What app will open an mhtml document?
 

i have a homework problem for one of my mechanical engineering classes and the file is in .mht format. Usually he posts things in .pdf, but i am having trouble with this file.

just see assignment #7, the file is "Special Problem 1"

When i downloaded it, Word v.x (2004) tried to open it but i got an error saying it wasn't a valid web archive. I also tried opening it in Safar and IE with just a huge page of rubbish displaying.

Hopefully the file is corrupt, and i'm not the only one, i will see in the meantime. But should Word open this file with no problem?

Hmm...weird. My colleagues inform me that the file opens fine in Acrobat Reader on a PC.

However, Preview nor Adobe Acrobat 6 on my Mac can open this file. Those two programs, and word, all say the document is corrupt.

EDIT:

Just opened it up in VPC 6. The file opens with Internet Explorer 5, but not with Adobe Acrobat.

So, now i'm confused, how come IE for Mac won't open it?

MHT is a microsoft-centric format for saving a documents like a web page. Unfortunately, its not compatible with anything but Windows. You can extract this one by dragging it onto StuffIt Expander and renaming the files (all but the first one) with '.gif' at the end.

The first document of the set is a Javascript to display the GIFs in order. It actually opens in TextEdit once extracted, but it doesn't see the pictures. It just shows blank pages.

When I download the link, it shows up as an Entourage file. Double clicking on it, opens Entourage and displays a mail message in html with your homework. If you do have Entourage, try it.

I just tried to open it with Entourage from Works X. It didn't work. I have Works 2004 on my other Mac, but it's not running at the moment. I'll try it later.

I tried it with Entourage 2004 though!! Sorry should have been clearer.

Graphic Converter opens it perfectly. :)

I think it's only opening the first page (there's multiple pages), unless i just don't know how to go to page 2 of the document in graphic converter.

You're right. Graphic Converter only displays the first image.

It opens for me in Entourage X running under 10.3.5 it's an email message with a bunch of GIF image attachments.

Mht is indeed a web achive type format for IE.

I have a pc at home so I have converted the file to a web page (all files)

changed the source to the files in html, and opened on my Mac to save as a PDF.

There are 8 pages but they are only web page anchors. Which do not work
just scroll down

so in the PDF you will see that the pages are broken by a thick grey line

I didn't realize there was more than one page – the first page was bad enough! Imagine making all that mess over some terrible handwriting, and a couple of pics! (times however many pages it was)

So I wasn't exactly encouraged to look for more :P

For some reason, my teacher loves this format. It is quite bothersome, he keeps posting stuff on the web in this format. Can you tell me exactly how you did this? I have virtual PC, it opens in IE, however, i can't print it (whenever it try to add a printer, it tells me there is not enough resources, even though i have 1GB of ram and have given VPC 512, but that's another story)

So can you walk me thru the steps you took in converting it to something readable by my Mac?

How to Convert .mht (web html archive files) on a Mac
 

Here is the guide I promised. I have posted it here so everyone can see it.

My network at home is down so I could not move the files between my xp box and my G3 laptop. So I had to work out a new way to do this


This is all done on Mac. So here goes.

1.Download your file and put it into a new folder. We will call this folder the ‘Projects folder’ for now

2.You may want to Rename the file to a short name like this

‘Homework-- Project 1.mht’ to ‘Homeworkp1’
(Save a little bit of typing later)

3. If you have Stuffit expander
Then drag and drop your ‘Homeworkp1.mht’ file onto it. (If not you will need to download it. Try versiontracker.com to be safe. The app should be free for what you need. )

Stuffit will un-compress the file and create a new folder in the‘Projects folder’. The new folder will be named something like ‘HomeworkP1.mht Folder’.

4. Open the ‘HomeworkP1.mht Folder’

Inside you will find a set of files

HomeworkP1.attachment01
HomeworkP1.attachment02
HomeworkP1.attachment03
HomeworkP1.attachment04
HomeworkP1.attachment05

5. Delete ‘HomeworkP1.attachment00’ Or just ignore it.you do not need it.

6. Change the name of the other files like this.

7. Open up a new 'Text.app' Document,

9. Go to the menu ‘Format’ and select ‘Make Rich Text’

10. Drag the ‘gif' files one by one on to the new Text.app Document. Making sure to start at number 01 through to 08 and each one drops underneath the last one .

11. Go to the ‘File->‘page setup’ menu and change the paper size to ‘A4’ if it is not so already.

12. Then go to the ‘File->‘Print’ menu . At the bottom of the print window you will see ‘save as pdf’

Click it.

13. Save your file and make sure the extension .pdfis on the end.

14. Open your file in your pdf browser. Done

On a side note. The ‘HomeworkP1.attachment00’ file is actually the html page.

I did find a way to use this and reset the images to show up in it using Mac Word, but thank god I worked out the obove way.
Although it worked fine, it was fiddly, and would have been a pain to explain in full.
But in a nut shell: change the ‘HomeworkP1.attachment00’ file to
‘HomeworkP1.mht’ and open it in WORD (mac).
the page opens without the images but maintains the page layout.
Now click on one of the image spaces and use the edit link menu. change the source of the files in order (top to bottom /1-8) and press ok. then click on one of the images again and use format picture to increase the size (use percents ). repeat for all. Ignore if the text looks ghosty. Now save as webpage. and then do your print-pdf bit.

There is an easier way if you have "Graphic Converter" (from Lemkesoft).
Do the above steps 1 to 5. Then:

6) Launch Graphic Converter and choose "Convert & Modify" from the File menu. On the left side of the dialog, select the image files (no need to rename them). On the right side, choose a destination folder.
At the top, set the function to "Concat...".
At the bottom, set the destination format to be PDF.
Press the "Go" button.
A dialog will appear asking you to confirm the vertical orientation. Press Ok.

7) The PDF file will be in the destination folder you selected and named after the original document but with a .pdf suffix.

Since Graphic Converter is scriptable, you could probably write an AppleScript to do the whole operation.

and then after all that why don't you give your teacher a swift kick in the ass for making such a poor choice in file formats.

Interestingly enough, I downloaded this file to my Mac (10.3.6), double clicked it, and it opened in TextEdit. At the top it says:
and the rest of it seems like normal styled HTML 4. Dropping the file onto Camino, I get the same coded page rather than a rendered one. In Safari, the Mime is not decoded so it's unreadable.

MacLink Plus Deluxe will translate it into a graphic format of choice and when converted to TIFF, there is a folder containing 8 pages that are easily viewed in Preview.

Thanks Hayne, Wish I had know you could merge files into pdf with GC before I had a play, would have been handy for many a job. Although I did learn a lot about how the mht files work.

Yes the file contains mime and html. Stuffit strips out the mime parts into image type files and the html into its own. If you have a page that you need to recreate exactly then you will need to use the 00 page and re-point the images.

I wrote to the developer (Thorsten Lemke) of "Graphic Converter" suggesting that he might want to add support for the MHT format. A few hours (!) later, I got a response saying that he has followed my suggestion and that it is now implemented in the beta version that you can download from his iDisk. His iDisk username: lemkesoftgmbh
(In Finder, use the "Go / iDisk" menu item "Other User's Public Folder" and the iDisk folder will appear in a Finder window)
By the way, he gave permission to publish this info in this forum.

I have tried the beta version and it works well in reading the MHT file referred to in the first post of this thread. It shows it as a multi-image file, with a control on the bottom left to change between images.
To convert it to a PDF (for easier reading), all you have to do is "Save a Copy As..." and specify PDF format.

That is well an amazing response. Nice one. I did try last night to see if the convert would do such a thing. But got very poor results. Not that I really get a load of these type files at home I do on occasion at work. So this will help.

OMG why so complicated? Just change the file extension from mht to eml and you're done! Entourage will open the file.

Good tip - at least for those who have MS Office.
I tried it with the .mht file referred to in the first post of this thread and it worked fine with the Entourage of Office X.

Yeah, i never invested in Office (although my dad did :P). I use Mellel for word processing -- i have no need for those other office apps, and wasn't about to spend $400 on Word so i can get a macro virus ;)

So it's some time later, and i've formatted my drive for Tiger and didn't save that special build.

I just downloaded the latest version off macupdate (5.7) and it isn't opening an .mht file i've come across yet again.

Surprising he wouldn't incorporate this into his future versions, isn't it?

MHT is listed as one of the formats that is supported for import:

If an .mhtml document is downloaded to your Mac, open it with Stuffit Expander X. Double clic the resultant icon and the document will open in a new Safari window.

You can open MHTs in firefox, with this extension.

That extension won't work on OS X according to the download page.

Opera 9 (currently available as an alpha-quality preview) is able to read and write MHTML files.

FYI: It appears as of March 19th, 2007 that the Graphic Converter solution does not work with GC 5.9.5.

I can't open an MHT file through any of the techniques listed here:

• Opera shows a blank document
• The Firefox extension doesn't work on OSX
• Graphics Converter lists MHT archive as a filter, but doesn't produce anything when converting
• Expanded it with Stuffit, renamed the files, removed the 00 file, and tried concatenating with Graphics Converter; no dice.
• Expanded it with Stuffit, renamed the files, removed the 00 file, and tried dragging into TextEdit.app (I don't have a text.app); no dice.

Any other thoughts?

I just had the same challenge, after my wife was sent three .mht documents by her professor. Downloaded the trial version of File Juicer, which solved the immediate problem. I did, however, have to do extensive manual conversion in order to fix Norwegian characters (æ Æ, ø Ø, å Å), dashes etc.

Is there an easier way now?

I'm not trying to be funny or facetious, but you could speak to the Professor/Course Organiser and request that (on an equal opportunities basis) they refrain from using file formats which prevent certain people from accessing them. Imagine if a short-sighted person was denied access to a large-print version, or a blind person was not able to get an audio or braille version.

I'm sure the university/college has a policy which states that all students will have equal access to the course materials. Requiring programs and/or operating systems, other than those specifically used in the course, goes against such a policy.

In principle, I couldn’t agree more. And believe me, the professor has already received plenty of feedback/criticism on precisely this.

But this is Norway, with fellesferie (joint holiday), and we can expect said professor, course organiser, their secretaries and most of institutional Norway to be incommunicado until mid-August. Which of course is when my wife’s own paper is due...

I think we agree, however, that they should have a compulsory course on file formats and the timely distribution of course material.
