking is that there is either something wrong with the NAT on the Airport (don't have one, so I can't help there) or maybe the Powerbook is doing PPPoE. If it is, they you would need to do it too.
What are the Powerbook's ip settings? |
well in network status both airport and built in ethernet have green lights.
built in ethernet: using DHCP w/ manual address:192.168.2.3 subnet:255.255.255.0 no router because i'm wirelessly connected DNS servers: 192.231.221.1 IPv6 - auto no PPoE appletalk off - should it be on? no proxies ethernet ID: automatic Sharing : personal file sharing on personal web sharing on firewall off internet sharing on: sharing built in ethernet connection to cpu's using built in ethernet. By the way thanks for all your help I really appreciate it. :) |

in a earlier post someone wrote it should be ethernet to ethernet. So I assumed that was right. (And yes I know when you assume you make an ass out of you and me) :) I originally had internet sharing: airport to built in ethernet but like I said I was told that was wrong.
Just did it while typing this. That was it. I should have never 2nd guessed myself. Thank you very much cwtnospam. You are the Man or Woman. I assume man. :D |
Glad I could help.
So how'd it go last night? Us married guys have to live vicariously. |
