XBox Live - Internet Sharing

Hello,

I have a reasonably unique scenario. I'm trying to network my Xbox Live via Internet Sharing. I'm not much of a networking person but I'll try to explain as best as I can. My network runs of SBCGlobal DSL service.

Modem to Router:
<SBC Global Modem> ---cat 5--- <Linksys 614 Wireless G router>
Router to Mac:
<Linksys 614 Wireless G router> (((Wireless through Airport Card))) <Dual G4>
Mac to Xbox:
<Dual G4> ---cat 5--- <Xbox>

I have internet sharing set up correctly through the System Preferences under the Sharing folder.

I know it's ghetto...let's try to get past the crappy setup I have which forces me to use Internet Sharing. First off, I know my cable is fine. The cable is detected properly between the Mac and the Xbox, so we can skip the cable during this troubleshoot.

My router address is: 192.168.1.1 (default linksys address)

My AirPort (which is connected fine) has the following settings (Using DHCP):
IP:192.168.1.4
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router:192.168.1.1

My Built-in Ethernet (which is flagged with a yellow status icon) has the following settings (Using DHCP)
IP:169.254.12.138
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Router: blank

Xbox:
IP Addresses: Automatic
DNS Servers: Automatic
PPPoE Settings: Off
Advanced: Automatic

-------------------------------

So basically I have internet sharing on now and when everything is plugged and ready to go, when I attempt to connect to Xbox live, the Xbox begins its process of determining its network settings.

o Cable (checks fine)
o IP Address (fails)
o DNS (doesn't get this far)
o Xbox Live! (doesn't get this far)

So what am I doing wrong? There have been a couple of threads on the issue but no one seems to know enough to have a working configuration. There have been some talk about using Brickhouse or IPNetShareX. IPNetShareX doesn't open for me under 10.3.6. Brickhouse works but I haven't a clue what to do with it.

Any information at all would be helpful.

Thanks,
Jerome

I just did the same thing (substitute powerbook for G4) for my brother. The xbox seems to have difficulty obtaining an address from the dhcp server that is started on the Mac as part of the 'share my internet' process. I don't think it's necessary, but I set the ethernet port to "Configure IPV4: Off". I then started internet sharing and checked the IP assigned to the ethernet port (in terminal.app, type "ifconfig en0" [zero, not a capital-o] and it will return the info about the config of the built-in ethernet. On my machine it returns "inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255". I believe OSX always uses 192.168.2.1 but it would be best to check rather than just assuming.

On the xbox, set
IP Configuration: Manual
IP: 192.168.2.2
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router/Gateway: 192.168.2.1 [or the address returned from the ifconfig command above if it's different]

DNS Configuration: Manual
[enter the IPs of the dns servers provided by SBC] They should be in the documentation and likely in your router config. If you can't find them, type "dig" in terminal.app and after a bunch of text scrolls by, you'll have a line starting with "SERVER" near the bottom, the IP address in that line is the DNS server your computer is using, so you can enter the same in the xbox settings.
PPPoE Settings: Off
Advanced: Automatic

You should now be able to connect to xbox-live.

hi
excuse my ignorance but can you explain more about configuring the ethernet output? i have looked everywhere but can't find the settings for the ethernet port. maybe then i can get my xbox live connected as its driving me mad!!

also can you explain

DNS Configuration: Manual
[enter the IPs of the dns servers provided by SBC]

i don't have a router just a usb modem. thanks

WaydeK 11-20-2004 12:10 PM

right i've had a good bash at trying to fix this but am still getting nowhere! i've turned off IPv4 and set IPv6 to automatic. i've switched on internet sharing and ticked share with built in ethernet. i've then set my xbox as above

ip 192.168.2.2
mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.2.1

and i got my dns server as above and entered that into primary and alternative dns.

i still get check cable. also the ethernet cable is red and it says cable is not plugged in. i used this ethernet cable at work to see was it ok and it worked. is there anything i could be missing. please help!! i'm mad to get online and play halo 2 online!!

I've read somewhere just recently that you need to connect the xbox and mac with a crossover cable. Once you do that and manually give the DNS IP address, then it should work.

Hope it helps...

Still no joy

I understand all that was written and have tried it all but the xbox still refuses to find my IP address.

The closest i came was when i entered the "ifconfig en0" number into the IP address and the xbox responded by telling me that the IP address was already in use.

This is my network:

cable modem--->Airport Express(via ethernet)

Airport Express--->iBook G4 & PowerPC G4

PowerPC G4---->xbox live (via ethernet cable)

The internet works on both mac's. I connected the xbox straight to the modem and it worked perfectly. It's only when i try to do it via the built-in ethernet connection(on either ibook or PowerPC) that i get problems.

Also which Settings am i meant to be looking at for the IP,Mask & Gateway numbers? The Airport internet settings or Network Settings under the system preferences?

I'll try to phone the apple tech support tommorrow(sunday) to see if they can help but i doubt it. So any response would be v.much appreciated.

Connecting to XBOX Live

Hey, I was able to get a working connection using my iBook (early 2004) and Internet Sharing. I used the hints posted by Perrin. However, I didn't mess around with my Ethernet port at all. All I did was connect a regular ethernet cable, no need for a crossover cable, from my ethernet port to the port on the Xbox. Checked the IP assigned to the ethernet port (in terminal.app, type "ifconfig en0" [zero, not a capital-o] and it will return the info about the config of the built-in ethernet. On my machine it returns "inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255". I believe OSX always uses 192.168.2.1 but it would be best to check rather than just assuming.
This is how my Xbox looks (thanks Perrin):

Also, this is what I did. I went into my iBook and found the MAC address my airport was using and coppied that MAC address to the address mapping feature in the Xbox. That said and done I was able to connect without any further problems.

Just make sure you are using the IP, Mask, and Router that terminal returns when you ask it per instructions above.

rjraimo 12-05-2004 10:52 PM

Where to look

I usually find most of my information for the IP, Router, etc. in the System Preferences, Network, Show: Airport, TCP/IP. This is where I got my information, plus from Terminal.app to set up my Xbox.

Thank you!!!!

Thank you everyone especially the lost poster. It worked! It must have been the only combo i didn't try :-)

I am up and running and my Gamertag is "BIGBOOTS". Hit me up anytime on Halo 2, pro evo or burnout. Cheers again

More Xbox Live Problems

I too am having major problems with Xbox live.

I have followed all the instructions in this thread but am getting DNS errors. I have even tried turning off the firewall.

I have USB Modem > G3 iMac 10.3.7 > Crossover > Xbox

The first two steps work using the info from the thread but the third gives errors when using the info from my ISP Wanadoo!

HELP!!!

Xbox live support doesn't support Macs & Wanadoo help line doesn't support Xbox live,

I might have to buy a £60 router... :(

Edit: Right - by putting the Mac's address as the DNS server (192.etc) I can get past that part but it still won't let me on to the live sysatem to register!!

boodaman 03-07-2005 11:11 PM

wow

wow perrin thanks a lot, very simple instructions, and it worked!.

XBOX 360 Live

I'm having the same problem.
I want to connect my XBOX 360 to my IMAC G5 trough the XBOX wireless network adapter and the airport on my MAC.
Do I need something more?
My XBOX connects to the mac but when he gets at IP address i get the message failed.

When I put "ifconfig en0" i get the following
inet 81.82.159.138 netmask 0xfffff800 broadcast 81.82.159.255
ether 00:11:24:ce:d0:be
So it's a lot different than what i read here (maybe cause I'm from Europe???)
When I put DIG I get SERVER: 195.130.131.3#53(195.130.131.3)

Can someone guide me trough this proces, I've tried a lil bit of everything by now.

Thanks in advance

hey big I was having the same problem (on ps2).
I put up a how to on my website. This thread helped me a little, but I needed to do some other stuff to make my connection work. Hope it helps!

(you're probably going to want to set your DNS to manual)

janice52 01-10-2006 10:14 PM

Thanks all! This thread plus the collegegamer website helped me get my 13 year old son up and running on xbox live. He thinks I'm a pretty smart Mom--for now.

We have an airport network (snow) with an emac and macmini sharing a DSL connection.
I followed Perrin's suggestions and the instructions on the website but made little headway at first. Turning on internet sharing on the mini was a good suggestion.

What I didn't understand but figured out through trial and error was that the ending numbers in the IP addresses and in the DNS numbers changed depending upon where the xbox was in the network chain. The IP address on the mac mini was 192.168.2.2 but when I entered 192.168.2.3 as the IP Address in the xbox we made progress in our configuration. When I entered 205.171.4.65 and 205.171.5.65 as the DNS server when I manually configured DHCP on the mac mini we were finally able to log on.

Just sharing what worked for us in case it helps someone else. Thanks again.

hi im 16 and i dont know technical things. i have an xbox 360 and it says IP failed when i connect and i have got as faf as internet sharing

EtC 06-17-2006 09:15 PM

HI, I have also a problem connecting to XBL through my Mac.

I tried following the instructions on the thread but the connection gets stuck on IP Address verification. However, I was able to get past that by playing around with my Ethernet settings, but it still gets stuck on DNS, here is what I've done so far:

I manually changed my Ethernet settings to:

IP Address: 83.141.64.193
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 83.141.64.193

In the Xbox360 settings I entered the IP address my service provider gave me, and the above settings for everything else. For DNS settings I entered the ones from my Service Provider as well, I also entered those DNS settings in my Ethernet setting. This gets me past IP, but it still gets stuck on DNS.

If I connect dirrectly to the modem the connection works fine.

The ethernet cable I'm using is the one that came with my Premium Xbox 360.

Can someone please help?

Alias667 11-19-2006 07:08 AM

I am having a similar problem to EtC, i have connected the xbox to my mac via the supplied ethernet cable and am sharing my airport connection a belkin 54g router.

The IP resolves fine, it just always gets stuck on DNS. Ive tried the DNS settings from my router , listed as primary and secondary DNS and ive also tried the server line from dig, which just gives me the addy of my router - it obviously isnt forwarding DNS requests... any suggestions ?

posti 11-28-2006 09:25 PM

iam having a problem too, i have connected the xbox360 to my xp.

The IP resolves fine, it just always gets stuck on DNS. i tried almost everything but still i can't get pass the DNS.

tcurtin 12-17-2006 04:33 PM

Another tip

I was having some problems too, but found a solution.

In my case, I have a Belkin router, and the router's ip (and the ips of computers connected to it, including the ibook via airport express) is 192.168.2.xxx

When you turn off "configure by ipv4" in the ethernet settings, the ibook gives the ethernet port the address 192.168.2.1 - the conflicts somehow with the normal network. Here's the fix I used.

ibook:
network control panel
Show: Built-In Ethernet
TCP/IP tab:
Configure IPv4: Manually
IP Address: 192.168.3.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.2.1 (note that this is the address of your home router, and the same setting your airport uses)
DNS Servers: copy these from your router/service provider as indicated in the other hints

now on the xbox:
IP Settings: Manual
IP Address: 192.168.3.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.3.1
DNS Settings: Manual
Primary DNS Server: (see your internet service provider. 192.168.3.1 might work)

I'm sure you could substitute the 192.168.3 for any number > 3 in all of the above and be fine, but 3 got me up and running.

Enjoy!

same same but different -- pppplease HELP

I've been trying for days. My xbox can't seem to get past the IP test. My usual error is "Your gateway did not respond to a network request".

I have a wireless/airport connection with a Linksys WRT54G router to a Powerbook G4 running OSX 10.3.9. My internet runs fine and I have a strong signal.

(let me just mention that when I tried this with a wireless connection through a PC laptop, it worked fine, so I don't think it's my wireless router, it has something to do with my laptop).

I believe my sharing is setup correctly, according to this thread and per Perrin's recommendations. I've also tried with both firewall on and off; Config IPv4 off, as well as manual per TCURTIN's recommendation and typing in IP's ending with 3 and higher.

I have tried connecting my xbox to my laptop with both a regular ethernet cable and a cross over cable (because on network status my built-in eithernet always shows up as red or not plugged in).

on xbox network configs, I never get failed network adapter, only falied IP address and have yet to get further on my mac.

Again, it states "Your gateway did not respond to a network request". Sometimes it will say flat out that it wasn't valid if I'm trying a new IP configuration.

In terminal, I get standard information:

inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255
ether 00:11:24:ce:38:60
SERVER: 167.206.3.247#53(167.206.3.247)

If I use Tcurtin's advice, it will also give me an additional inet address with the IP i've manually typed in, such as: 192.168.3.1

When I look at my airport TCP/IP settings I see that it is:

Config IPv4: using DHCP
IP Address: 192.168.1.xxx
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.1

What else could I possibly do or be missing? This is driving me insane. What could possibly be preventing me from getting though my gateway?

Someone please please please Help! I can be reached at cheksai@yahoo.com, I'd be so grateful!

hey everyone i got this setup to work with my powerbook

now i only have one problem

my NAT says Moderate on my 360 causing me to lag in some games, and to not connect to some people's hosts on Halo 2. Does anyone know how to switch the NAT settings from moderate to Open?

P.S.
I know it's not the router since I have a wireless adapter that gives an "Open" NAT connection

Hello guys. I've already red the whole thread but I'm not still able to connect my xbox 360 to internet :(
I would like to share my internet connection with the xbox 360. That's my mac configuration:

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/2...magine1sv5.png

In the xbox setting I've put:

ip 192.168.2.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.2.1

DNS 208.67.220.220
DNS 208.67.222.222

I've checked the right ip and DNS using the terminal. But I still get a DNS trouble. The xbox 360's tool says there is an error in the DNS setting:confused: .
By the way, the mac is connected using an airport express and I'm trying to share internet using the ethernet cable. I've well opened the sharing connection in the system preference:eek:

I'm sorry for my not well English, I hope you have all understood what I wrote.:D

I've passed the first three tests, cables, IP and DNS. But the final stage (Connecting to Xbox Live) won't work. The MTU size is fine too. Any ideas?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Solved very similar problem

my setup is: (Cable Modem -> Apple Express base station -(wireless)-> iMac 10.5.1 -(ethernet cable)->XBOX360)

i followed Perrins tutorial and I couldnt get past the DNS check over and over!

i figured it must be the DNS cuz it got the IP figured out, well heres how it all happened. in Perrins post it seemed ok for my IP address to be different than his, when i used the terminal tool i got a completely different address, well it turns out i had both my Airport and my 'Built-in-Ethernet' in "connected" mode. i made sure i turned off the 'built-in-ethernet' connection and re-started the computer.
After i did this and began once more from the beginning of Perrins post and opened up terminal AGAIN. But this time i got an interesting response, right there was Perrins IP address as listed in his posting, 192.168.2.1. my DNS server # was the same as it was the first time i looked in Terminal but i knew this time things would end differently!

So i went back into my xbox360 and typed in all the info (exactly what Perrin posted) plus my DNS #. Then crossed my fingers and it worked! one other thing i found confusing was in regard to PPPoE Settings and Advanced settings, there was no Automatic or OFF buttons they just needed to have no information listed in them to be considered such. in any case hope this helps anyone with a "different" ISP than Perrins and mine and DNS troubles.

Rock out!

x_johnnyy 01-16-2008 07:27 PM

I had the same problem, I finally figured it out.

Change the ip address of your router to 192.168.1.1 this makes it alot easier. if it is already then its fine. Assuming you are already using ICS with airport and built in ethernet.

Settings on your Mac:

under built in ethernet:

Manually
Ip address: 192.168.0.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255

under airport

using DHCP.
no other changes, router should automatically put numbers there.

Now to the xbox!

Under network setting go to edit settings

Manually set
ip address: 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

under dns setting
primary DNS server: 192.168.1.1
secondary DNS Server: 192.168.1.2

THIS WILL ONLY WORK IF THE IP ADDRESS OF YOUR ROUTER IS SET TO 192.168.1.1. IF NOT DONT BOTHER WITH THIS. if it doesnt work contact x_johnnyy@hotmail.com

DNS is driving me crazy!!

My DNS connection is choosing when I can play! Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it just doesn't connect. I've been told by a computer whiz that it's something to do with my firewall but I have set it to allow everything that is coming in so don't know why it does not work. Yesterday I refreshed the DHCP lease and it worked so I thought brilliant that's it but today it won't work. I can't be the only guy out there with this problem. Please somebody help!!!

ALEXXX 02-29-2008 05:50 PM

you're not alone. mine was working fine for aggggges and now the DNS just randomly says failed. recently changed to mac osx leopard but havent any problems till just now.

annoying as hell

JJclarke101 03-05-2008 03:49 AM

Alexxx- I was told by a friend that if you always renew the sharing connection when turning on the mac THEN turning on the xbox it will work. I've been doing it now for a few days and have been getting on everytime, if it doesn't go on right away try putting COD4 on and going through the menu's to get on live through the game. This forces the dns to work, don't know why but at least I can play when I want to. The sharing connection is a glitch, after the mac has been off it resets it to off but will still show the green button saying it's on, it's a pain to always renew but a pain which is saving me £60 or $100. Think it's worth it.

Right.. im having a massive problem.

i used this step by step guide

http://www.ofzenandcomputing.com/zanswers/358

and was very impressed as it actually worked. i played Xbox for about a week on live and everything worked fine.

i then one day came home to find it not working at all.

i used the terminal - ifconfig and got the ip address of "inet 192.168.2.1" but when i go onto system preferences, network, it says that my ip address is 192.168.0.2 . which one should i be putting in?!

my router ip number is 192.168.0.1

ive used the ip address of 192.168.2.2 (as the website said to add a number to the end) and when i run the Xbox live test it says the ip address is confirmed but the DNS fails.

i still have 255.255.255.0 as my subnet

and on the dns i just put my router number as 192.168.0.1 - (my ip addresses have changed tho im like 90% sure they have.)

can anyone else me? because soon im just going to go out and buy a wireless adapter which is like £60.

Cheers if you can help me.

I have tried this same linked site and thought I was on to something and it was going to connect, after passing the DNS. Then I failed MTU (on my xbox) and do not know what that means or how to fix it. Can anyone help?

Oh and I am also confused this IPv4 business. What is that? My MacBook only has IPv6.

Thanks.

henrymc88 05-06-2008 05:51 PM

i have set up everything exactly as everyone else has said to do so but it still wont pass the DNS i share my wireless with 3 other pc's and my firewall is off, the ip works but when i try and connect the 360 to my mac the dns fails and then i haev no internet access on my mac, what should i do???

bringyourbest 05-16-2008 06:37 AM

if anybody could help.

i have internet through verizon by the cellphone internet aka Broadband Access and i have had ppl tell me that its not good for running xbl. but i disagree. it has a 500-800 kbps upload speed and thats more than enough for xbl. the way my computer is connected to the internet is the a small usb modem verizon gave me and its plugged into one of my usb ports.
i wanna run an ethernet cord from my built-in ethernet to the xbox.
i have internet sharing turned on to share with my ethernet port.

my tcp/ip settings on my ethernet are:
config IPv4: off

i checked the ip assigned to my ethernet port and it says 196.198.2.1 just like everyone else's mac.

my xbox settings look like this:
IP Configuration: Manual
IP: 192.168.2.2
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router/Gateway: 192.168.2.1

DNS server: 69.78.96.14

if found the dns server number by typing dig in the terminal app just after i found my ip assigned to the ethernet port.

every time i text my xbox live connection, it fails the ip address test.

please someone help

DNS problem (yes, still)

Hey everyone. I'm recently new to this forum, but have been reading for a while. I like what I'm seeing, and was wondering if someone could help me out.

For the longest while, I've used bootcamp on my Macbook Pro, and ran both Mac OS X and Windows XP (yes, I know its a sin  - I'm awful) but the only reason I did it was because I play Xbox Live. I just connected an ethernet cable to my computer, enabled internet sharing, and then went ahead with xbox live (of course every setting was on automatic).

I've read over all of these posts, and would really like some help in the DNS area. For some reason I've tried just about everything, and the DNS part still won't work for me. As I type in "dig" to terminal, I get:

SERVER: 192.168.2.1#53(192.168.2.1)

so naturally, i went to my xbox and went into DNS settings, manual, and set the primary DNS server to 192.168.2.1 (I'm still unsure if I need to do anything witht he Secondary DNS server [it's currently at 0.0.0.0]). I want to make this clear, I have NO PROBLEMS with IP settings, IP address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway. Everything is fine until the DNS part.

I have not tweaked anything in System Preferences other than I turned on Internet sharing in my Built-In Ethernet Box. I believe I'm missing some step in there somewhere - I think I need to tweak somewhere under "Network" and then either Airport or Built-In Ethernet (I've read alot about IPV4 and IPV6, but have no idea what they do ).

Please Please Please could someone help me. I've got to leave to go out of town and need to get this fixed in the next few days. I'd be incredibly grateful.

If anyone has any suggestions, please post them, and if you feel extra-nice, you could email at erickdevore@gmail.com.

Thanks so much everybody!

I just moved down to florida and I have wireless connection on my mac. I am running an ethernet wire from the port on the back of my mac to my xbox 360. At first I could not get the IP settings to work. I have all of that set up using perrin's set up. Here is the problem. It confirms the IP address and the DNS but when it gets down to MTU it fails. Any one know what I'm doing wrong ? any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I know this thread is 4 years old but I stumbled upon it in my quest to figure out how to forward ports for my Xbox 360 using ICS on my iMac (Leopard)

I have successfully connected my Xbox to the internet but i get NAT type strict. I need to forward the necessary ports for my Xbox 360 but I have no idea how. Any help would be appreciated.

Xbox live test fails at MTU

I have a mac min with built in airport card, sharing an internet connection, and i have an xbox360 with a wireless network adapter. I inputted all my ip and gateway and dns values manually. When I run the test it recognizes the wireless adapter, the wireless connection , passes the IP test, passes the DNS test, but fails when it reaches the MTU test. What is the problem?

gumsie 11-22-2008 06:39 AM

Just finally got mine working.
My main mistake. Plugging into ethernet 1 instead of ehthernet 2. !!!

Still, I just followed what perrin said in his first post, so at present my settings are;

On the Mac-
System Preferences>Sharing>Internet Sharing>On.
System Preferences>Network>Ethernet 1>Configure>Off, (all other boxes empty).
Strange that the Mac show ethernet as not connected tho

On the xBox
IP address>192.168.2.2, (as per perrins instructions)
Subnet mask>255.255.255.0, (as per perrins instructions)
Gateway>192.168.2.1, (as per perrins instructions)
DNS server>192.168.100.1, (as per perrins instructions)
PPPoE>Default
Advanced settings>Default

How do you recharge Energizer e2 rechargeable batteries on the xbox? I have an xbox recharger cord, battery pack, and energizer e2 recharger batteries but the batteries don't seem to be recharging! When I connect the cord, xbox, and controller to recharge the batteries, there isn't a red light to indicate that its charging and either way, it doesn't seem to be charging.

Command Line Port Forward NAT

Hey Everyone this worked for me. I was getting the Moderate NAT error when testing XBOX Live using internet sharing. This fixed that issue

1. You need to setup internet sharing as properly instructed above.

2. Put Your Computer on the DMZ or open the proper ports (UDP 88 3074 & tcp 3074)

3. Follow the instructions on this website. To forward the proper traffic to your xbox

http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/...ing-mac-os-xs/

Here is the conf file settings I used.
redirect_port udp 192.168.2.2:88 88
redirect_port udp 192.168.2.2:3074 3074
redirect_port tcp 192.168.2.2:3074 3074
192.168.2.2 was the IP of my Xbox, You should use the one in the your xbox settings

Also I received this error but it hasn't caused any issues
Binding to NATPM port failed!

Hi, I am having trouble finding my routers IP address because I live in a school dorm and ifconfig en0 does not show the IP address in terminal. I'm guessing its blocked by the school. Is there anything I can do? I hit error at the IP address part.

Schnarflix 03-24-2009 08:08 PM

DNS Configuration: Manual
[enter the IPs of the dns servers provided by SBC] They should be in the documentation and likely in your router config. If you can't find them, type "dig" in terminal.app and after a bunch of text scrolls by, you'll have a line starting with "SERVER" near the bottom, the IP address in that line is the DNS server your computer is using, so you can enter the same in the xbox settings.
Every other site I had checked regarding this issue failed to address DNS errors. All I had to do was use this "dig" command in Terminal, and, indeed, the SERVER address (( in my case 192.168.1.1 )) when input as both the Primary and Secondary DNS address, had me connected in no time!

Other than that my settings were what appear to be the logical Mac standard in these situations:

:::IP Settings::: Manual
IP Address: 192.168.2.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1

::: DNS Settings::: Manual
Primary DNS Server 192.168.1.1
Secondary DNS Server 192.168.1.1

Can connect this way, but can't download patches

All,

Just got a new XBox 360, and the posts in this thread have been tremendously helpful. The very first thing the 360 wants to do is download the new dashboard (NXE) but the download just sits there and times out.

I can connect to live...anyone have any suggestions on what I can try??

silv3rhawk 08-06-2009 07:07 AM

ive got this issue solved but now i have a problem with the NAT settings can anyone help

dbow 09-07-2009 07:39 AM

Likewise with the NAT, anyone know how to forward ports for mac osx internet sharing?

I've followed schibs18's post but to no avail...

trevor 09-07-2009 11:41 AM

95% of XBox 360 networking problems would be fixed by the following two simple rules:
1. Don't use Internet Sharing, use a router.
2. Put the XBox 360 into the DMZ in your router.

But if your xbox 360 console is too far away from your router the only other option is buying a £60 wireless 'g' adapter from microsoft.

That and setting up internet sharing on your mac, which doesn't cost a penny.

Well, then I have some very good news for you! That's not your only other option, no matter what Microsoft would have you think. I would recommend an ethernet to wireless adapter, also known as a "gaming adapter". I personally use the Linksys WGA600N with my XBox 360 because it offers 802.11n draft wireless. But you can get a name-brand 802.11g ethernet to wireless adapter for around $29, or a generic with questionable parentage for even less.

These adapters plug into the ethernet port on the XBox 360 and translate to wireless without requiring any driver. You do have an easy setup to do with the adapter attached to your computer first, but that's pretty straightforward.

While it may be free (if you don't count the cost of your Mac), it doesn't work well. You will always have to have your Mac turned on for it to work, and you will always have the "Strict NAT" in your XBox 360, and you will very likely continue to have lots of other problems as well.

Really, you will be much happier if you get a real wireless router if you don't already have one, and an ethernet to wireless adapter for your XBox.

Got it to work

OK so for more modern users of these instructions (using snow leopard, for example) there are a couple of things to keep in mind for this to work.

#1 - on the xbox, your DNS server is, in fact, your router IP address. also make sure you enter the router address under DNS server in your 'ethernet' settings.
#2 - make sure you manually assign an IP to your 'ethernet' connection, then use that IP for the gateway IP, and that IP+1 for your xbox IP.
#3 - there is an element of magic to get this to work. I had to deactivate and activate my 'ethernet' connection in network settings a couple of times before it worked. My actual mac's internet connection also went out a couple of times. No idea.....just glad it finally clicked.

Jamie.the.geek 05-23-2010 08:13 PM

Hi, i was wondering if any of you could help me?? I'm stuck as my setup's different to practically everyone in this thread (a few people seem to have the same but never got a response).

Basically, i'm in uni halls, and our internet is wired from an ethernet socket on the wall. However, we have to sign in each session to be able to actually get on the internet, and as the 360 doesn't have an internet browser, there's no way we can just connect it to the wall and sign in. we also can't sign in on the computer and then swap the cable over because they have different ip addresses. However, i do happen to have a wireless adapter for my 360, so would like to use the following setup:

Internet socket ---(ethernet)---> Macbook ---(airport/network adapter) ---> 360

I've got internet sharing turned on, on my macbook, and can connect to my friends pc's if we change one of the settings (network type i think) to shared, but there is no option to do this on the 360. Does anybody know a way to work around this??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

stringer630 07-01-2010 02:10 PM

I've been having intermittent problems with Xbox live and my MacBook for a while now. I finally get it working and it seems fine for a couple of months and then it just stops working. It is very confusing as none of the network settings have actually changed. However I may have found a remedy. I hope by sharing it on here it might solve the problem for other people too because I know how frustrating it is.

So here is my setup:
Sky BroadBand (UK ISP) Wireless Router -> MacBook Via Airport -> Xbox 360 via Ethernet

The settings that I use on the Xbox are as follows:
IP Settings: Manual
IP Address: 192.168.2.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1

DNS Settings: Manual
Primary DNS Server: 68.105.28.11
Secondary DNS Server: 68.105.29.11

Make sure internet sharing is enabled in the Sharing preferences and you should be good to know.

Now if (and in my case when) Xbox live starts to fail to connect when none of the network settings have been changed, try disabling internet sharing and re-enabling it in System Preferences. This seems to rectify the problem.

Hope this helps someone out there.

swordtruth15025 07-12-2010 01:08 PM

using the internet sharing option also works

So I was trying to figure out how to connect my xbox to a router across the room and I realized that my brother already had a wireless dongle for the xbox. So I decided to try internet sharing.

It's actually very simple.

1. Turn on internet sharing (system preferences>sharing)
2. Select to share connection from ethernet to airport
3. go to airport options and under tcp/ip change to manual and input these numbers instead

IP=10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0

4. Open the network preferences on the xbox
5. connect to the wireless (if you made a password you'll have to enter it)
6. change the IP setup to manual and put them in this order

IP = 10.0.0.2
subnet = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 10.0.0.1

then Change the DNS to
Primary = 10.0.2.1
Secondary = 10.10.10.100

And then you should be all set to connect. It works pretty well and now you can also use your ipad, Iphone or Ipod touch without having to purchase a wireless router.

Peace all, Enjoy
