Wireless-G PrintServer for USB 2.0 WPS54GU2

This is a Linksys part. Has anyone tried (succeeded?) in setting up one of these, or something like it, on OSX?

I'm working on the same problem. This weekend I'm going to see if I could set up a share on my Win2K server then map to that from the Mac.

WPS54GU2 Installation issues

Anyone able to give installation instructions for the Linksys WPS54GU2 PrintServer on OSX?

The Linksys technical support does not provide assistance for OSX, but did reference the Not_supp/Manual directory on the installation CD. Unfortunately, this directory on my CD is empty. Not much to go on.

I have successfully assigned the PrintServer an IP address and accessed it via the browser. But am confused by the Printer/Logical Port page. Information on what the "Get Data" button does for me and how I can otherwise configure a Printer through this page, and then subsequently via the Printer Setup Utility Application is appreciated.

I don't have a LinkSys server, but I think you need to consider the brand/model of printer, too. Most manufacturer-provided drivers won't support network printing. (Exception: HP nearly always supports appletalk - but LinkSys wireless devices don't) Panther has the open source Gimp-Print drivers installed just for that reason - if your printer is supported by Gimp-Print, you're in business. If not, or you're using Jaguar, check out linuxprinting:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/

Note: IP/LPR is one of the most widely supported protocols for print servers. To set it up correctly in OS X, you'll need to enter the queue name for the device. LinkSys frequently uses L1, but lp, lpt, or lp1 are common too.

Hope this helps.

dvaskelis 12-04-2004 06:24 PM

Got it to work...

Via IP Printing
Printer Type: LPD/LPR
Printer Address: I set my WPS54GU2 to use a static address
Queue Name: SERVERNAME_P1 (for parallel port) or SERVERNAME_P2 (for USB)

SERVERNAME is the name on the sticker on the bottom. The device name you specify in setup will not work, it must be the default server name.

Note that "Internet Printing Protocol" doesn't seem to work even though the WPS54GU2 supports IPP. I'm using Mac OS X 10.3.6.

Obviously, it's a printer that needs to have Mac support, which usually means a PostScript printer. If the printer doesn't support a Mac, you can try something like Gimp-Print or Ghostscript.

jrakes 01-04-2005 07:37 PM

when I try this, a document starts to print and then there is a message that the controle file was accepted and then nothing happens. I had it working until we got cable and reconfigured the network. Seems like it might have been through the Printer Utility, option-add, advanced, LPR-LPD, but I don't recall how to enter the lpr:// field: I'm pretty sure it accepted the name the configuration software had given the printserver (in my case "Lexmark510Server" (based on the printer connected to my Linksys Print Server). I believe it may have been // ~lexmark510server_p2 , but can't get it to work now . . . Anyone else set this up successfully for OS X?

ticklishturtle 01-09-2005 02:04 PM

Do it like dvaskelis says

Yes, I got it working by following dvaskelis' instructions precisely as he/she describes.

Are you talking about the "Printer Address" field of the OSX printer setup? Just enter the IP Address itself -- without "lpr://" or anything else.

BTW, thanks so much to dvaskelis for figuring this out -- I hinted your post ;). I just returned to the Mac after a 15-yr hiatus. Getting stuff like this to work helps ease my concerns about whether I'll be able to do the same tricks w/ it as I do w/ my PC. :)

I just am to slow

I am trying to set up my moms computer for the Linksys Wireless G Server and it is not naking sense to me quite yet. If any one would mind posting the dumbed down version of this please do so. My mom and I would both greatly appreciate your time. Thanks for all your help eveyone.

I got mine setup the way advaskelis' instructions describes. If you still need help let me know.

Just slow

I really need a step by step detailed method to making this work because I havent touched an apple since before they were cool the first time. If you could make it so that a four year old can follow directions that would be much appreciated. You guys rock.

Even though I do not have the print server originally mentioned in this thread (I have Hawking Technology HWPS12UG (2 USB + 1 Parallel Port Wireless G Print Server)), I have tried dvaskelis method but received the same result as jrakes. The "Control file..." message followed by nothing.

Both my PC laptops print just fine to either printer, so I must assume it is not a printer server issue, but I am unable to print at all, through the print server, using the Mac. I am a very new Mac user so I'm rather stumped by this. And feel free to talk to me like I'm a two year old in regards to the set up. I am willing to learn. As a side note, each printer will print fine when connected locally to the Mac's USB ports, so printer compatibility is not an issue. This leaves me with only the assumption that the Mac is not configured correctly, and most likely simply due to ignorance on my part.

Thanks in advance,

James

Folks:
Like I said, the printer model you are trying to ADD is important info if you want some help. Most non-postscript printer drivers from the manufacturers don't support network printing, and we need to direct you to where to get open-source drivers for you printer.
Then, after we eliminate the driver as the problem, we can help you with setup instructions.

My two printers are:

HP Photosmart 7150

Lexmark E232 laserprinter

gsahli 01-18-2005 03:38 PM

Hi, James_31k,
It looks like your Lexmark is HP compatible. ADD it in Printer setup using IP/LPR, put in a queue name that's specific to the port on the Hawking where the Lexmark is connected, then, for model choose "HP Laserjet 4 Series, CUPS." (you can experiment with HP LJ 5 Series, too).

For the Photosmart, you need to install the hpijs and ESP ghostscript driver set from:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/

Then use the IP/LPR technique again (this will be a different queue name!) and choose the model that says your printer + "foomatic, hpijs."

Let us know how it goes.

PS - here's a site with help for Hawking servers.
http://www.unixwiz.net/tools/hpsutil.html

Info from Hawking about queue names:
10) I'm having trouble setting up my printer ports for my PS12U. It can't find the right port. What is going on?
Depending on which port you are using, make sure you use the following as the port names (queue names).
Parallel port: lp1
First USB port: lp2
Second USB port: lp3

osxinanxpworld 01-18-2005 06:01 PM

So I just cant follow directions

I have an HP that is network compatiable on my two Xp based computers. The model is HP PhotoSmart 2610. Also where is the IP Priniting Menu if I can get a hold of this than I should be able to follow the earlier directions that you refernced to. Sorry I come off as such a dope but I thought I had already posted which printer I had and that it was compatiable (i think). Hopefully this is everything that you need for this. Thanks a lot everybody for your help I obviously need it.

gsahli 01-18-2005 06:33 PM

Hi, osxinanxpworld,
I guess (?) you're using Jaguar. On Jaguar IP printing is in the advanced comm options (I think -- my 10.2 computer is at school) -- to get Advanced, Hold down the Option key while clicking ADD, then find advanced at the bottom of the first pull-down.

And you are talking about a separate print server device, right? That's what this thread is about.

Here's the kicker - the Photosmart model drivers from HP "May" have appletalk - but they don't support any other network comm protocol on OS X. The HP non-postscript drivers All bypass CUPS, so what you get is whatever they wrote the driver for (usually USB and appletalk), not all the comm protocols CUPS has in the Add Printer dialog. This is very different from Windows, where every driver conforms to Microsoft's interface specs.

For the photosmart, install the hpijs and ESP ghostscript that I linked to above.

osxinanxpworld 01-19-2005 10:54 PM

Almost there

Thanks for all your help so far. I have managed to download and install the Hjips and DhostScript apps like you recommended but Im still having problems. When I select which port is active the computer sends a signal to my printer and prints a page but then when I want to select what type pf printer this actually is I cann't. This is because my HP Photosmart2610 or 2600 does not appear as an option on the HP printer list. Is there any way to update that or find a compatiable choice on the list? Another thought is if the printer driver for usb connection is currently on my computer will that prevent it from appearing on the list of supported ip/tp printers? Thanks again for all your help in getting this working I really appreciate it.

gsahli 01-20-2005 12:38 AM

Sorry, I didn't know yours isn't in the list. I'd try the PSC 2210 choice.

If you need more help, please try to answer previous questions - like are you using Jaguar?

Good luck.

osxinanxpworld 01-23-2005 11:56 AM

No luck

I tried using the printer you suggested but it failed. My mom is using what we think it is Jaguar the Mac OS version is 10.3.7 according to the system bios. If there is anything else I can do to help you help me that would be great. Thanks alot.

gsahli 01-23-2005 06:02 PM

When you say it failed, we need to know a lot more details - like how the printer is connected, what steps you did on the PC (if that's what you did) and what steps you did on the Mac to ADD the printer in Printer Setup.
I hope you'll experiment with other printer models when you ADD the printer - I think one or two different model choices will drive your printer in any setup.
By the way, what you have, 10.3.7 is Panther (best/newest).

Review this to see if you've done all the right steps for Windows Printing.
http://www.efelix.co.uk/tech/3004.html

Really want to help - but not sure we're communicating!

naiming01 01-24-2005 10:19 PM

Hi gsahli,

> For the photosmart, install the hpijs and ESP ghostscript that I linked to >
> above.

With great interest reading this thread. I just installed a D-LINK G321
printer server and it works with XP and Linux PCs well. I have a
photosmart 1215 printer, and my iMAC runs OS X 10.1.x. I can't get
the printing working through the printer server. My questions:
- does the above mentioned hpijs and ESP gs works with osx 10.1 for
photosmart ?
- the D-LINK has the Appletalk option also. will I be able to use Appletalk
instead of TCP/IP LPD protocol for iMAC printing?

thanks in advance.

Lost In The Mud :)

I tried to do what dvaskelis suggested, though I am still a little lost. It was easy to select Add in the print list, then select IP Printing at the top, then enter the server name from the bottom of the printserver plus the _P2 for parallel port, but where do you find the printer address? He mentions using a static address, but since the sw that came with the print server doesn't work, how do I find what address the printserver is using?

Also, since the printserver only has one USB port, can you attach two USB printers by using a USB hub? I am trying to hook up an HP OfficeJet 6110xi for color printing, faxing, scanning, and copying, and a less expensive to operate Brother HL-14 laser printer for other printing

dburr 02-14-2005 12:02 AM

Note that "Internet Printing Protocol" doesn't seem to work even though the WPS54GU2 supports IPP. I'm using Mac OS X 10.3.6.

Obviously, it's a printer that needs to have Mac support, which usually means a PostScript printer. If the printer doesn't support a Mac, you can try something like Gimp-Print or Ghostscript.

Computer: G5 single 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM
OS: Mac OS X 10.3.8 "Panther"
Network: 100Mbit wired, 54Mbit wireless (Airport Express) (have tried both)
Print server:
WORKING: TRENDnet TE100-P1U
NOT WORKING: Linksys WPS54GU2 Wireless Print Server
Printer: Samsung CLP-500 color laser printer

I just upgraded my print server, from a cheap 'n cheesy TRENDnet part to a swanky new Linksys wireless print server. I did this because (A) I'll soon be moving the printers to a different part of the apartment and I really do NOT want to have to run cable out to there; and (B) I'll shortly be getting a black/white laser printer and this way both the b/w and color printer can hang off a single print server.

Unfortunately, things are NOT working as planned.

I followed dvaskelis' directions *to the letter*, giving my Linksys print server a static IP address, using that in the LPD/LPR settings box, and copying down the default server name from the sticker on the bottom of the Linksys, and using "<defaultservername>_P2" as the port (since I have the Samsung hooked up through the USB port).

Unfortunately, when I go to click "print", NOTHING happens. The "network activity" light on both my hub/switch/Airport and the Linksys flicker a few times, but nothing ever comes out of the printer, and my printer acts as if NO data has EVER been sent to it. Unfortunately there are no helpful error messages on the Mac end of things; I just get the "printer with the red ! mark" icon when I do alt-tab.

I just now checked the CUPS configuration page (http://localhost:631/) and in the entry for my printer, it says "Control file sent successfully"; yet, again, I never get a printout.

For reference, here's the details from my printer's configuration entry in CUPS:

Description: LK97F5D2_P2 on 192.168.2.200
Location:
Printer State: processing, accepting jobs.
"Control file sent successfully"
Device URI: lpd://192.168.2.200/LK97F5D2_P2

I've tried using the Linksys both in wired and wireless mode. Same results.

Please note that this *exact* setup worked *perfectly* with the old TRENDnet print server; if I unplug the Linksys and plug the TRENDnet back in, and change my printer configuration in Printer Setup Utiltiy, I can print as much and as often as I want to, with no errors. I have NOT recently performed any software updates or other reconfigurations (except for changing around printer configurations in Printer Setup Utility).

Also note that printing to the Linksys box works *perfectly* from my Windows laptop, whether it be connected with a wire or wireless.

Any ideas? Help!!! Thanks in advance.

gsahli 02-14-2005 03:34 PM

dburr,
I think you should try L1, L2 without the server name for print queue.

gsahli 02-14-2005 03:37 PM

naiming01,
I don't remember enough about 10.1.x to help you. I know the hpijs and ghostscript won't work with it because it doesn't use CUPS for its print control system.

znewbie 03-18-2005 02:37 AM

stuck on same problem

i have a mac mini with os x 10.3.8

just setting it up and trying to make it work with my pre-existing linksys WPS54GU2 and Canon i960. i followed the instructions to add the printer (added the IP address - which it recognized - and the queue name). it didn't have my printer as a choice (so i left it at a generic canon). i then tried to print a doc and it hangs (and eventually stops) at "control file sent successfully."

i went to the canon website and downloaded a driver for OSX... went back in to see if i could change the printer - couldn't figure that out, so tried to add a new printer again (still don't see i960 in the list). either way it doesn't work.

any thoughts?

Got Appletalk To Work!!!!!!

After many painstaking hours of trying IP,LPD,Appletalk, etc., I decided to change the "Printer Object Type" in the linksys tool to "PostScript". Suddenly, things are working. My printer driver wasn't listed, so the colors are a bit off, but beggars can't be choosers.

What I now can't figure out is the fact that when I returned to the Linksys tool, the type is set back to "LaserWriter". I am scared to touch it now in fear that it will stop working.

If anyone has ideas on what made it suddenly work, please share!!!!!!

A success story with the Wireless-G PrintServer WPS54GU2

ok, so Appletalk:
AFAIK, you have to have a postscript compatible printer (=LaserWriter object type)... so my LaserJet 1300+ was found and working without issue, but the OfficeJet d135 would not work.

installed ESP ghostscript and HPIJS/Foomatic from the disk images at linuxprinting.org.

Something went screwy with the printserver at this point, so I reset it and configured it entirely from the browser interface, disabling NetBEUI and Appletalk. only used the two services you can't turn off: IPP and LPR

Configured the Windows machines to use IPP (192.168.1.253/ipp/P1 [parallel] or 192.168.253/ipp/P2 [usb])

apple machines were set with
(protocol) lpr://
(manually set server address) 192.168.1.253
(queue) L2
and filled in descriptive names for everything else. linuxprinting HPIJS/Foomatic supports both printers, so i used those drivers.
for the officejet (attached parallel port so the usb can be used for scanning)
(queue) L1

and all worked wonderfully. Thanks for the LPR insight.

FYI - This page includes instructions for wireless printing w/ HP Officejet d135. (Search on "d135.")

The statement above suggested it might not be possible to get this printer working wirelessly w/ a Mac - at least not w/ AppleTalk. Apparently, however, it is possible - if not w/ AppleTalk....

Just wanted to say, "Thanks!".

I was pulling my hair out trying to get the Mac to print to my HP PSC 2410 All-in-one through the Linksys Wireless Print Server. The really frustrating part was that I could print from my Linux system and also from XP. For whatever reason, I didn't have to specify a print server name from the Linux system.

I followed the instructions from subvertigo and it worked like a charm!

Linksys Wireless Print Server - Quick guide to install on Mac OSX & a HP Printer

I bought the Linksys Wireless Print Server and of course it worked straight away with XP laptop, but not OSX, managed to print out loads of pages with PostScript commands on them, then I check the HP website and read that my printer HP DJ 5652 as well as many others supports HP Printer Servers, I also read that some HP printers are supported of out the box on OSX (Intel) why not PPC like my iMAC(G5) ??

Guide ;
  • I removed my old USB link to the Printer.
  • Then I downloaded the latest HP Installer and ran the install.
  • Go to "System Preferences"
  • Click on “Print & Fax”
  • Click the “+” button.
  • Click on “More Printers…”
  • Choose “HP IP Printing” and manual (** auto may work for you, but see my reason below why I choose manual) and type & assign an IP, should be the same as configured in the Print Server(*** see below how to).
  • You’ll see the Printer appear;
  • You’ll now see the HP Printer installed after clicking “add”

Now you have tricked OSX to think it was connecting to a HP IP Print Server when it was the Linksys.

Good to know : *** You can Administer the Linksys Wireless Print Server through a web browser just note down the IP on a Windows PC using or read your DHCP client list in your Router/Wireless Router.

If you are asked to authenticate/logon leave the username blank and put the password if already setup (that's why there is a reset hole on the device a pin works fine) or set a password when entering the first time.

** I recommend fixing an IP otherwise the IP address can change with DHCP lease.

pup975 02-03-2007 04:08 PM

I've meddled with this PrintServer also and have found that following the instructions by dvaskelis works for some printers. The difference in the printers can come in naming the "Queue Name." On my HP printer that's hooked up to the parallel port, I followed dvaskelis's technique in using <ServerName>_P1. However, on my Epson stylus attached to my USB port, I just entered in "L2" as the port. If I did dvaskelis's way on my Epson (i.e., using <ServerName>_P2), I got pages of gibberish printing out from my parallel printer.

Instructions from Linksys

I got help from Linksys support, and while they said they don't support Macs, that these following steps are known to work. I just did them and they do indeed:

- On your Mac, open System Preferences and select Print & Fax. Click on the "+" icon (lower left) to add a printer. Click on the IP Printer icon (top). Select "Line Printer Daemon – LPD" and do the following:
- In the Address field, enter the IP address of the Print Server
- In the Queue field, enter L1.
- In the Name field, enter L1.
- Select the printer manufacturer from the pull down menu.
- Select the printer model from the scroll box
- Click "Add".
- A window should appear showing your newly added printer "L1". Click L1 once to select it. Then click "Printer Setup" (middle right). The Printer Setup window will open. Click on the "Installable Options" pulldown menu and select "Name & Location". The Name and Location window will open.

Do the following:
- Change Printer Name to the IP address of Print Server
- Change Location to IP_[ip of WPS54GU2]P1
- Click on Apply Changes.
The Mac is now ready to print.

I followed the steps. Most important, make sure the Location is correct. My print server is on 192.168.1.104. And I've connected the printer to the P2 port. So, set Location to IP_192.168.1.104P2. You can change the name after that and it will print fine.

Do you know the IP address to access your Print Server's settings? If you do, that's your IP address. If you don't, you can go to your wireless router's setting (you'll need the IP address of the router, usually 192.168.0.x), and look at the log to see what ip address your wireless router assigned to your Print Server.

Las_Vegas 12-17-2007 02:37 PM

You can also run Network Utility (in your Utilities folder) and find the printer's IP in the Netstat display.

Linksys part

This is a Linksys part. Has anyone tried (succeeded?) in setting up one of these, or something like it, on OSX?

I'm working on the same problem. This weekend I'm going to see if I could set up a share on my Win2K server then map to that from the Mac.
