Photoshop CS Crash
 

I have this problem on most of our Macs at work, Photoshop crashes when the users try to copy and paste text from Entourage 2004 to Photoshop CS. This is a function they use everyday. Entourage does not crash, but you have to restart the Mac to get Photoshop restarted. All of the Macs are 10.3 and I have done all the updates.
If they use the simply text editor as go in between it is fine, no crash, I am guessing it is the text format from Entourage that CS can’t handle.
I have called MS & Adobe but they offered no help.
I have changed the default text on Entourage but that didn’t help.
If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated, because I am out of ideas.

You could start by looking at the detailed error messages by launching the "Console" application (under /Applications/Utilities). Look for the point where it says that PhotoShop crashed and refers to a crash log. Press the Logs button (top left) and go into the ~/Library section to see the crash log.
Post it here (maybe attach it as a plain text file) and show us the error messages.

If this is just a bug in PhotoShop, you might need to work around it. E.g. you could copy text into TextEdit and then into PhotoShop. Boring yes, but better than a crash.
But maybe the error messages will give us a clue as to what is going wrong and we can suggest a fix.

Hmm, the first time I tried pasting from Entourage to PS, PS did hang. A force quit of PS was necessary.

The second time I tried it, I copied the text I wanted, quit Entourage, then pasted sucessfully to PS.

The crash log shows that it is crashing in the Apple text-handling function "ATSUGetAttribute". That doesn't suggest too much in the way of possible solutions except the usual in cases of text problems: check for corrupted fonts.

I found the following page where someone else has problems with PS crashing at startup at the same place (ATSUGetAttribute):

One last piece of information, if I copy from a plain text email (from Entourage) it is fine, no crash.
Therefore it is the format that the text are bring over with them from a Rich text or HTML email (from Entourage).

Not sure if that helps but it might.

How do I check for corrupted fonts?

One way is with the 3rd-party utility "FontDoctor X".
Google will find you other tools for doing this.

Misery loves company.
We have the exact same problem here at our newspaper. Captioning for photos often comes in via email body text from freelancers, with their JPEG attachment. We then need to select that captioning info and place it into PhotoShop's IPTC caption field. The issue is definitely with Entourage and perhaps one of the fonts installed by Office at first use of the suite as suggested above here. When Apple's Mail program is used instead to connect to our Exchange Server (v6), the same email and text will copy fine to the clipboard and PhotoShop will launch without issue. If formatted text is copied-to-clipboard in Entourage, the user must first go to Text Edit (or other similar), paste that text and the re-select and copy again to be able to open PhotoShop successfully.

Update I removed all MS office font from an apple computer and still had the problem.
Entourage causes CS Photoshop to crash, we have not found a solution yet.

I love Photoshop CS, but it is the crashingest program on my otherwise stable Mac G5 2Ghz (with 2.5 gigs of original RAM).

Here are the fixes I have used:

Delete the Workflow folder located at /Library -> Application Support -> Adobe/

Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.

Do a search for both Photoshop and .plist. Trash the files that show up.

It still crashes, about once a week, but at least it runs for a few solid days.

I am on a G4 Mac using 10.3 with 1.5gb ram and plenty of
disc space. I have experienced frequent crashes with the Photoshop CS
File-Browser. Generally when viewing folders with many images within them.
I have read most of the posts related to this issue and still have not resolved the problem. Currently and am reverting to Photoshop 6 in classic for all my work which is stable but working as a professional photographer this situation is far from ideal.

Also reinstalled the photoshop software and the system software but the issue remains. Any clues from anyone appreciated.

I tried the solutions offered by "bo" found no related folders in the positions he suggested.

About 3 times a week, I'll just go from reading emails in Entourage to clicking on an image that I've been working on in PS, and it just quits. It dawned on me today after reading this forum... I had just copied an email and put it into a task window in Entourage, and then I tried to go back to PS... so I bet that's it! If I quit Entourage after I copied and pasted, and then went back to PS, I bet it would work...

Not a solution, but a work-around I might be able to get used to... if there's truly no fix...

Or maybe, just copy something else (e.g. from Finder) before going into PS.

Count us in for the Entourage copy paste problem too. As a large corporate client we have some pull with Adobe. I'm calling them now.

I have been dealing with the problem by having all my Apple Designers use the TextEdit as a go in between.
They copy their text from Entourage to TextEdit to CS, it is an extra step but beats crashing.

Hope that helps, but if any one finds a better fix please post it.

I just tested the 'select-text-in-Entourage-and-paste-in-Photoshop' crash issue with PS-CS2 and Entourage v11.2.1 and did not experience a crash. My last interaction with this issue was with PS-CS and Entourage v11.0.1, so it seems either CS2 became insensate to MS clipboard nonesense, or MS cleaned up their act with Entourage 11.2.1.
