yep, locate "PDF Browser" = nothing is what I wanted to hear.
Go to the Apple Support area, search for "Quicktime Java Update" then download and try* to install the likely candidates (ignore the OS 9 updates). May be the file you want is the one they pulled, if that's the case you may just have to wait until they fix it and rerelease it, info is on Apple Support page. dD *Updater will not run if update is already installed. |

I greatly appreciate your help. I'm having no luck finding the update but will keep searching. |

I am unfortunately experiencing the same problems. In that when I try and open/download a PDF document from Safari it does not download and Adobe does not open up. I posted a similar question at www.appletalk.com.au and they pointed me to this post. If you get an answer please post it so I can fix my Safari as this is annoying. |

thanks for this it worked. Noting it does not work as it used to, but now I can preview a PDF within Safari without downloading it. I might say it only works for Safari. But as this is my preferred browser i do not mind. |
Glad to be of help, secoa. After rereading this whole thread, I would suggest you bring your Panther up to date (10.3.4 - use the Combo) - Safari is at 1.2.2. In fact if it were my machine behaving as you describe, I would consider a nice clean re-install of Panther essential before the update.
|
I am running 10.3.4 with Safari at 1.2.2.
I have never done a clean re-install and am not sure how to do it. Can you point me in the right direction as well as some pointers to be aware of. Thanks |
OK, I was plagued with this same problem- out of the blue, Safari seemed to stop downloading files. Yes, I could Right-Click and do a Save As.., or enter the address of the file and hit Option-Return, etc., but none of this did me any good when it came to certain Java/Javascript pages that required me to click, did a re-direct, and then sent a d/l command. I tried trashing prefs, I tried every setting I could think of- no go, until someone happened to ask if I'd ever installed Speed Download at any point and happened to trash it manually instead of running the Uninstaller. That rang a bell, so I went to my ~user/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder, and, sure enough, there was the nasty little bugger that had been causing me so much grief- a long-forgotten copy of SpeedDownload Browser Plug-in that was intercepting my download requests and directing them... nowhere. I had completely forgotten about trying that program, and it neverclicked as a cause and effect for some reason. Anyhow, if you've ever installed that app (or something similar), you may want to check the above-named folder, as well as the /Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder to make sure nothing intercepting your d/l requests.

fix for opening pdf file in safari
Try the following link:

The Fix from Apple Care Help
:D OK Here it is folks. I had the same problem with Safari only opening one page of a PDF and it took an hour on the phone with Apple Support but it now works. Apparently for no good reason ".plist" files become corrupt in the system preferences.
Here is how to fix: 1. Quit Safari 2. Open your hard drive. 3. Click your User Profile Icon 4. Click Library 5. Click Preferences 6. Look for files named "com.apple.Safari.plist" (and/or) "com.apple.Safari.plist.saved" 7. Drag one or both files on to your desk top 8. Relaunch Safari and test a PDF doc 9. If it now works (my Safari did) trash the com.apple.Safari.plist and/or com.apple.Safari.plist.saved files and empty the trash. Don't worry about trashing the file you computer will create new ones as soon as you relaunch Safari again. You may have to go back and change a few of your preferences...but you will be able to view the entire PDF doc in your Safari again... Good luck! Cheers, :D RRR |
Many Thanks RRR!
:D
I was having major problems with PDF files and Safari. Your method of trashing the "com.apple.Safari.plist" file worked perfectly! I do legal research, and it was driving me NUTZ, since most files are in pdf format. Many, many thanks ! Keuka77 |

Had the same problem after new Acrobat reader/Acrobat Professional installed, found this link on Adobe's site: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/333/333545.html quickest fix for me.
|
Wrong link, sorry, instructions to quickly resolving this problem is to open Adobe Reader/Acrobat which ever is set as a default to opening your PDFs. Go to Internet and deselect the "Display PDF in browser using: Adobe Reader/Acrobat" and Safari will again start using it's native PDF viewer within the browser.

Safari Won't Open PDFs . . . Thanks!

For anyone else trying to fix this, I found "Internet" in the preferences menu of Adobe Reader. |
Safari only opens the first page of a PDF doc :P
I have spent HOURS today trying to get Safari to download more than the first page of a PDF. Aughghgh!
I am running OSX 10.6.2 on MBP. Safari 4.0.3. I have tried all of these options: right-clicking on the link, replacing the com.apple.Safari.plist, opening in a new window, saving as to the hard drive, etc. to no avail. It works just fine on my iMac at work, but I am not at work… I would prefer NOT to use Acrobat Reader if I can help it, because I understand it is incredibly slow. Does ANYONE know how to get Safari to download a multipage PDF? I don't care if it opens in Preview automatically or if I have to open it later, I just need to get the darn file! First thing to try is to see if the problem persists in a brand new user account. If everything works properly, then you know that the problem is caused by something in your user preferences, or other user file. If the problem still continues in the new account, then there is something system-wide affecting Safari. You say you've tried right-clicking on the link. You mean to download the file to your downloads folder? And can you view that file in Preview? It is very weird that just downloading a file should only download the first page. Does the filesize of the saved PDF file match expectations? A 1-page PDF would be quite small, under 200Kb. Could it be that only the first page is being displayed, and there seems to be no way to scroll down to the rest of the pages? |
This does sound more like a display problem than a download problem (a digital file is a complete unit--you can't just download one page!). So I would suggest looking away from Safari and at Preview itself. Perhaps delete some Preview plists and see what happens.
