Belkin F5D7050 802.11g USB Adapter, questions

Has anyone who may (or may not own) a D-link DWL122 USB 802.11b Adapter tried to use the Belkin F5D7050 with the D-Link (intersil) drivers? Or does anone know what the chipset is? I saw it in Office Depot the other day and considered taking it home to toy with it...

biznatch 08-27-2004 04:25 PM

The belkin device has drivers for Mac OS X on their website.

http://web.belkin.com/support/downlo...0&lang=1&mode=

Just FYI.

metaphyzx 08-27-2004 05:08 PM

I know about those (the F5D6050 series dual or single antenna) 802.11b. The Belkin F5D7050 is new. It looks a lot like the D-link DWL-122, and has a different chipset. thanks, though

applekid 12-14-2004 05:20 AM

excellent question!

Hi, I recently bought both the Belkin F5D7050 (802.11g) and the D-Link DWL-122 (802.11 b) Adapters in hope that they would work with my mac (running os 9.2.2). I tried (unsuccessfully) to find drivers for both. The only slight hint I found that indicated the Belkin might work with mac was from Belkin online chat support. I forgot the guys name that told me, but he said there is a way to make the belkin F5D7050 using the airport installer. He refused to tell me how to do this and told me to contact mac support for this issue. I think mac charges for support, so I haven't been able to find a solution. These devices remain unused (sadly) but If anybody is familiar with this issue or finds a solution, please post here or email me. Thanks!

metaphyzx 12-16-2004 03:56 PM

The DWL-122 drivers are here.

http://support.dlink.com/products/vi...tid=DWL%2D122#

click on the check by MacOS X.

Goooooood luck. last timt I tried this device, kernel panics galore...

blueshead 12-18-2004 06:42 AM

Don't use the d-link, I had one..as said kernal panics galore...it does however work as a great sniffer in stealth mode with kismac..because kismac wrote different drivers for it.. get the belkin 6050 , i'm using it and it is great

Good(ish) News:

Ive just spoke (via chat support) to a guy at Belkin - Raymond Grey/Gray? - and he told me that they were planning on releasing Mac/OSX drivers for the F5D7050!! When i asked when though, he was non-specific - to which i replied; sometime in your first Quarter (cos thats how you big businesses run, in quarters, right?).. and he said yes.

He also recommedned that you/I dont try using the Mac Airport installer - but then he would say that cos he works for them!

Hope theyre quick on this, Ive set my egg timer...

Belkin is now advertising the f5d7050 as being macintosh compatible. It is currently listed on their apple compatibility matrix for mac portables page:

http://www.belkin.com/apple/matrix/i...=1&lid=1&pid=1

I contacted their tech support about this and they say that this is a mistake and there are currently no drivers for Mac OS.

i found this... works on my iMac G3 and that was the last Mac that needed to be connected to the wireless network :) great!

i just bought the thingy today to find out that it didn't work. i looked at the driver list, but there wasn't one for OSX. pretty weird. it didn't work with older drivers and it's didn't work with airport. then i checked again on the website for drivers (but went to my local site; the .nl) and i looked.. there were two links. one for the F5D7050 and one for the F5D7050-V2... so i click the second, the V2, one becuase a special sticker on my package says: "2000". NOTHING! then i did the normal one and I found a driver for OSX 10.3 :) whooooo. I know it's for the old one, but i went ahead and installed it and it worked flawlessly! :)

1. download the file and get it to the destination computer (disk, cd, wired)
2. place it in your hard drive folder; not desktop (to prevent weird problems.. just in case ;))
3. connect the belkin thingy to a powered usb-port. keyboard won't work.
4. double click the installer (the .mpkg file) and run it
5. install the files, the standard installation is good, haven't checked the alternate one and do what the screen says
6. restart your mac when the system asks you too.
7. once you are booted again the belkin utiliy will open and register with the wireless network through DHCP... easy as pie. between computers work now, but the internet does not.
8. go to the system preferences >> network
9. it will beep about a new network adapter. click add and then click on APPLY or APPLY NOW.
10. close the belkin utility, it's no longer needed
11. fire up safari and type www.google.com and start googling ;)

p.s. the name of the thing is "ethernet something (en1)". i changed the "(en1)" to "(BELKIN)" to make it easy for me to seethe belkin thing in the system prefs. this is not needed :)

anyway.... have fun having wireless access to the net with this new thingy! ow and honor me like a young god ;)

Mine works too except I found that Tx burst should not be enabled

In the advanced tab of the Belkin utility app there is a checkbox to enable Tx burst. I found this setting to cause the signal to drop to my Netgear WGT624 router. My system is a Rev b iMac. I was able to pick up the Belkin f5d7050 for 19.99 at compusa with rebates.

i don't know what it's for... is it for speed? i reach max speeds with it anyway. so no need forme to enable it. i do have a belkin router too, so it might work. but i dont feel like testing, it works this way to it's max :)

rlmahon 04-10-2005 02:00 AM

I ponied up for the f5d7050 after hearing the success stories here, ran the installer (downloaded from the internet), changed the network set-up in the pref's hit "Apply" then got a message saying "Belkin 7050 (what I named the connection) is currently active. Belkin 7050 has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet." I am running an iBook G3 (32VRAM) OSX.3.8, trying to connect to a 2WIRE 1800HG using SBCYahoo! DSL. I also can't seem to find a manual (too new for OSX?) for this product - I don't know networking - so the whole Belkin Set-Up program is gibberish to me. If I had something to read I would! I can see the connection light does get lit up on the 2WIRE portal, but when I try to get onto the internet I get the "can't find server" mssg. Also this much only happened after I simply tried to click every button on/off in the Belkin set-up program (again - not a clue what I'm doing, just kind of intuitively guessing), and there is one drop down screen that asks "Encription Type" w/the option of WEP or NONE, and to use the WEP you have to have a Key#which has to be in hexidecimal?? - where would I get/find this??? So when I choose NONE - then at least I can get the "connection" light to light-up on the portal-but no internet connection - how bad is this (I use this in my house-not a business or apt). Guys - really sorry if this is basic stuff. Ask me about MIDI - yeah - but internet - not so much. - Again - If I had something/knew what to read - I'd do it! There seems to be some knowledgable and freindly people here - so any help - THANKS!!!!!

do you have the configuring throgh IPv4 set on DHCP? and does your router/modem give out ip addresses automatically? if not you have to fill it out manually in the network preferences.

Yes, the IPv4 is set to DHCP (in the network pref's). How would I know/find out if my modem gives out an ip address automatically?

FWIW, the DSL Model works fine with the built-in ethernet - when this option is used I get all the following lines filled in under IPv4 - IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router. But when trying to use the wireless set-up I don't get the Router line filled in. Does this mean anything?

thanks!

I am no longer able to find the OSX drivers on Belkin's website for the F5D7050. Have they been withdrawn?

I was able to download a version of the driver from their site about 12 hours ago, but I must have got the version that doesn't work. The software will not recognize my adapter. It says it is not plugged in.

Also, just an update for anyone interested from my previous post. I went to the website of the maker of my DSL modem - 2wire - and they said that I had to connect using WEP encryption which was located on the bottom of my modem. I entered that # in the Belkin set-up and bingo. Works for me now too.

Thanks,

D-Link 122g

I mistakingly bought a D-Link g122 dongle off of ebay. It is ver.A and has an Intersil prism chipset. It is not supported for Mac. The Belkin F5D7050 is supported in OS 10.3. I've read where people have used the Belkin with the old DWL-122 drivers. I am looking for a way to use the g122. Could the new Belkin drivers run the g122? It doesn't straight out of the box, but is there a hack to make the driver recognize the dongle. Does anyone have any ideas?

AHHHHH!! Can't get this thing to work HELP!

Hello, I have been trying to get this adapter to work with my G3 ibook for over a week now. It installs properly (so it seems). However the Profile I create will not connect (activate) unless it is set to "ad-hoc" which is not the kind of network I have (infrastucture). The icon will turn green but it will not connect and get an IP. I have tried with encryption on, off, everything. If profile is set to infrastucture the icon just stays red. I am not a network person but have set up several wierd and wireless networks up for surfing on internet and have never had this trouble. Also, on a side note. I installed an airport card into this machine aswell but it doesnt reconize the card at all. Being I bought it off of ebay I don't know if the card even works so I thought this adapter would be a good quick work-around for now. Unfortunatly I was wrong. Please tell me someone out there had the same trouble and acually fixed it.... and then tell me how you did it. I am running out of ideas for this little machine. Thank you so much for any suggestions.

Which one is v2?

I'd like to buy the F5D7050_v2. I've looked on several websites and none of them seem to make a distinction between F5D7050 and F5D7050_v2. I obviously want the one that will work with my mac. Any ideas?

Crispychris 05-14-2005 07:03 AM

I bought the F5D7050 v2 from DABS. It didnt say it was v2 on the site but the label on the box says version 2000. Hasnt helped me though as I cant get it to work. Where does the driver get installed? in extensions? & what is it called. Whatever it is the F5D7050 doesnt seem to call it up.

blumarten 05-29-2005 04:40 PM

HI there,

I have been following Strifers instructions and have managed to get to the point where the Belkin Utility can see, and says that it is connected to, my wireless network.

When I look in 'System prefs' >'Network' > 'Network status' the 'Ethernet Adaptor' entry has the dialogue, "Ethernet Adaptor (en2) is currently active and has the IP address 192.168.2.132. You are connected to the interent via ethernet adaptor (en2)"

Despite this, when I open Safari, or any other program requiring internet access (Fire / Azureus / X-Factor etc...) I can't get a connection out at all. Safari gives me the message "Safari can;t open the page because it can;t find the server www.google.co.uk"

My TCP/IP settings are set as follows:

Configure IPv4: 'Using DHCP'
IP address: 192.168.2.132
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router 162.168.2.1
DHCP client: *blank*

Can anyone help me get this bugger online?

Cheers

Chris

voldenuit 05-29-2005 06:49 PM

en2 sounds interesting, you have an internal airport card, right ?

First make sure that only the interface you want to use is active in the network settings.

Also switch the Airport card off completey as it might interfere.

And make sure that it's just a typo that your router is not in the same subnet as your device.

maclova 05-31-2005 04:27 PM

I've gone down this path once before when I didn't have a AirPort Extreme wireless adapter installed (recently bought a new PowerBook G4 that came with it), I can confirm that the D-Link is complete trash, when I tried the drivers for it would work for about 1 minute then fail...a call to support resulted in one of the tech people begging me not to return the adapter and tried to console me by saying that at least I would always get free support (they need that, and boy did I quickly return the adapter for a prompt refund). But then luckily at my CompUSA there was a staff member there, he seemed to have had lots of experience with wireless adapters and had actually advised me that the D-Link wouldn't work but I had brought it home anyways just to see for myself...I then told him that it didn't work for me either embarrassingly enough and asked him if he knew of a wireless adapter that does work with MacOS X Panther and up, he told me to try the USB adapter at macwireless.com. I then went home and ordered their USB adapter at macwireless.com...the driver installed and the wireless adapter worked like a beauty, it never gave me one bit of trouble. Plus the cord was quite long so I could place it in a location where I could receive a good signal, the adapter gets great reception basically anywhere you place it and works perfectly with MacOS X Panther and up (should work with older versions of MacOS X too although I haven't tried), it's a bit pricey compared to its competitors but it's well worth it if you're looking for a way to get your Mac wireless without the Apple AirPort adapter.

carlosfhernandez 06-09-2005 05:20 PM

I've just got home from buying the Blekin F5D7050, it is the V.2 I guess, because it has the sticker on the box with the 2000 number on it, and I saw many with the same sticker and number 1000.

OK, now the oddissey of making it work, I spent the whole afternoon trying to plug this thing, sometimes it is detected, sometimes it doesn't.

Finally, @ 01:00 hrs I made it!!! it works, it works fast!! then I turned the machine off, turned on again just to make sure....just to find out it is not recognized anymore, now everytime I restart the Mac, I have to write the key inder the 2Wire portal.

This is annoying, but at least it works, does anyone knows how to avoid this?

Thanks,
Carlos

maclova 06-09-2005 09:25 PM

return it and buy the usb adapter at macwireless.com instead ;)

V2 driver works fine with V1 device

Quote:

I have the F5D7050. I assume it's the V1, I bought it before the V2 or Mac OS X driver were ever mentioned anywhere (It was $10 after rebate at CompUSA, so I figured I'd take a gamble that I could get it to work.)

I have an original pre-USB beige powermac G3, with OS 10.3.9 shoehorned into it using X Post Facto, with an ancient USB 1.1 PCI card installed. In other words, it doesn't get more hinky or unstable than my system.

The V2 drivers downloaded from the link provided earlier in this thread worked fine with my V1, no hassle whatsoever. I installed, rebooted, fired up the utility app, and the thing found 4 available networks just like that. I opened my Network system prefs, and it recognized a new network interface "en1", which I was able to use to browse the web via my netgear WGR614 wireless router.

I also installed it on my 700mHz G3 iBook (you didn't think I relied on a beige G3 as my main computer, did you? ) I had one complication: with the dongle plugged directly into the side of the iBook, it seemed to have a problem seeing the wireless signal from my router. I tried using the USB extension cord to put some distance between it and my iBook's body, and it had no problem.

I hope the rest of you have as effortless a time with it as I just did. I am well pleased.

Mike

So I just picked this up today. It is version 2000. I tried installing the v2 drivers, they seemed to install fine (didn't say otherwise). I plug in the device and nothing. There is no new entries in the Network panel in the system prefs. I'm using Tiger. Anyone getting their's to work with 10.4? Any ideas on what hacks I should try out to get it to work?

Thanks!

I need to revise my above comments after a few weeks of using this thing. I've been using it primarily on my iBook, and the program always does easily recognize when the device is attached, and usually detects nearby networks immediately.

Beyond that, though, this thing is very, very erratic. Every time I wake from sleep the program hangs, and I need to force quit, usually several times in a row, and sometimes restart my computer, before it will work right. Sometimes it outright refuses to connect to a network for no reason I can discern - no error message, all settings correct, it just doesn't connect. Today I spent 20 minutes not getting connected to the public network at my local cafe before I decided to give up and cut my losses.

All in all it was a good emergency solution after I unexpectedly had to return my borrowed airport card - but for all the time I've spent force-quitting repeatedly, restarting, checking my network prefs pane to see if it's really connected, etc., if you count the productive work time I've lost so far, it would have been cheaper to just buy an airport card. That's what I'm going to do now, before I waste any more time.

Also, when the Belkin does work, its reception is nowhere near as good as an airport card.

DWL-g122 Anyone have any luck?

Hi,
New to the forum and to Macs, running a G3 Strawberry system running OS 8.6 (have 9.22 and 10.1.3 coming)trying to get it on line. I had a couple of locals reccomend the DWL-122 series, now that I have ordered it if I am reading correctly you good people are saying to go with the Belkin or something else. I had an Apple rep. tell me that the DWL-222 would definitely work?? Considering the age of my system could someone help me out. I am just getting started and do not want to invest a fortune getting this thing on line. My wife is about to kill me for starting a new project as it is! Thanks in advance.

I know how newbies are treated on some windows forums. Please dont tell me to READ READ READ! I am already doing that! Just need a little fast help as well! Thanks :)

I found the Belkin to be a basically adequate stopgap until I can get an airport card for my iBook. Don't know off the top of my head of you can put an airport in an old iMac (which I assume you have) but if you can that's what I'd recommend based on my experience. Considering the age of your operating system (even if you upgrade to 10.1) you may be in for some frustration - if it was me I'd wait to hear if someone else says they got the Belkin drivers to work with that version of the OS.

My opinion, though, is that given what you've said say you should avoid going with wireless at all unless you absolutely must. For a desktop computer like the iMac, you'll probably find simply connecting via an ethernet cable (for DSL) or a phone cable (for 56k dialup) much simpler and more reliable than dealing with wireless (especially USB wireless), and your iMac has ports for both already built in. Wireless really shines when your computer moves around a lot, it's a bit of a luxury otherwise and may provide more frustration than benefits.

As an aside, it sounds like you're making do with what you can get, but if you can, I'd also consider upgrading to a more recent version of OS X than 10.1. Most old iMacs should have a fast enough processor to run 10.3 at least. I have 10.3 installed on a 350mHz machine at home, which should be at least what your iMac has, and it's tolerable, if I don't keep too many applications open at once. You will need to install extra RAM, though, if you have less than 256MB installed, and the more RAM the better - that's actually more important than processor speed with OS X.

I also suggest you upgrade your wife, the Apple store is selling more computer-project-compatible ones starting at $799.

Mike

PS. Just kidding about the wife.

Success on Snow iMac DV

I have a iMac G3 (slot loading) that got hit by lightning. Everything seemed fine, except the ethernet port would not work. I opened it up and the ethernet chip had a huge hole in it :(.

Thanks to the comments on this thread, I puchased a Belkin F5F7050 USB adapter, and the machine is back up and running with network support!

I hate that I have to unplug and reinsert the adapter after a reboot, and I'm worried about what will happen when the machine goes to sleep. Yet, I'm happy to get the machine back to a usable state with only a $40 investment.

One tip I would like to share, because it actually took me all day to get it working is that if the utility is reporting that all your incoming packets have CRC errors, try dropping the "Power Level" setting in the profile. I lowered my Power from 100 to 75 and went from 100% CRC errors to 33% CRC errors, I'll try lowering it some more to see if it improves further. (I've got an Airport Extreme and Airport Express in a WPA protected WDS)

(I've got an Airport Extreme and Airport Express in a WPA protected WDS)

why doesn't anyone try the usb adapter from macwireless.com? It works perfectly without flaw on MacOS X (all versions)...really, it's worth the money

F5D7050_v2 Drivers for Tiger and Panther

I successfully use the Belkin USB Wireless adapter (F5D7050_v2) on a client's iBook with Tiger (10.4.x) using a driver from:

http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm - see "11g-RT2500 (For Mac OS 10.4.x Tiger) USB"

Belkin has a driver (hard to find on their site) for Panther (10.3.x) at:

http://www.belkin.com/support/downlo...2&lang=1&mode=

- see "F5D7050_v2- OS X.3 Drivers"

Tiger with the Ralink driver seems to work perfectly so far. Belkin does not yet have a Tiger driver (per their site and a call to their tech support).

Belkin F5D7050 Wireless USB on Mac OS 9.2.2?

Did anyone ever find a hack or workaround for being able to run the Belkin F5D7050 Wireless USB card on a Mac OS 9.2.2 machine?
I'm literally at CompUSA right now thinking about buying the Belkin Wireless Pre-N Router. I have a Mac mini on order, which I know it will work with, but also three older G3 Macs running OS 9.2.2 that I'd love to be able to connect to this network.

The lady at Belkin tech support told me the F5D6050 card would work with those older Mac, but they don't have any at this store. Any help or suggestions anyone in the group has would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe because it costs $99 while the Belkin costs $30 to $40?

Maybe because the one at MacWireless does not support WPA?

maclova 11-02-2005 08:50 PM

It's more expensive because it's a quality product and actually does work as advertised (and the drivers are very stable), it's well worth the $99 if you're serious about adding USB Wireless abilities to your AirPortless mac...as for WPA, although it's not listed as one of the features on the site I'm sure it does support it as it's a standard wireless feature AFAIK now adays...you could email MacWireless and I'm sure they'd confirm that theory (and yes you probably guessed by now, I am a very happy and satisfied customer of theirs, but no I don't work there/for them :p )

Can't get my Belkin F5D7050uk to install.

Hi everyone, this is my first post, I am a complete Mac novice so I hope you will tell me I am doing something simple wrong.

I am running a mac mini with OSX 10.3.7

My Belkin adapter has 3000UK written on the box.

I downloaded the Version 2 drivers from the Belkin site (as this is all that is available), installed it but nothing.

In the 'About my Mac' section I can see the adapter as a USB device so it is working but it doesn't appear in the Network section as a new network adapter.

When I try and use the Belkin software (which has appeared in my applications section) it says it can't see the device.

What am I doing wrong?

Help.

Many thanks in advance.

Matt.

Download the driver from here http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm as suggested by primal 1 on page 2 of this subject - it worked for me using Tiger OS!

maclova 11-26-2005 11:57 PM

lawsonium: You didn't buy the macwireless.com usb adapter ;) :p

Problems problems.

maclova - Not very helpful thank you.

arrows - I have downloaded and installed them but the problem is the same. Could it be due to my version being 3000?

Matt.

Here are drivers for older RT73 chipset F5D7050

Some guy somewhere was claiming all Belkin F5D7050's used Railink RT2500 chips. It ain't so. Perhaps the F5D7050v2's do (which apparently have a sticker on the box saying '2000' or '2001', or something). But the plain old F5D7050 uses an RT73 chip. At least the one I got from Agro does - check out the windows filenames on the CD.

If anyone else was a victim of this guys optimism and bought a regular F5D7050 like me. Try the RT71W OSX driver from http://www.railink.com/supp-1.htm (RT71W_D-1.0.5.0 UI-1.2.4.0 2005_11_25.dmg).

The file contains installers for both Tiger & Panther. I didn't test the Panther one. Once the installer's up and running it reveals itself to support the RT73 chipset also. Perhaps these chips are one and the same, no idea, but I posted this using it. (white ibook g3 dual usb (ibook2))

There's a couple of odd things - the ibook I'm using won't recognize the F5D7050 if you boot with it in (see System Profiler). Take it out and put it back and it appears (refresh system profiler to see). Also, probably cos of this, I had to start the wireless utility manually from the Applications folder.

As with most of these drivers, don't forget to set it up in Network Preferences after you reboot - whereupon it will become en1 or something (I got en3, but I've been messing with lots of drivers tonight - cos of that... guy).
Good luck

Struggling with Belkin G USB network adapter

I've just been following strifer's step by step guide and hit a wall. I downloaded and installed the F5D7050_10-3 driver, plugged in the usb wireless device, rebooted and nothing happened. The Belkin utility did not open automatically and register with the wireless network, and did not prompt me in any way. I opened the utility manually, clicked on add and got the prompt "Device not exist Please insert your network card and insert profile"

Preferences/network gave no indication of a new network adaptor.

I'm trying to run this on a G4 quicksilver running OS X 10.3.9

I'm afraid I'm pretty crap on setting up/entering profiles and configurations etc as I don't know what half of them mean so please explain things slowly. I won't be in the least bit offended if you talk to me like a child. Actually a child would probably understand a whole lot better.

Anyone who is trying to use the Belkin F5D-7050 there is a version # by the UPC code on the box, if you have ver. 3000 Belkin has not written drivers for it yet. If you have ver. 2000 or 2011 they have drivers for them. the driver listed above only work with 2000, 2011. I had the same problem on the iBook G3 talked to tech support at Belkin this is what the told me. I returned it and got ver. 2011 put it in and it worked fine.

ver 3000 sussed

Hi, after 3 days of trying to figure this, I found on a different forum that to use the ver 3000 adapter, you need to use the RT71W driver from the Ralink site as listed above. Hope this helps.
Phil.
p.s. am still figuring out how to access internet but am sure I'll get there soon.

Hey everyone.

I am a new mac owner. I have a imac G3 OSX 10.3 and recently purchased the Belkin
F5D7050 V2 and previously with my Linksys WRT54G (Using WEP)router I was able to connect using the Belkin drivers. Albiet the imac never detected the F5D7050 on boot I would have to unplug and reseat the USB cable then it would come up and I could surf until I had to reboot again.

The imac has not been used often at all. Until last night I wanted to set it up to be used just for surfing the net and look up email and misc things. Now It keeps dropping the signal. and Here is what has changed since I last used it successfully:

I have changed routers now I have a Linksys WRT55AG router and Im using WPA. I installed the http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm that Wayne had found and it actually finds the USB device on boot now which is great but stll have the signal drop issues. I tried lowering the power rating on each setting with no change. So it basically has a good strong signal for about 5 seconds then it says disconnected for about another few seconds then comes right back again Does anyone have any suggestions? I havent tried changing my wireless security to wep as this is not something I would do to fix it eitherway. But for testin purposes I could try it to see if that makes a difference.

I just wanted to bounce this off the experts here appreciate the help.

RT71W on iBook G3 OSX WirelessUtilityRT73USB Belkin Router 54g

Aloha from Maui!
Here's how I connected my iBook G3 OSX to my Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter. Yes, it's the version 3000, as I got it from CompUSA in Honolulu. Big up!!

First off, Belkin hasn't done it's own version of the driver necessary, so you'll have to download the version from http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm

http://www.ralinktech.com/drivers/Ma...2005_11_25.dmg

Next, install the driver and reboot. Here's a catch, you'll also have to do a {Apple Menu} Software Update for your system software, if it doesn't already have the Airport Express support.

If you need to, reboot again to effect the changes of the software update. The Ralink utilities should install themselves in the Applications subdirectory. The executable is called WirelessUtilityRT3USB. Search for it (Apple-F) if it's not there. If you can't find it, it's not installed.

Double-click the WirelessUtilityRT3USB file and you'll see the Tabs:
Profile - Link Status - Site Survey - Statistics - Advanced - About
The Profile menu usually executes it's script when you execute the file, but hasn't worked reliably. As you don't already have a profile, to create one you click the Add button. As my firewall/wireless router is also Belkin, I'll assume you have it set to Channel 1. I know you should have your SSID off, as broadcasting it leaves you open to Wardrivers, but for configuration...turn it on. This allows the software on the Mac to sniff out the router without manually inputting the SSID. I tried it with the SSID off, but couldn't get the initial configuration to connect.

I set the Power Saving Mode to CAM (Constantly Awake Mode) and the Network Type to Infrastructure. I tried it other ways, but could only get it to work this way. Once again, the Channel was set to 1, as I couldn't get the program to work with any other channel (at least during my initial setup).

On the Authentication & Security Tab, you can set it to Open if you have it set accordingly on the router. For my example I have my router set to WPA, to share a key between the wireless devices and the router. The password you set on the router's WPA-PSK is what you'll have to put into the WPA Pre-Shared Key. The Encryption I set was TKIP.

Link Status:
The Status will tell you if there's a link between your computer and router. If it's Disconnected, go to Site Survey and click Rescan. The computer will scan the 802.11 frequency to find your router's SSID. If/when it finds it, you'll see it there. Click Connect, and the Profile window appears. You may have to manually put in your WPA Pre-Shared Key again (bypassing your profile). Click Activate. If all is set up correctly, you will connect to the router. Go to System Preferences and click Network. Under the Show pulldown window, go to Network Port Configurations. My computer automatically recognized the Belkin External Ethernet Adapter as en1. Click Show >Ethernet Adaptor (en1), go to the TCP/IP tab and assuming you have your Wireless Router set to DHCP, Configure IPv4 to "Using DHCP" then click Renew DHCP Lease. Voila...you're connected and can now surf. If this didn't work, try emailing me and I'll see if I can revise this installation doc to be more specific.

i have the 'uk3000' version, and i am running tiger (10.4.4) on a G3 iBook, i've been following the instructions on this site with little joy.
First of all I managed to get it to recognise my wireless router, but not connect to it, and then it would say it's connected to it, but not let me browse the internet. A couple of minutes ago it connected for about 5 seconds, with strong signal, but then suddenly cut out for about 10 seconds and then connected again, but i was able to load my home page in this time, so maybe i'm on the right track.

I'm using the RT71W driver, i'm setting up an unsecured wireless network, since the encryption does nothing but confuse me, and i don't live close enough to any of my neighbours for them to get on my network.

Can anyone help me out?
I'm pretty new to macs, i only got this yesterday, after being a windows user for the last few years since my old iMac got too old, and i'm finding it hard to find my way around osx again.

thanks, james.

no_cars_go 01-16-2006 07:43 PM

i've now downgraded my ibook to 10.3.9 as it seemed to work fine on my imac running panther.
however this didn't work.

is it possible that this could be an iBook problem?

I turned off IPv6 in the Network Preferences, which let me use it for about 10 minutes without disconnecting, i don't understand how it did this and then returned to it's previous state without any settings being changed at all.

I want to connect to my netgear wireless router, most people trying to do this look like they're using an airport base station, could this make a difference?

I'm getting pretty desperate for this to work now.
If anyone is running the 3000uk version of this card under panther or tiger could email me at twoplustwoequalsfive [at] gmail [dot] com to compare settings it would help a lot.

no_cars_go 01-18-2006 04:26 PM

now i've set it to run everything as slow as possible, which doesn't really effect my internet connection, it just has a mind of its own, sometimes it works fine for hours, others it won't connect for more than a few seconds again.
I still get near to 100% connection quality, but this doesn't seem to matter.
I hate to look like i'm begging, but i'm really out of ideas, i've looked up just about everything i can about this card in the last week, and i've got nowhere.

My experience with Belkin f5d7050 USB dongle, version 3000uk

With the help of various forums I (apparently) successfully installed the f5d7050 uk3000 version on my Ti G4 powerbook running OS 10.3.4 (maybe 10.3.5 - I forget), using the ralink RT71 driver (which incidentally runs as WirelessUtilityRT73USB.app). It worked fine for a couple of hours, long enough to download and install 10.3.9. After that it randomly disconnected after very few minutes. I am using a Belkin wireless router. At the same location as the Ti G4, an Al G4 with airport works fine with strong signal.

The signal reported by the driver UI switches randomly between -1db and -44 db. If I locate the powerbook with the Belkin dongle within a few feet of the router, the signal still switches randomly, but doesn't drop out.

If I install the dongle on the Al G4 running 10.4.3 (using the ralink driver for 10.4), it behaves the same way - disconnecting at random unless I am very close to the router.

I suspect a bug in the driver. Until it gets sorted, I'll be using a wired connection.

I have been following this thread and am juts trying to get my daughters old iMAC onto this network so she can surf the web..

I plan on using the Belkin Wireless G Cable/DSL wireless router as well along with the wireless G PC Notebook adapter.

If this works, will I see the DSL router in the CHOOSER or?

on my ibook and imac it lit up fine, couldn't get online, but the light worked as normal.

and 'MacinSD', i don't think it is likely to work in OS9 at all, even in OSX it seems to be down to which version of the dongle you have. Some work perfectly, some are glitchy and some just plain don't work.

Works for me:)

Hi everybody, i've been using belkin F5D7050 3000yy version with great succes.
everything just works.
Low end mac like this (iBook G3 800Mhz Os X 10.4.4 ) this is by far the best buy for me.
27€ compared to (original) Airport 150€-250€ (ebay)
With this i'll get 54Mbps (well usb is still only 12Mbps:) and wap encryption. Great!!!
Drivers for this can be found at:http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm

i just picked up the Belkin wirelsee USB adapter (7050 v3000) last night.

After messing with it for 2 hrs, I gave up. It will not light up, it just isnt recognized etc.

After hearing all the good stuff in this post about it, I was jazzed that it would be so easy...WRONG.

Both the Belkin OSX 10.3 and the RTlink drivers dont recognize the USB adapter??

Should I take it back and try another just in case?

I tried it on My XP PC and it works fine???

Idamn i just wanted to get my daughter online...

this is what i don't understand.
that ibook is exactly the same as mine and i've tried using 10.4.4, but i haven't had any real luck with it, yet others have.
It's in for repair at the moment because its logic board needs replacing, maybe that affected it, i don't know.

MacinSD 02-09-2006 12:11 AM

why is this adapter so DIFFICULT????? this should be PnP(plug in play)

I cant beleive there are 4 different drivers (all of which I have tried) and NONE work. This thing just wil not be recognized. I can look under system prefs under the USB devices- It sees that its made by Belkin but the drivers wont link to it!!

Basically there are no other options for this iMAC if I want to get it wireless.

Belkin refuses to support it for OSX even though they say there is driver for v2?

They advised I take it back and get a v2000 model (although everyone here in San Diego already has updated the shelves with the 3000 model(2000 was gone before Xmas!!!):(

wired isnt an option at this time.

bummer-

maybe I'll get her a used PC laptop cheap with a card slot ...

I've been following your post's since you first had problems because my problems were EXACTLY like yours. The only difference is that I'm using an eMac running 10.3.9.
However, a recent post notified me of a new version of the ratlink driver...

"Drivers for this can be found at:http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm

After downloading this new version I haven't had a single problem...no connect-disconnect-connect-disconnect issues at all. It's only been two days now...so knock on wood...but I think the updated driver did the trick. I hope this helps!

hi.. is there any chance to get it working on MacOs X.2?

i wanted to download the driver from www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm, but there is not ONE driver for Mac in the list! (just for Linux and Windows)
where did it go?

i'd freak out if any of you could help me getting this driver.. couldn't be that hard, actually..

thanks!

Succes!

I have been trying to get this thing to work since nov. 05. Mine is a 3000df. It would work for Internet Acces, but drop out regularly, which was especially annoying when streaming music to my AirPort Express via AirTunes.

Now i have installed the new driver mentioned here (dated jan 25), and behold: no more dropouts, evn when streaming music and accessing the Internet at the same time. Ths is really great, considering I'm doing this on an iMac DV+ (450 Mhz G3) via USB 1.1!

My settings are: in the profile I set Power Saving Mode to CAM, and Network Type to Infrastructure. I set the Advanced options as follows: '802.11 B only' (any faster is pointless over a USB 1.1 port), and set 'TX Burst' to enabled. Considering the ridiculous cost of an AirPort Card + adapter, thi is a great solution for me. Kudos the people at Ralink Tech, who made this possible. Remember: you don't pay for their efforts when you buy the Belkin device. Belkin won't support Macs with this product.

Belkin 7050 Can't Find Mac Driver

Can anyone help with this wireless usb - I have used the driver from the Belkin site but it doesn't work. Everyone says there are better drivers on the Ralink site, but I can only find Windows and Linux. What can I do????

using Mac OS 10.3

Thanks for any suggestions.

You can find the drivers at the bottom of the page at http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm
Just above "Intel IXP Platform" you can find the Macintosh section. For version 2000 and 2001 use the 11g-RT2500 driver; for version 3000, 3000df and 3000uk use the RT71W driver.

This board is filled with great info, I've been reading it almost daily in order to get my iBook sans AirPort online.

Sadly, I picked up V4000 of the USB device, which must have just rolled out. None of the drivers work, period :-( I'm going to return it tonight in hopes that they still have some v3000 on the shelves.

Random disconnect problem

I'm using the v3000 product with the Ralink drivers.

I'm experiencing the problem that Clive has using either driver. The problem is that it connects, randomly disconnects, then reconnects. This happens so much that it is useless. The older Ralink driver (11.25) holds a usable connection only when the device is a couple feet from the router. Any further and it will do its disconnect routine. The newer driver (1.25) will do the disconnecting no matter how close it is to the router, despite what some people in this thread claim. I'm currently using the 11.25 driver with OS X 10.4.5. Keep in mind that it doesn't seem to matter that TX burst is on or not.

Does anyone know a solution to the disconnect/reconnect cycle that Clive and I are experiencing? Has anyone had luck using the v3000/OS 10.4.5/Ralink driver combination?

iBook G4 (no airport), Belkin F5D7050_v3... finally working

Spec: iBook G4
OS: 10.3.9 (Panther)

Belkin F5D7050_v3
Drivers Used: RT71WUSB-D1.1.0.0%20UI-1.2.5.0_2006_01_25.dmg
Source: http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm

First and foremost, thank you for this post. It was very useful. I was looking for a way to have a wireless connection for my husband's PC laptop, while I was still linked to broad band ... and vice versa.

I came across the Belkin F5D7050 on http://pcworld.co.uk.

We bought the Belkin. I got it home, I got it opened, then I installed it. It worked on my husband's PC laptop ... just fine. However, my iBook did not recognize the Belkin at all. I turned the bottom of the box over and it was VERSION 4.

They do not make DRIVERS for VERSION 4... for Mac. None of the Ralink Tech drivers will NOT work with a v4 Belkin Wireless USB network adapter. I tried for hours ... "no dice".

We had to exchange the v4 for a v3. I then had to reinstall the drivers on my husband's PC and reinstall the drivers on my mac.

Ironically, I used the Belkin v3 drivers first (not the smartest move on the chess board). My iBook did not recognize the device. Therefore, I went back uninstall the Belkin drivers and installed the drivers listed at the top of this post.

... it is working nicely. (Insert me knocking 3 times on wood...)

PS
I know this is a Mac forum, but my husband's PC laptop went a bit "bezerkozoid" after I installed the v3 drivers. The drivers some how disabled my husband's (wired) broadband connection and for about 10 minutes it kept flashing "network cable unplugged".

We finally got it working an hour ago. (Again, me knocking on wood 3 times...)

Many thanks again, I hope my post will help someone else out in a bind.

ironman86 03-22-2006 11:01 PM

not working now

After multiple installations and uninstallations, now the F5D7050 that I referenced in my previous post is not recognized in either USB port. It doesn't light up and the wireless utility says NO DEVICE. No matter how many times I reinstall the driver, it doesn't work. Does anyone know how to completely remove and refresh the driver so that it will work again? Thanks!

Help for the BELKIN F5D7050_V4

Here is some help for those who have purchased the BELKING F5D7050_V4.

I wrote Belkin when I originally bought my v_4, before I got impatient and switched to the v_3.

I do hope their response will assist those of you that bought the v_4 and decided to stick with it.

Good Morning,

As of yet there are no official Belkin drivers for the 7050v4

The v4 is based on a Zydas 1211 chipset

The Zydas drivers for Windows, Mac OS X (10.3 and 10.4) and Linux are available on:

http://www.zydas.com.tw/downloads/download-1211.asp

If you should need further assistance please feel free to contact me again.

RE - Help for the BELKIN F5D7050_V4

Tried both the downloads for the new version 4 above. On Os 10.3.3 and 10.4.2.
Both not working. On 10.3.3 using the 10.3 version supplied, software shows up in the preference setting but is not activated. No activation on plugging and unplugging the adaptor etc.
All units in UK PC world are now version 4, no version 3 only second hand units. Buying one now.

gleanerf2 03-27-2006 01:00 PM

The D-Link DWL-G122 works with no problems with these drivers_
http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/Download.asp
I have two, one on an G3 iMac and one on a G3 iBook.

serapio 03-30-2006 04:56 PM

I can get the panel to load, but can't connect

I'm using OS 10.4.5 and F5D5070 v.4.
Following the instructions posted here:
http://www.netstumbler.org/showthread.php?p=143295
I inserted these lines near the bottom of /System/Library/Extensions/ZD1211Mac.kext/Contents/Info.plist, before restarting.
Code:

                <key>16</key>
                <dict>
                        <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key>
                        <string>com.ZyDAS.driver.ZD1211USB</string>
                        <key>IOClass</key>
                        <string>com_ZyDAS_driver_ZD1211USB</string>
                        <key>IOProviderClass</key>
                        <string>IOUSBDevice</string>
                        <key>IOUserClientClass</key>
                        <string>EthernetUserClient_ZD1211</string>
                        <key>idProduct</key>
                        <integer>28764</integer>
                        <key>idVendor</key>
                        <integer>1293</integer>
                </dict>

The Zydas panel loads, recognizes the stick as "Belkin USB2.0 WLAN", and displays my WAP's signal in Available Networks. I've configured WEP etc, but I can't connect.

Anyone with better luck or troubleshooting ideas?

Help with the Belkin USB Adapter Version 3000 with 10.2.8

Hello,

I have been reading through the posts about the Belkin USB adapter and was wondering if anyone has managed to get the version 3000 working with a Mac running 10.2.8? We currently have a snow white G3 iBook running OSX version 10.2.8 with a burnt out ethernet card. Because of our tight budget, we were unable to buy the original airport card. I bought the Belkin USB Adapter and received a version 3000 of the dongle. I tried a few different drivers but was unable to get it to receive/transmit to out wireless router. Has anyone had success with it using the same, or similar Macintosh? This is the first time I am attempting to use a Mac wirelessly (if that's a word...). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and best regards,

Rich and Lily.

Hi

I have only got the Belkin version 3000 to work on system 10.3.3 and above.

Must be time to upgrade anyway 10.2.8 was a great and stable version but now looks a bit like system 9.1 in many ways.

Is there any advice for serapio and others with the Belkin F5D7050 v.4000?

I tried one in 10.3.9 (on two different Macs) and had the same experience, where I can see the available access points but can't connect.

I also picked up a v.3000, which worked perfectly with the Ralink RT71W driver.

Xytek 04-30-2006 06:16 PM

:WORKING: F5D7050 v3, ibook G3 running 10.3.9

I'm a total macnoob, but after spending several hours yesterday playing with the D-link DWL-G122 Usb adapter, and finally realizing (and reading on line to comfirm) that it wasn't going to work with WEP turned on ( i have a netgear 82.11B router that only does WEP), i returned it today for the Belkin.

I grabbed the drivers from ralink, plugged in my usb port, and VOILA! saw my router, even my previous profile, and i connected to it. Since i had my en0 connected, it did some funky stuff with default routes and stuff, but after disconnecting it, and rebooting only with the Belkin dongle, i was up and running. :)

I hope this helps the TONS folx out there searching for an a cheaper way of connected wirelessly than the Airport. The ralink driver for the Dlink doesn't work for WEP, but i understand it works for WPA personal and the like.
Also, i didn't have to fiddle with any files, or mess around with any settings.
just loaded the driver from ralink, rebooted, inserted my usb dongle, and configured it. And i was off and running.

Hope this helps!
Xytek

Still need a driver for VERSION 4

If anyone finds the answer to the driver problem for VERSION 4 ( OS 10.3 or 10.4) let us know.

I have the Belkin Version 2 , 3 and 4 and only the 4 is a non runner.
Like me lets all mail Belkin and see if we can kick them into action

strollingman 06-02-2006 08:21 AM

There appear to be new Zydas drivers dated 30/5/2006 for Mac OS X (10.3 and 10.4) etc :

http://www.zydas.com.tw/downloads/download-1211.asp

Will try them later, maybe these will work for the version 4.

P.S. anybody know where i can pick up a copy of osX really cheap??

serapio 06-16-2006 02:34 PM

The new drivers work for some people, but not me

There's a relevant discussion here:
http://forum.osx86project.org/index....pic=2402&st=60
about the new driver. Belkin F5D7050 v 4000 uses the ZD1211REV_B chipset, AKA ZD1215, so the kext Info.plist you want to edit is ZD1215Mac.kext.

The new driver has enabled some people to get the F5D7050 working, but others no, myself included. It looks like it might be that it works for x86 processors but not ppc.

I did get my F5D7050 working in Ubuntu, though, so for now I'm just restricted to linux when I want to be mobile.

I'm currently trying to us my v 4000 on my ppc mac mini. I've edit the .plist file under ZD1215. The setup program sees it as a belink usb 2.0 wlan but, is continually connecting. Anyone else get it to work yet?

woohoo! the drivers that Zydas released Monday work for me. In summary, for Belkin F5D7050 v4/4000,
1.) download the Mac USB driver from http://www.zydas.com.tw/downloads/download-1211B.asp
2.) mount the dmg, open folder "Mac OS X10.{3|4}" corresponding to the OS you have, and run the Installer package you find there
3.) Edit /System/Library/Extensions/ZD1215Mac.kext/Contents/Info.plist and add an entry for the F5D7050, making sure to leave the permissions as you left them. (e.g. use "sudo vi Info.plist" and type "[esc] :336 [enter] 15ddPPi", change the key value in the new entry to 23, the idProduct integer to 28764, and the idVendor to 1293, then type "[esc] wq".)
4.) Restart your computer, unplug your ethernet, and plug in the stick.
5.) Open the System Preferences > Network, and it should tell you it found a new interface. Switch over to the interface and assuming you are using DHCP, hit Apply.
6.) Open the Zydas WLan application, open a setup window, refresh available networks, and double click on yours. Voila! You should be back online.

Jercro 07-29-2006 01:03 AM

Looks like they discontinued those RT71 version drivers.

I ended up downloading the new RT2571W/RT2671 driver and it finally recognized the Belkin USB unit and allowed connection to my Linksys wireless modem.

The main problem seems to be that you need to go back into the System Prefs>Network and reset the default connection to the new network interface. This is network interface (en1) on my Imac G3 rather than the default (en0).

LOL

This Works!

I tried everything in this forum. This driver works in Tiger.

http://www.factman.com/USB_Wireless_Installer.dmg

It will read it as a Ethernet Port Adapter. I had to go to System Preferences>Network>Network Port Configuration and make sure Ethernet Port Adapter is at the top of the list. Hope this works for everyone. I recommend only using Apple products form now on. Silly me for trying to save money.

Wow, I'm really overdue in updating that list of devices. I might need to enlist some help in getting it up to date; with what drivers does what hardware work... Can I draft a bit of aid here? :)
