one last vpc 5.0/panther effort

I know this has been addressed previously, but just to make sure:

Is there a workaround/solution to the vpc 5.0/Panther problem? I have tried to install 5.0/Windows XP and get the same problems others have had. (a kernel extension that was installed incorrectly; program begins to load then freezes the entire computer etc.) I have not seen a solution; wondering if anyone has hit on one OR is it just a lost cause? It did work with Jaguar.
Thanks
Dave

Hmmm, I have been running VPC 5 (5.04) with no problems. I installed it under 10.1 (10.2?) and it has continued to work through the upgrades to 10.3.

In fact, when I did a clean install of Panther, I just 'drag and drop' installed VPC from its old partition.

Is it something with the XP install of the actual VPC app install?

Have you tried W98 (which is what I am using).

Not much help, sorry...

Bruce Miller 11-20-2003 05:20 PM

Are you using the latest 5.0.4 version? I can post it for you if needed.

dbagwill 11-20-2003 06:09 PM

I do not have the 5.0.4; if you could post it, I'd be grateful. I am not sure if this will solve my problem, but worth a try.
As for using another version of the os: I did try 98se with the same results. I think the problem is with vpc itself. I've corrected all the permission issues (as far as I know), done the clean install of Panther etc.
Thanks
Dave

I posted the 5.0.4 updater (10MB) here for you:

http://homepage.mac.com/brucemillerphoto

I'm pretty sure it resolved Panther issues for others (I'm using 6.0.1 now).

dbagwill 11-20-2003 07:06 PM

Thanks Bruce. I'll download and install tonight while my wife is hogging the tube watching Home and Garden TV. :-)

dbagwill 11-21-2003 11:13 AM

Okay, here's what happened:

I did a complete removal of vpc5.0 - not uninstall, actually removed the prefs and other files/folders. Repaired permissions. Shut down and waited a few minutes and tried to center my emotions :-). Reinstalled 5.0. Repaired permissions again. Installed 5.0.4. Repaired permissions. Rebooted.

Then the "authenticate" screen made its appearance. - the one that states "this is the final step in installing vpc". I made sure there were no sharp objects around with which I could harm myself, entered my name and password - and got the same stinkin' message - it will not authenticate me.

Well I blew past that thinking a miracle might happen. It did not. The windows xp window appears and - voila! - the machine freezes up. So I threw the ibook into the duck pond. Well, wanted to.

I'm thinking I've got to lay out the heavy bucks for 6.0. Unless there is any other idea out there!

Thanks for the input
Dave

Dave,

Do you have an earlier archive of 10.1-10.2 you could install the 5.0.4 updater to and then drag and drop into Panther that VPC application? (Since that did work for someone else.)

dbagwill 11-21-2003 01:24 PM

Alas, no. My bad.

When you uninstalled VPC5 first, did you trash the Library/Application Support/Connectix/Virtual PC/VPC 5 Registration file (this is actually where the serial number is stored)?

I actually did trash the Library/Application Support/Connectix folder. I do have the serial number and all on the original disk I bought new. What did you have in mind?

Thanks
Dave

Last suggestion would be to try installing VPC5 on another user you create to log into.

dbagwill 11-21-2003 05:22 PM

That just might work. It worked when I had problems installing Via Voice. Thanks for the reminder.

Refresh my memory, is this a normal apple authentication dialog or is it the VPC license key dialog?

If it is the VPC one, does your key start with something like:

VPM5-

dbagwill 11-21-2003 11:11 PM

The VPM - number (serial number) you refer to works just fine. There is a non-apple, VPC screen that asks for the administrator name and password, as the "final step" in installing vpc.
This is just a home laptop here, nothing fancy. Permissions should not be an issue; I'm the only administrator this machine has ever known, and there has been only one password!
Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Have you had any similar issues with Panther administrator passwords being accepted for other application installs or routine tasks requiring it (such as dismounting a firewire drive, etc.)? No possibility of a space or punctuation character involved?

I dug up my VPC5 and updated to 5.0.4 and got to password authentication without issue as a test on 10.3.1.

I also tried to drag and drop a complete VPC5.0.4 application to .mac to post for you (both zipped and unzipped) but ran into issues with special permissions copying over and failing completion as a clone.

But if that authentication is failing, VPC cannot install properly. Therefore the real question is why is that authentication failing.

Have you made any changes to your admin userid in netinfo manager?

Try this...

create a file (can be anything, just text)
open a finder window.
Select your primary disk
drag and drop the document into the System directory on your primary disk

It should come up with a dialog that says you cannot do it as system cannot be modified. Click the "Authenticate' button and type in your password.

If it works, you can then just delete the file you put there.

If it does not work, report back and we can go from there.

It did work.....

VPC doesn't work with Panther. I spent 10 hrs trying.

Bruce Miller 11-22-2003 05:18 PM

If you're fishing for help from those of us who don't have problems running it, how about a better description of your efforts and results.

stetner 11-22-2003 05:45 PM

Ok, that indicates that your authorization stuff is working. VPC must be using an obsolete authorization method I guess.

Since I did a drag and drop install from my jaguar partition and it still works for me, I know that there should be nothing installed in /System etc. to cause problems.

Therefore I searched the application itself, and it is all owned by me, except for this file:
Code:

$ ll /Applications/Virtual\ PC\ 5.0/Virtual\ PC/Contents/MacOS/VirtualPC_Services
-rwsr-xr-x    1 root    wheel      27248 Jun 17  2002 \
/Applications/Virtual PC 5.0/Virtual PC/Contents/MacOS/VirtualPC_Services*

(edit: above broken to two lines for readability) which is setuid root. So, what I suggest, is to try to do this:
Code:

$ sudo chown root:wheel /Applications/Virtual\ PC\ 5.0/Virtual\ PC/Contents/MacOS/VirtualPC_Services
$ sudo chmod 4755 /Applications/Virtual\ PC\ 5.0/Virtual\ PC/Contents/MacOS/VirtualPC_Services

And see if it works after that.

dbagwill 11-24-2003 12:00 PM

Allrighty. We have gotten past the permissions issue! - the program has accepted my password, asked for and got the serial number of the product, gone through the setup, and is now idling on the "windows is now opening" screen. The next screen should be my windows desktop, but seeing as how it has been 12 hours on the "now opening' screen, my euphoria is somewhat flagging.

Thanks for all the help thus far. Any ideas on this final hurdle?

Dave
