Mail 1.3.9 can send, but not receive mail. WHY?
Trying to get macmail to work. It works somewhat, can send, but not receive. Here are the facts of the case.
1) running os x.3.7 and macmail 1.3.9 on a G4ti. (I have 2, on the other, running 10.2.8 and macmail 1.2.5, everything works fine). 2) when I hit ''get mail" the program begins connecting to server, stays there for longer then it should, and then quits. 3) CONSOLE reveals the following message "Mail[335] - [POP3Connection fetchMessages:] failed: (null)" 4) error message on mail.app reads "The attempt to read data from "mail.mydomain.net" failed." 5) I have trashed my mail prefs and repaired permissions 6) Firewall on OS is OFF 7) connecting to internet via airport and wireless router connected to PC 8) internet works fine -- mail.app is the problem-- again, can send, but not receive. 9) Must use SSL and SMTP to access mail email via mail.app. Anyone have any advice? THANK YOU! |
There is some problem with the POP server. Either
1. you have the POP servername set incorrectly, or 2. you have the authentication for the POP servername set incorrectly, or 3. your username and password for the POP servername are set incorrectly in your e-mail client, or 4. there is a problem with the POP server itself--such as your name and username are incorrect in it's settings. Hello. I do not think that the problem is in this list.
My username and password are correct, and the POP server has my correct info, if it did not, then I could not check email on my other G4. Nor could I send email, correct? |

If you have it working on your other computer, compare all settings in Mail (including the Advanced tab on Accounts which is where the incoming settings are). What other differences exist between the computer that works and the one that doesn't? |
Yes, thank you derekhed.
The outgoing mail is through an SMTP server. The incoming mail is through a POP3 server. The two do not need to have any relationship to each other at all, although they may sometimes be given the same domain name (mail.someserver.com for example). If the two servers are given the same name, different applications will be listening at different ports--typically SMTP is on port 25, whereas POP3 is on port 110. So, as derekhed mentioned, check not only your username and password, but also Mail Preferences > Accounts > Advanced tab. Insure that the port is at the default 110, that Authentication is correct for this POP server, that the account is enabled, that "Use SSL" box is checked appropriately for this POP server, etc. Trevor |

Have you tried setting up mail using another account on the same computer? That might help you pin down whether it's a system level or user-level problem.
|
Yep. Tried it. No dice.

The only differences between the 2 computers are ram, diskspace, and the computer on which email is working has an older version of os.x and mail. They are both G4 17" ti powerbooks. One is just out the box and this is the one on which I am having problems. The older one is about 2 years old. |

Interesting. Please post the version of the OS and Mail for each.

Did Mail ever work on that machine ? or has it always been like this ?

Can you telnet into those ports?
telnet mail.mydomain.net 995 Or whatever the port number is you're using? I'm wondering if somehow a rule got added to your firewall, even without it being turned on in the gui. Does sudo ipfw list return anything other than allow ip from any to any? |

If you have your Panther cds, I ould recommend trying to re-install Mail using the program called Pacifist. Other issue may be that its something at system level that prevents the mail protocols from working... But start with Re-Installing Mail...
Also, before re-installing, could you look i your Console under /var/logs and post the log for when you last tryied to use mail... May provide some clue. |
Having the same problem.
I am having the same problem. Running 10.3.7 and 1.3.9 (v619) - I can send mail, but not receive it.
However, my situation is a little different, until a few days ago, mail worked FINE. Now, it seems to work about 20% of the time. First it says it is connecting, then says it is fetching mail, and then says my password is no good after it times out. It won't let me connect ack to the server (due to bad password) for about 15 minutes, and then it will connect and do the same exact thing over again. I guess it is timing out, but don't see any options to change this part. Here's the interesting part, I downloaded PowerMail 5.1 and used the same settings on that client, and it works fine. Wouldn't bother me at all if it wasn't a trial version. I figure why pay for something, when I should have something that works already. |

The 00010 divert 8668 ip from any to any via en1 part is dropping any packets coming to your computer on that port, could cause the problem. |

Can you use a port scan (included in Applications/Utilities/Network Utility) and hit either of those ports? On my mail server doing a port scan from 995 to 995 responds
