But if your xbox 360 console is too far away from your router the only other option is buying a £60 wireless 'g' adapter from microsoft.
That and setting up internet sharing on your mac, which doesn't cost a penny. |

These adapters plug into the ethernet port on the XBox 360 and translate to wireless without requiring any driver. You do have an easy setup to do with the adapter attached to your computer first, but that's pretty straightforward. Quote:
Really, you will be much happier if you get a real wireless router if you don't already have one, and an ethernet to wireless adapter for your XBox. Trevor |
Got it to work
OK so for more modern users of these instructions (using snow leopard, for example) there are a couple of things to keep in mind for this to work.
#1 - on the xbox, your DNS server is, in fact, your router IP address. also make sure you enter the router address under DNS server in your 'ethernet' settings. #2 - make sure you manually assign an IP to your 'ethernet' connection, then use that IP for the gateway IP, and that IP+1 for your xbox IP. #3 - there is an element of magic to get this to work. I had to deactivate and activate my 'ethernet' connection in network settings a couple of times before it worked. My actual mac's internet connection also went out a couple of times. No idea.....just glad it finally clicked. |
Hi, i was wondering if any of you could help me?? I'm stuck as my setup's different to practically everyone in this thread (a few people seem to have the same but never got a response).
Basically, i'm in uni halls, and our internet is wired from an ethernet socket on the wall. However, we have to sign in each session to be able to actually get on the internet, and as the 360 doesn't have an internet browser, there's no way we can just connect it to the wall and sign in. we also can't sign in on the computer and then swap the cable over because they have different ip addresses. However, i do happen to have a wireless adapter for my 360, so would like to use the following setup: Internet socket ---(ethernet)---> Macbook ---(airport/network adapter) ---> 360 I've got internet sharing turned on, on my macbook, and can connect to my friends pc's if we change one of the settings (network type i think) to shared, but there is no option to do this on the 360. Does anybody know a way to work around this?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! |
I've been having intermittent problems with Xbox live and my MacBook for a while now. I finally get it working and it seems fine for a couple of months and then it just stops working. It is very confusing as none of the network settings have actually changed. However I may have found a remedy. I hope by sharing it on here it might solve the problem for other people too because I know how frustrating it is.
So here is my setup: Sky BroadBand (UK ISP) Wireless Router -> MacBook Via Airport -> Xbox 360 via Ethernet The settings that I use on the Xbox are as follows: IP Settings: Manual IP Address: 192.168.2.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.2.1 DNS Settings: Manual Primary DNS Server: 68.105.28.11 Secondary DNS Server: 68.105.29.11 Make sure internet sharing is enabled in the Sharing preferences and you should be good to know. Now if (and in my case when) Xbox live starts to fail to connect when none of the network settings have been changed, try disabling internet sharing and re-enabling it in System Preferences. This seems to rectify the problem. Hope this helps someone out there. |
using the internet sharing option also works
So I was trying to figure out how to connect my xbox to a router across the room and I realized that my brother already had a wireless dongle for the xbox. So I decided to try internet sharing.
It's actually very simple. 1. Turn on internet sharing (system preferences>sharing) 2. Select to share connection from ethernet to airport 3. go to airport options and under tcp/ip change to manual and input these numbers instead IP=10.0.0.1 Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0 4. Open the network preferences on the xbox 5. connect to the wireless (if you made a password you'll have to enter it) 6. change the IP setup to manual and put them in this order IP = 10.0.0.2 subnet = 255.255.255.0 Gateway = 10.0.0.1 then Change the DNS to Primary = 10.0.2.1 Secondary = 10.10.10.100 And then you should be all set to connect. It works pretty well and now you can also use your ipad, Iphone or Ipod touch without having to purchase a wireless router. Peace all, Enjoy |
