Mail not showing attachments, webmail does

I got several emails today from a contractor, each with an attachment.

In Mail.app, I see no attachment, but when it occurred to me to check webmail, there they are were: an attachment with each of his attempts!

This same sender has successfully sent emails with attachments where I see the attachments in OS X Mail...and sometimes not.

Clearly the files are getting through, just not to Mail.

Any clues what up and how to fix?

thank you!

Not sure what new madness is going on with Mail, but I've been experiencing the same bugginess with Mail and would love to know how to fix. (Including recommendations for other email applications.)

At the risk of asking a silly question did you trying toggling the Attachment columns on/off/ON AGAIN to see if they appear?

sojourner 07-21-2013 11:08 AM

... I don't have an Attachments column. Looking through the menus ... How do you get an Attachments column?

anthlover 07-21-2013 11:27 AM

Are you using Classic View or New View that came with newer version of OSX like ML. In fact which version of OSX are you using?

IN classic just View, Columns, Highlight Attachments so its checked. You can also Command Click anywhere in Column headings and check of Attachments. In the more modern view I believe attachments are always showing after the senders name.

If the issue is not the View menu you can rebuild the mailbox or delete and re-add the account... Who is your mail provider ?

Look at the "raw source" of the mail messages using the "Raw Source" menu item from the "Message" sub-menu of the "View" menu in Mail.app
Compare to other mail messages where the attachment shows up properly.

sojourner 07-25-2013 05:35 AM

Using 10.7. I don't see where it's possible to change the view to classic.

I did check the raw source of several messages. So far, every message with invisible attachments has
Code:

Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v1283)
The messages with visible attachments show
Code:

Mime-Version: 1.0
Mail. It just sucks.

anthlover 07-25-2013 06:32 AM

Classic is under View in Preferences.

For me, when I tried this on the email that made me post this thread, making the attachments column visible/not visible did not change whether I could "Save" from the little pull down menu in the email.

the only "attachement" shown is the guy's logo, and not the spreadsheet/PDF attachment he meant me to receive.

that PDF is visible and downloadable from the exact same email when I view in webmail for that account.

Now I see that mail rules are not working so well suddenly...like the other poster, I may need to simply move to another email app..perhaps time to fire up Thunderbird again, or perhaps Gyaz Mail.

if Mail.app would simply behave and handle the basics, I'd be good...but that's just it: handling the basics...Mail.app is some weak sauce..

anthlover 07-25-2013 06:56 PM

Did you try deleting the Mail Account and re-adding it?

acme 07-25-2013 07:05 PM

simple as that, delete, then re-add and my rules will be untouched? weeks to get those all set up.

anthlover 07-25-2013 07:14 PM

Not sure about the rules persisting. You mentioned dropping the mail client so this would be an alternative. Think they can be backed up from Library\Mail.

** Do a quick test. Create a new user with Admin writes. Add the account there and see if your attachments show up. Also can then test rules persisting when removed and added.

acme 07-25-2013 07:55 PM

Good idea..

and good point about flipping to another app versus the rules, but I've horsed around with mail.app so much in recent years that if I have to re-do my mail one more time, I'll be out the door.

anthlover 07-25-2013 08:40 PM

I like mail for its search engine, especially multi-level search like from X and subject Y. Very Powerful. OF Course to test the rule persistence you will need to make one rule or try copy the rules from Library Mail from the other user.

Good Luck

sojourner 08-01-2013 08:48 AM

You know, I like Mail, but the bugginess is too much. At this point, it seems like creating an email application would be less work than trying to get Mail to just work.

acme 08-02-2013 11:12 AM

ha...yes, it does seem that way. Mail was weak in the earlier versions of OS X, and I guess that's understandable to an extent, but...it's 12 years later and things like Rules which don't function are simply ridiculous.

I think I'm going to give Thunderbird another twirl....I'll miss some of Mail's functions, but I can't afford the basics not working, whatever the reason for that is.

Then there's GyazMail...my original license is still valid and as I recall the rules feature was robust.

sojourner 08-04-2013 01:45 PM

I skipped Thunderbird because it's no longer being developed. I was leery about starting with it and possibly being unable to run it with the next OS.

I saw GyazMail, but it's antiquated interface scared me. I didn't realize there had been an update as of January 2013. ...It's antiquated interface still gives me pause.

I made the mistake of trying Outlook. It erased Keychain entries. Mail only erases Keychain passwords. Outlook actually deleted Keychain items outright. [Insert cursing that would make sailors blush.]

Postbox wasn't horrible, but interaction with the interface felt convoluted. As if Java programmers had decided to program for the Mac: trying to create a positive user experience, but fighting old, bad habits.

I would have gone with a Terminal email client if I understood how to set one up.

I'm tired of searching for what I think should already be out there, and I'm tired of deleting and re-adding Mail accounts to make Mail act right for another 2-3 weeks and I'm tired of Apple ignoring the problems for at least 8 years now.

Since when is Thunderbird no longer being developed?

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

sojourner 08-04-2013 03:36 PM

From the MacUpdate page: "As of July 2012, Thunderbird is no longer being actively developed, although security improvements will continue to be released as needed."

MacUpdate weren't the only ones reporting this, either. From Wikipedia: "On July 6, 2012, Mozilla announced the company was dropping the priority of Thunderbird development because the continuous effort to extend Thunderbird's feature set was mostly fruitless. The new development model is based on Mozilla offering only "Extended Support Releases", which deliver security and maintenance updates, while allowing community to take over the development of new features."

DeltaMac 08-04-2013 03:38 PM

Yes, that's a bit of misinformation, I think, and Mozilla actually announced about a year ago that they were pulling back from the high level of development, and moving to a less intense development schedule, and for the time being, focusing more on security and stability updates (which are still happening) with a minor update released just a week or two back. Not exactly "no longer being developed", just a slower pace, but easy to misinterpret.
Good info if you search a little: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewto...f=39&t=2620049

acme 08-04-2013 04:32 PM

Thanks for that info, DeltaMac...

feel a little better having T-bird to rely on as a fall back.

what about gyaz do you feel is antiquated, sojourner?

sojourner 08-11-2013 12:53 PM

They're still using the older Mac interfact (at least from what I see in the screenshots). Aqua, if memory serves. It's been awhile since I downloaded every single email client I could find, looking for a replacement for Mail. I don't remember what else about Gyaz had me return to buggy Mail.

bulcam 08-23-2013 05:41 AM

This problem may be due to anti-spam you have configured in your inbox. check that you have allowed or else create a rule for authorization. I tube problems with my companies, where most of the emails had to consult them from webmail hata that I realized the problem I mentioned.
