10.9.5 makes scanner disappear?
Or so it seems. The scanner is no longer on the list of printers/scanners, and the application, itself, is also gone. A reset of the list does not help. Attempts at reinstalling the driver "succeed", but the scanner does not appear on the list, and there is no application to begin the scan-to-computer process. Any suggestions?
Many thanks. |
My scanner works fine.
1. What is the scanner? 2. Does it require non-Apple drivers? 3. How is it connected? 4. Is the scanner listed in System Profile? 5. What application is missing? 6. Does Image Capture work? |
Thanks for the reply.
CanoScan 8800F, via USB. I've downloaded Canon's drivers in the past, and they installed just fine. Prior to 10.9.5, everything was hunky-dory. The application is MPExplorer or something to that effect; I can't remember now that it's gone away. Even though I reinstalled the Canon driver "successfully", the scanner does not show up in the System Profile. Image Capture works every time I connect my camera or iPhone. |
The others were asking if you tried Apple's Preview App and then Acquire menu which will talk to most scanners the drivers are loaded for.
The MP software and drivers if not in your Applications folder can be re-downloaded and re-installed from Canon's site... http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/suppor...ersAndSoftware Last update to Canon software was around 10 months ago. It is possible that 10.9.5 caused in issue and that an update will be required. This has happened before. It is always wise to wait a bit before installing updates if anything non-apple is crucial to your as it gives the public time to complain and companies time to update drives as needed. Usually good to wait at least a couple of weeks. What can always downgrade if needed. Good Luck |
Sorry, anthlover, but I'm not sure which others you refer to.
The re-downloading and re-installing doesn't work, as mentioned. However, as you say, perhaps Canon will issue an update. In the meantime, my scanning is mostly done, so it's no longer a big deal, but I'd like it to work when I do need it... Meantime, my girlfriend's laptop has 10.9.4 on it, and the software seems to succeed but not work there, too. |
In the Applications folder is Apple's Preview program. If you launch that and go its File menu and the drivers are loaded you should see your scanner there and be able to scan from there.
You said you re-loaded the drivers but you can also download and re-install the MP Application from the same page. Barring that you either have to wait. Or you can download the 10.9.4 Combo updater and downgrade yourself. Lastly if you went to a machine with 10.9.4 and it does not work their either perhaps though weird timing wise something in wrong with scanner or cable. |
By "Does Image Capture work", I meant "can you use Apple's Image Capture app to control the scanner?"
However, if the scanner doesn't show up in the USB section of System Profile (assuming that's how it's connected), then that suggests a defective USB port (at either end) or cable. If the scanner also doesn't work on your girlfriend's Mac running 10.9.4, then that would point to a hardware failure on the scanner. |
Thanks for the input.
My concern was that 10.9.5 had broken something for peripherals, but there's no huge outcry, so it must be just on my end. Will check cables and such. Thanks. |
I don't know what the cause is, but for some reason, upgrading an OS seems to bring about no end of hardware failures, though no fault of the code itself.
|
Cables can be bad or flaky.
|
That'll be my next attempt to resolve this, but gotta come up with a cable first...
|
Okay, cable swap doesn't help.
And it occurs to me that, after the update to 10.9.5, the Dock icon for the scanning application had been replaced by a question mark, and, more significantly, the program itself had disappeared. So it wouldn't be a cable issue anyway, would it? I still suspect an update break of the scanning software, but I am strictly a rookie. |
The scanning application not working is one thing.
The detection of your scanner by the OS is another. If the OS is not listing the scanner as a device on the USB bus in System Profile, then that would suggest faulty scanner hardware of some sort. If you can't "create" the scanner in System Preferences, then that might also suggest a hardware problem with the scanner. However, the correct driver software may be needed to add the scanner. Your scanner is not listed in the Apple supported list of scanners: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669 so you will need external driver support. If you have downloaded the latest drivers and installed them, and the scanner still doesn't appear, then that doesn't sound good. I'm not convinced that the update is likely to have affected supported peripheral devices, particularly ones that were working under 10.9.4. The update DOES affect the code-signing on some apps, which may affect your scanner app. However, if the app has indeed disappeared, and you can't reinstall it, you could try restoring it from your backup. If you have tested the scanner on a 10.9.4 system (your girlfriend's), and it still doesn't work, then you know it's not the update. |
Thanks again for the informative reply.
I never used this scanner on girlfriend's laptop, so I don't know enough, but I can tell you that the scanner is not detected right now. Like with my laptop, I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Canon, and no luck. Maybe the scanner just suddenly up and died. |
Death is possible, bad cable is possible, Drivers and Applications are possible. It is unlikely that the scanner is not working on two different computers.
You keep saying you loaded the Canon drivers and I have asked several times if you also re-installed the Canon applications. I linked you to both the current drivers and Canon Application for your scanner. You would not be getting question mark Icons if you re-loaded the Canon Applications. Also Silly question but you did not touch the switch on the bottom of the scanner to lock it did you? And perhaps unlike the smaller canon units that do not require Power this one dies... Perhaps power cable is loose or Power brick is an issue? Check the power. Does it respond to power button and or hitting the scan or copy buttons? Wish you luck. |
Applications were also reinstalled. That's what disappeared after 10.5.9 update, and never came back even with reinstallation.
I was not aware of such a switch on the bottom, but will check to be sure. Otherwise, the scanner does power up as normally. |
I understand that the shortcuts can disappear but are you saying you went to the Applications Folder and you can not find them after reinstalling them? There usually in a Canon Folder of some sort? Canon Utility most frequently.
By they way I have two Canon Scanner, a Lidoscan 110 and MF3010 laser/Scanner. So far I have tested the 110 for you under 10.9.5 and I can scan fine. While their drivers are not identical they are from the same time frame as yours and they work. Have you tried on your Mac Pro as well as your Macbook Pro? |
You made the right suggestion here, anthlover.
I DO have the applications within the Applications folder. In the past, they had been in a different location. Why, I'm not sure. But this works for me, so end of problem. Thanks for your help. |
Great. I am glad the Applications are not found and are working for you again.
|
LOL Now found and working:)
|
Sure thing!
