Good FTP client?

I've using Cyberduck for years, but several versions have had lots of bugs which render it unusable.

Can anyone recommend a good FTP client, preferably with the ability to edit files on the site?

anthlover 08-31-2013 05:49 PM

Posted list by ranking... I used to Cyberduck. Most are at least free to try to see if it better meets your needs. There are 5 that have a higher rating then cyberduck.

For text files, you can just use TextWrangler (the free sibling of BBEdit) - it provides the ability to save and open and edit text files on FTP (or better SFTP) sites transparently.

Cyberduck. Handles almost any protocol and works with TextWrangler to edit files in place (open file on server, edit, save -> silently uploaded). I do this almost daily.

I use Yummy FTP - as a novice I found it very easy to set up and use - and the support (via twitter) is excellent..

As I said, I've been using Cyberduck for many years, but many times it doesn't refresh properly, failing to show new folders, or failing to remove deleted ones.

When I've asked about it, (several times on several different builds), they point me to the latest pre-release build, which seems to work, but then an update always breaks something.

But you don't need Cyberduck to do this - TextWrangler does this all on its own.

The refresh issue tends to happen in list view when several folders are expanded. I've never worried about it, clicking the refresh button cleans things up.

Yes, TextWrangler will edit files via FTP all by itself, but it won't do other functions. So as I need both anyway.....

I use filezilla.

If Secure FTP is available at the site server you work with so that you're not limited to plain FTP, I recommend taking a look at the all-but-unknown Fugu, an open source GUI frontend for SFTP, SCP and SSH.

Fugu (it's a kind of Japanese puffer fish, all right? I know it's a horrible name) provides the remote file editor support you want, along with drag-and-drop file transfer, image previews, permissions/owner/group mods, Keychain support and.. um.. other stuff.

Two notable drawbacks: A.) It was last updated in 2011 and doesn't work in OS 10.8, and B.) While you can upload a directory as a single entity in SFTP, you can't download one--it's unaccountably not a supported action--but you can batch all the directory's files into the download queue via drag-and-drop. (Or with Fugu's console: sftp> mget ./*

The c|net download site mentioned earlier by Anthlover shows Fugu receiving a user rating of four-and-a-half stars out of a possible five. I'd say that's about right.

Correct. Luxury sushi despite being rather poisonous. "rather" => if the chef is off by a couple of millimeters, you won't leave the restaurant alive. Farm-raised fugu are apparently non-toxic. You go first.

Wifey said a while ago: "Look! (at TV) Discount fugu restaurant! Let's go!"
No, lets not.

anthlover 09-03-2013 06:42 AM

Hopefully the "Luxury sushi" is somewhat less risky:)

Hopefully. Shops and chefs are licensed, and the test is actually practical (esp. for Japan).
"Here's a fish, a knife, and 2 bowls. Put the edible parts in one bowl, the poisonous parts in another. You have 20 minutes."
Never found out if applicants have to eat the contents of the first bowl or not.

Refresh hasn't worked for me.

Anyway, I've gone back to good old Fetch.

WebDrive for Mac is a good option. It allows you to edit server files the same way that you would edit local files. You can also use it to connect to Google Drive and Amazon S3 and it works with other protocols like SFTP.

sojourner 09-03-2013 03:23 PM

My real recommendation is Transmit. I haven't used it in a few years, so I'd suggest you give it a test drive before purchasing, just in case it isn't what it used to be. I don't use it now because I don't use FTP a lot.

I also don't use it because I received YummyFTP as part of a bundle, and Yummy's been adequate for my needs.

NovaScotian 09-03-2013 07:48 PM

The latest version of Transmit is 4.4. I've been using it without any glitches since version 1. It's a Panic app (they write good stuff), very fast, very convenient UI, but...... $34

sojourner 09-05-2013 01:24 PM

Yeah, Transmit is not cheap, but boy, is it solid.

morespace54 09-05-2013 04:47 PM

Transmit, indeed... +1

But if you look for a less expensive (but maybe a bit, overkill) solution, I invite you to try Forklift from BinaryNights (iTunes store link for $19.99).

I was lucky enough to get a copy when it was something like $1.99 and boy, I am a happy camper! I use it so much, I would buy it again, even at $19.99.

I said "a bit overkill" because you could practically use Forklift as a Finder replacement for files management...

(I'm not affiliated with BinaryNights, just a happy customer. Of course, I always loved Panic - and always will ;))

I use NetFinder.

LOL. You know, it's a little scary that NetFinder hasn't been updated since 2008 (according to MacUpdate), but the screenshot of the file browsing interface looks identical to the Finder. It looks like it is dead simple to navigate. I'm thinking it might be a really good FTP app for newbie/basic-level users.

sojourner 09-08-2013 08:08 PM

I used Cyberduck for awhile too, and it was iffy.
