What is a good mac "Kazaa" like program?

I have tried limewire, but I didn't like that very much. Now I am using Mlmac and it's even worse. Is there anything else?

stong 04-20-2004 06:42 PM

I use acquisition. You would want a fast connection..otherwise you'll be there for a year downloading.

Acquisition is nice, but it is shareware. XFactor connects to more networks and is free.

saint.duo 04-20-2004 09:40 PM

iTunes 4 with the music store. ;)

Unless you're wanting a spy-ware ridden (lite) multimedia company searched P2P application, then I don't know.

MBHockey 04-20-2004 09:46 PM

The only p2p app that had spyware was limewire, but that was a while ago. I don't really use p2p apps, since the sound quality is bad. Also, iTunes music store only has songs at 128 kbps (AAC, i know) but still, i would not pay a dollar for a compressed mp3. There's no replacement (yet) for buying albums.

saint.duo 04-20-2004 09:54 PM

I agree. I only buy iTunes music store albums when the price difference is gross ($19 store vs $10 itms).

I am curious about this xfactor, but that link above doesn't seem to take me anywhere. I searched for it on yahoo and came up with a bunch of companies. Where do I get xfactor?

intrntmn 04-20-2004 10:56 PM

Poisoned works for me.

cudaboy_71 04-20-2004 11:53 PM

xfactor download link

BigDave 04-21-2004 02:20 AM

I'm amazed that no-one's mentioned Bittorrent yet!

Azureus!

(the best bittorrent client)

MBHockey 04-21-2004 07:09 PM

XFactor was just updated: Link

Native BitTorrent support coming soon.

msmercury01 04-21-2004 07:46 PM

Ok, I clicked on the Xfactor link and i read it but i don't quite understand. I already have Limewire and I like it fine except that there aren't as many files to choose from as some of the others. So what if I download Xfactor? Does that mean I don't need Limewire anymore? Why?

A (rather lame) parallel would be:
If you used AppleWorks to write all your text document and then one day installed MS Office. They both do the same thing. One is slightly more 'acceptable' to the world at large. You won't need AppleWorks anymore, you have MS Office now to do the same thing. Stick with what you're comfortable with.

msmercury01 04-21-2004 09:21 PM

Thanks so much for that explanation.
If they are the same thing then what do they mean by this: "XFactor currently supports the following networks:
• Gnutella (Shareaza, Gnucleus, LimeWire, Bearshare, XoloX)
• OpenFT (A new network developed by the giFT project)
• FastTrack (Used by clients such as iMesh and Grokster)
• BitTorrent (Currently being tested, not in current version)

Sorry for sounding like a moron. Thanks for being patient.
Teri

Well, my analogy was more apt then I thought!
Basically all those applicatons are the same things, doing the same thing, but not necessarily tothe same servers/remote machines. So while you might use LimeWire and connect to only other machines running limewire, with this app you can expand your horizons and connect to other machines running different apps. Thereby expanding your searching/pirating capabilities. Pirating BAD!

msmercury01 04-21-2004 10:17 PM

Yay! I finally got it! ha ha ha thanks for explaining. ;)

Check out www.allofmp3.com, and some information at http://www.museekster.com/allofmp3info.htm

Do a google search for "allofmp3.com" and "legal", and you'll discover tons of threads discussing the legality or illegality of this service.

Essentially, this is a business in Moscow that sells music files for pennies each... the RIAA has no jurisdiction in Russia, and the Russian government has an organization called ROMS that handles intellectual property issues. Within Russia, this service is legal. Whether someone in the U.S. can legally download the files is at issue, but check it out for yourself.

I'm surprised no ones yet mentioned both Overnet and IRC - great resources for the anti-navy minded.

Overnet is (at the moment, GUI on the way) a text-based client and is really meant for always-on connections and produces great results if you just leave it and forget about it for a few days. IRC is always worth it if you can stand wasting a few hours and having to deal with pimply teenagers who haven't seen the light of day since the last Trekkie convention.

Not that I use or condone such methods - but it's good to know whats out there. And, as always, "it's better to be a pirate than part of the navy" (Steve Jobs). Wonder if he'd say the same now? ;)

Looks like we might get the real thing

was looking around and found this...

http://www.eeoh.com.au/chris/folio/i.../kazaamac.html

says it's a "proof of concept", but the guy claims to have done the wintel version as well - could mean somethings coming

This is as good a time as any to point out that the Russian government does not set the policy of this forum. (Not even the 1945 variant.) :)

Having said that, as long as this thread remains clean and about software that does indeed have legitimate uses, it will remain open. If people start pointing to sites for swapping questionable content, it won't. Just a precautionary reminder.

Thanks; carry on.

Depends on what type of stuff you're trying to DL. Personally, for the files I like to "Trade" I use xNap from sourceforge that connects to OpenNap servers (and winMx type servers) (problem is that napigator which stores the server locations is currently down so you'd need to find someone with a server list you can borrow)
