SIT file will not open!
Hi there,
I have just bought a imac G5 1.6ghz running OSX 10.3.5. I am having no luck trying to install programmes. I downloaded a programme which was supplied in a .SIT file I try double clicking on it and I get the message: "The application does not appera to be compressed or encoded. The application Stuffit Expander might be able to open this file. Would you like to try opening the file using Stuffit Expander.app? I click 'Try', the box disapears for a second and then comes back, without having done anything - asking the same question. Can anyway give any suggestions of what to do? Thanks |
Sounds like a corrupt file. Try downloading it again.
If you're downloading stuff from usenet, this is common, and you'll need a program like UnrarX to restore the PAR files. |
Which version of Stuffit Expander are you using? If I recall correctly, version 8.0 had a problem related to file permissions and the problem was fixed in version 8.0.1.

Also there is a version 9 out... Have had no issues with it...
|
I am using version 7.0.3
I only bought the mac on Friday and it is a G5 imac Is it free to download the latest version? If yes, could you post a reliable place to get it from? Thanks |
Here's the link for StuffIt Expander version 9.0 and they state that it's free.

Yes, Stuffit Expander is free, but unfortunately it is only available in a bundle with shareware programs. Download the whole thing and delete the rest of the... lovely software.
|
OK, downloaded version 9 and it still doesn't work.
I get the same message as I wrote in the first post |
Here's a last resort. Sometimes OS X or a program insists on interpreting a file by its extension instead of looking at what's really in the file. Try changing the extension to .bin or .hqx and then throw it at StuffIt again. See if that helps.
|
Also, launch StuffIt Expander so that you get the drag & drop window displayed. Drag the file to this window.
If it doesn't open the archive, odds are that the file is corrupt. |
The new Stuffit is suffix-sensitive. Try removing the ".sit" from the end of the file name - it should unStuff itself. Works the opposite way as well, but it stuffs, zips, whatever, the original file without making a copy.
You could also "get info" on the .sit file and make sure that Stuffit Expander is selected in the "Open With" pane. |
I tried all of the above tips but with the same negative result.
It would seem that the file is indeed corrupt. So I've binned it. Thanks a lot everyone for your help. |
I have same problem with Stufflt expander v9, but i have another message:
" The Application Stufflt Expander has unexpectedly quit. The system and other applications have not been affected. Would you like to submit a bug report to Apple ? ". How can i solve this problem and is there another application can expand my .sit files ?? Thanks |
First, check that you have the most recent version of Stuffit Expander.
If so, you should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04011205473937 http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=7269 http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html In particular, be sure to try logging in as a different user to see if the problem exists there. |
Another option would be to reinstall Stuffit Expander.
|
Thanks ..
But i need another application to expand that files .. is there one doing that ? |

dmg files will mount automatically in OS X allowing you to run the installer from the image.
|
Thanks all..
The problem solved by uninstall Stuffit Expander v9 and install Stuffit Standerd v 8.2 .. But still nobody answer me about is there another application can expand .sit files ?? |

And there might not be any other app since .sit format is a proprietary format, so would require reverse engineering to find out about it. |
