Hi gsahli,
> For the photosmart, install the hpijs and ESP ghostscript that I linked to > > above. With great interest reading this thread. I just installed a D-LINK G321 printer server and it works with XP and Linux PCs well. I have a photosmart 1215 printer, and my iMAC runs OS X 10.1.x. I can't get the printing working through the printer server. My questions: - does the above mentioned hpijs and ESP gs works with osx 10.1 for photosmart ? - the D-LINK has the Appletalk option also. will I be able to use Appletalk instead of TCP/IP LPD protocol for iMAC printing? thanks in advance. |
Lost In The Mud :)
I tried to do what dvaskelis suggested, though I am still a little lost. It was easy to select Add in the print list, then select IP Printing at the top, then enter the server name from the bottom of the printserver plus the _P2 for parallel port, but where do you find the printer address? He mentions using a static address, but since the sw that came with the print server doesn't work, how do I find what address the printserver is using?
Also, since the printserver only has one USB port, can you attach two USB printers by using a USB hub? I am trying to hook up an HP OfficeJet 6110xi for color printing, faxing, scanning, and copying, and a less expensive to operate Brother HL-14 laser printer for other printing |
No workie :(

OS: Mac OS X 10.3.8 "Panther" Network: 100Mbit wired, 54Mbit wireless (Airport Express) (have tried both) Print server: WORKING: TRENDnet TE100-P1U NOT WORKING: Linksys WPS54GU2 Wireless Print Server Printer: Samsung CLP-500 color laser printer I just upgraded my print server, from a cheap 'n cheesy TRENDnet part to a swanky new Linksys wireless print server. I did this because (A) I'll soon be moving the printers to a different part of the apartment and I really do NOT want to have to run cable out to there; and (B) I'll shortly be getting a black/white laser printer and this way both the b/w and color printer can hang off a single print server. Unfortunately, things are NOT working as planned. I followed dvaskelis' directions *to the letter*, giving my Linksys print server a static IP address, using that in the LPD/LPR settings box, and copying down the default server name from the sticker on the bottom of the Linksys, and using "<defaultservername>_P2" as the port (since I have the Samsung hooked up through the USB port). Unfortunately, when I go to click "print", NOTHING happens. The "network activity" light on both my hub/switch/Airport and the Linksys flicker a few times, but nothing ever comes out of the printer, and my printer acts as if NO data has EVER been sent to it. Unfortunately there are no helpful error messages on the Mac end of things; I just get the "printer with the red ! mark" icon when I do alt-tab. I just now checked the CUPS configuration page (http://localhost:631/) and in the entry for my printer, it says "Control file sent successfully"; yet, again, I never get a printout. For reference, here's the details from my printer's configuration entry in CUPS: Description: LK97F5D2_P2 on 192.168.2.200 Location: Printer State: processing, accepting jobs. "Control file sent successfully" Device URI: lpd://192.168.2.200/LK97F5D2_P2 I've tried using the Linksys both in wired and wireless mode. Same results. Please note that this *exact* setup worked *perfectly* with the old TRENDnet print server; if I unplug the Linksys and plug the TRENDnet back in, and change my printer configuration in Printer Setup Utiltiy, I can print as much and as often as I want to, with no errors. I have NOT recently performed any software updates or other reconfigurations (except for changing around printer configurations in Printer Setup Utility). Also note that printing to the Linksys box works *perfectly* from my Windows laptop, whether it be connected with a wire or wireless. Any ideas? Help!!! Thanks in advance. |
dburr,
I think you should try L1, L2 without the server name for print queue. |
naiming01,
I don't remember enough about 10.1.x to help you. I know the hpijs and ghostscript won't work with it because it doesn't use CUPS for its print control system. |
stuck on same problem
i have a mac mini with os x 10.3.8
just setting it up and trying to make it work with my pre-existing linksys WPS54GU2 and Canon i960. i followed the instructions to add the printer (added the IP address - which it recognized - and the queue name). it didn't have my printer as a choice (so i left it at a generic canon). i then tried to print a doc and it hangs (and eventually stops) at "control file sent successfully." i went to the canon website and downloaded a driver for OSX... went back in to see if i could change the printer - couldn't figure that out, so tried to add a new printer again (still don't see i960 in the list). either way it doesn't work. any thoughts? |
Got Appletalk To Work!!!!!!
After many painstaking hours of trying IP,LPD,Appletalk, etc., I decided to change the "Printer Object Type" in the linksys tool to "PostScript". Suddenly, things are working. My printer driver wasn't listed, so the colors are a bit off, but beggars can't be choosers.
What I now can't figure out is the fact that when I returned to the Linksys tool, the type is set back to "LaserWriter". I am scared to touch it now in fear that it will stop working. If anyone has ideas on what made it suddenly work, please share!!!!!! |
A success story with the Wireless-G PrintServer WPS54GU2
ok, so Appletalk:
AFAIK, you have to have a postscript compatible printer (=LaserWriter object type)... so my LaserJet 1300+ was found and working without issue, but the OfficeJet d135 would not work. installed ESP ghostscript and HPIJS/Foomatic from the disk images at linuxprinting.org. Something went screwy with the printserver at this point, so I reset it and configured it entirely from the browser interface, disabling NetBEUI and Appletalk. only used the two services you can't turn off: IPP and LPR Configured the Windows machines to use IPP (192.168.1.253/ipp/P1 [parallel] or 192.168.253/ipp/P2 [usb]) apple machines were set with (protocol) lpr:// (manually set server address) 192.168.1.253 (queue) L2 and filled in descriptive names for everything else. linuxprinting HPIJS/Foomatic supports both printers, so i used those drivers. for the officejet (attached parallel port so the usb can be used for scanning) (queue) L1 and all worked wonderfully. Thanks for the LPR insight. |
Instructions for Wireless Printing with HP Officejet d135

The statement above suggested it might not be possible to get this printer working wirelessly w/ a Mac - at least not w/ AppleTalk. Apparently, however, it is possible - if not w/ AppleTalk.... Matthew |
worked for hp psc 2410

I was pulling my hair out trying to get the Mac to print to my HP PSC 2410 All-in-one through the Linksys Wireless Print Server. The really frustrating part was that I could print from my Linux system and also from XP. For whatever reason, I didn't have to specify a print server name from the Linux system. I followed the instructions from subvertigo and it worked like a charm! |
Linksys Wireless Print Server - Quick guide to install on Mac OSX & a HP Printer
I bought the Linksys Wireless Print Server and of course it worked straight away with XP laptop, but not OSX, managed to print out loads of pages with PostScript commands on them, then I check the HP website and read that my printer HP DJ 5652 as well as many others supports HP Printer Servers, I also read that some HP printers are supported of out the box on OSX (Intel) why not PPC like my iMAC(G5) ??
Guide ;
Now you have tricked OSX to think it was connecting to a HP IP Print Server when it was the Linksys. Good to know : *** You can Administer the Linksys Wireless Print Server through a web browser just note down the IP on a Windows PC using or read your DHCP client list in your Router/Wireless Router. If you are asked to authenticate/logon leave the username blank and put the password if already setup (that's why there is a reset hole on the device a pin works fine) or set a password when entering the first time. ** I recommend fixing an IP otherwise the IP address can change with DHCP lease. |
I've meddled with this PrintServer also and have found that following the instructions by dvaskelis works for some printers. The difference in the printers can come in naming the "Queue Name." On my HP printer that's hooked up to the parallel port, I followed dvaskelis's technique in using <ServerName>_P1. However, on my Epson stylus attached to my USB port, I just entered in "L2" as the port. If I did dvaskelis's way on my Epson (i.e., using <ServerName>_P2), I got pages of gibberish printing out from my parallel printer.

Instructions from Linksys
I got help from Linksys support, and while they said they don't support Macs, that these following steps are known to work. I just did them and they do indeed:
- On your Mac, open System Preferences and select Print & Fax. Click on the "+" icon (lower left) to add a printer. Click on the IP Printer icon (top). Select "Line Printer Daemon – LPD" and do the following: - In the Address field, enter the IP address of the Print Server - In the Queue field, enter L1. - In the Name field, enter L1. - Select the printer manufacturer from the pull down menu. - Select the printer model from the scroll box - Click "Add". - A window should appear showing your newly added printer "L1". Click L1 once to select it. Then click "Printer Setup" (middle right). The Printer Setup window will open. Click on the "Installable Options" pulldown menu and select "Name & Location". The Name and Location window will open. Do the following: - Change Printer Name to the IP address of Print Server - Change Location to IP_[ip of WPS54GU2]P1 - Click on Apply Changes. The Mac is now ready to print. I followed the steps. Most important, make sure the Location is correct. My print server is on 192.168.1.104. And I've connected the printer to the P2 port. So, set Location to IP_192.168.1.104P2. You can change the name after that and it will print fine. |
HELP with Linksys LK95BB7A_P2, HP DeskJet 895cse and Mac OS x
I am having problems setting up my mac with the print server.
I've read the suggestions listed here, but am pretty new/green to this. where do I find the IP address of the Print Server? |

You can also run Network Utility (in your Utilities folder) and find the printer's IP in the Netstat display.

Linksys part
This is a Linksys part. Has anyone tried (succeeded?) in setting up one of these, or something like it, on OSX?
I'm working on the same problem. This weekend I'm going to see if I could set up a share on my Win2K server then map to that from the Mac. |
