remove picture from sent mail
I can not remove picture from my sent mail. This is not my signature picture. I am using Mail on Panther. I removed pictures from .mac account on line, removed picture from my address book and removed picture from ~Library application support address book, images . Also removed tiff with the same name as the account from ~library- application support-syncService-LastSync Data-addressBook-Images.
Where is that little devil...Thanks |
It can be easier to answer, if you ask a question, something about a picture that you're trying to delete, I guess?
The picture included with a sent email is a part of that email, is it not? If you delete a copy of that pciture from everywhere else, it's still a part of that sent email, right? You have to delete the sent mail (from your 'sent' mailbox (or at least pull the picture out of that copy of your sent mail.) |
the photo always appears on my sent mail. It is a photo that i used to have in address book next to my name, the user name.
|
I think that may be in your Signature, which is one of the settings in your Mail Preferences...I never use signatures, so I'm not sure, but you should check yours.
|
Not a signature picture. I have a signature picture that appears under my email on the left margin. This picture appears on top of email 1/3 from right margin.
|
Send an email to yourself. Does it appear in the email you receive?
|
The picture appears in email to myself.
|
Under Mail Preferences, in the 'Composing' pane, if I deselect:
Addressing: When sending to a group, show all member addresses. then the little picture is no longer included. I think that perhaps this severs some link to the address book where it picks this little picture up. You are talking about the 'login' picture or your account picture aren't you. There might be some other way to remove it. |
Using Panter?
I just checked mine and noticed it was there too. Go to System Preferences → Accounts → Picture → Edit Now in the Edit pane drag whatever image is there out of the box. Leave it on the grey area and it will go away.... all of the time. |
If you open ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist with pico and then find the line
<key>ShowPresence</key> <true/> and change it to <key>ShowPresence</key> <false/> this will prevent the little picture from appearing (in the mail you send) without changing the checkbox of the Preferences entry which I mentioned above. [Edited to add the parenthetical statement above for clarity.] |

you guys are leaving me in the dust.
I googled Pico, a text editor, scarry, i've never used one or been there. I will download Pico and see how it goes. Thanks... |
pico is already on your Macintosh.
In terminal type: cd ~/Library/Preferences and then cp com.apple.mail.plist com.apple.mail.plist.orig to save a copy in case you make a mistake while editing. Then type pico com.apple.mail.plist You are now editing Mail's preference file. If you change something that you did not intend to change, type Control-X and and then select the 'N' key to say you don't want to save any changes. Type Control-W (for a search) and they type 'Presence' and hit the Enter key. It will take you down to the correct place in the preference file. Use the arrow keys to move to the / at the end of the word 'true' (just below the line with 'ShowPresence' on it) and use the delete key to erase the word true. Type the word false in, (taking care that the edited line says <false/> and then type Control-O (the letter Oh) to save. Then type Control-X to exit the file. That should do it. |
Ooops. I tried your suggestion macmath and it didn't seem to change showing the account picture in there. It is still there on my mails.
Could the "Presence" be referring to whether or not a Chat buddy is online? Just as a note, I sent a mail to one of my spamcatcher accounts and the pic did not show up in it, but does show up in all of my sent messages, as well as messages sent to me. Dmyer Since pictures can be used in the address book - and this looks like a function of the address book, if you give someone a picture in your address book does their picture show up in email if it is from them? |
I don't have any other pictures in my address book.
Did your response to macmath suggest that it will not fix the problem? In the terminal does the first line "cd~/Library..." start as a new line or does it follow my name%. |
The reply to macmath was that it did not work on my machine, and I think the key he is talking about is to show Rend(Ican'tspelltherest)vous or Chat persons online - but I could be wrong...
The lines in the terminal should look like below. It starts on the line with your name. There is a space between the cd and the ~ Code:
[mine:~] eric% cd ~/Library/Preferences |
That is strange, because it still works on mine...
I can't even tell you to quit Mail and then restart it, because I did not do so. Did you go back in with pico or more and verify that it is changed? |
I shut down mail.
Edited the line. Restarted Mail. It was still there. Quit mail. Restart. Still there. Checked the plist again (after your suggestion). Still there. Sorry. |
Recant, and new solution offered.
For some reason if I send to another email address of mine (different than my ISP) I *do* get the picture, even with that key set to false. But if I send to the email address of my ISP, I do not get the picture with that key set to false, and sometimes I do not get the picture with that key set to true. Originally I did not test with email addresses other than that one. So it really doesn't work.
Another potential solution: Go to your Address Book and edit your entry. Drag your picture out of the picture field the way schwartze said to do with the Accounts Preference pane. That seems to have worked for me (with two email addresses). |
perhaps it's maintained in a cache somewhere?

Kinda miss the little MacSmile though. Might have to put it back. |
I just went to my .mac online page and went to preferences in mail account. I had the photo box un- checked. I checked the photo box and chose a new photo and emailed myself. There it was, a new photo. Went back online and removed the photo and unchecked the photo box and emailed myself again. Still there. Does that help you guys?
|
That's too bad that removing it from the Address Book removes it from the Accounts Pane. I still want it there.
Back to the drawing board. |
I thought following these directions after removing the photo from .mac mail preferences and not uploading a new photo would be the solution. Nope.

Have you removed the picture from your card in your Address book?
I know this also removes it from the login, and I will also guess iChat, but at the moment, this is all we have got. |
I removed picture fron address book long ago. I even deleted the vcard and created new one. I will use one of my alternative mac accounts as sender where the picture does not show up.
|
After you've deleted the picture from the Users panel in System Prefs (and the Address Book, if necessary), go to /Library/Caches. You'll see some files with titles like com.apple.user503.PictureCache.tiff. Find the tiff that matches the picture and trash it. Restart System Prefs, Address Card, Mail etc. Now, your picture will be restart to the default silhouette with the blue starry background.
I'm not sure if this is the solution that you want, seeing that it deletes the picture system-wide. |
The picture is not in any of those folders. I don't have a 503 folder. Should I? The picture was added on line at .mac mail in the preference window. Thanks...
|
Hello folks,
I found this thread through a search and noticed it's very old, but I was able to remove my picture by deleting my card from the address book. |
